Garniture of Arms by Gio Botti
Lot # 173 (Sale Order: 172 of 698)
A very fine flintlock garniture by Giovanni Botti, circa 1730, consisting of a pair of holster pistols and a fowling piece mounted in superbly gilt bronze mounts cast and chased in relief in the Brescian manner. The pistols and fowler each with two stage barrels with the stamped signature of Italy’s most renowned barrel maker, Lazarino Cominazzo, on the fluted breech. The rounded locks with tails, cocks, and frizzens are all signed Gio. (Giovanni) Botti and chiseled in relief in the Italian manner. The moulded figured walnut full stocks are carved with scrolls near the ramrod pipes. The pistols with spurred pommels, fire blued screws and triggers, gilt bronze fore-end caps, single gilt bronze ramrod pipes, and original wooden ramrods with gilt bronze tips. The fowling piece en suite with cast and chased gilt bronze buttplate. Both the pistols and fowling piece are preserved in pristine condition throughout and retain nearly all of their original bright, blued and gilt finishes.
This garniture is from a large order placed in the second quarter of the 18th century by Ernst August Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar for Schloss Ettersburg in Saxony and remained in the ducal Gewehrkammer until early in the 20th century. Similar pairs of pistols were in the W. Keith Neal Collection and the George F. Harding Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. Current scholarship contends these were created by Ernst August’s court gunmaker Johan Martin Laun from parts supplied by Giovanni Botti of Brescia. This garniture represents a unique opportunity to acquire a magnificent pair of high art flintlock pistols together with a matching fowling piece in essentially the same mint condition as they were in 1730, nearly 300 years ago.
Condition: Museum quality. Outstanding garniture in the best condition and well preserved.
