Ernest Berke The Hair Ornament Pencil Study

Lot # 841 (Sale Order: 841 of 1523)

Title is The Hair Ornament. 16 1/2" by 19 1/4" framed. Pencil on Paper. Ernest Berke (1921 - 2010) was active/lived in Arizona. Ernest Berke is known for Western genre-In...moredian, sculpture. A sculptor and painter of western subjects and well known both in the Southwest and East Coast, Ernest Berke was born in Harlem, New York City in 1921 to a Romanian mother who designed clothes and a Russian father, who was a sheet metal worker. At six years of age, his father, who recognized his talent, encouraged him to pursue art. While working as an advertising illustrator for Sears & Roebuck for a number of years, Ernest became fascinated with the growing West, especially cowboys and Indians. A self-taught artist and anthropologist, Berke was a voracious reader. He met on a regular basis at a local New York City bookstore with a group who shared his interest in the West, and occasionally, Berke would also show his works there. When the New York Times reviewed his work, it was met with great interest, and he terminated his job to devote himself to his painting. His devotion to the West covers over four decades, completing more that 2500 paintings and nearly 80 sculptures, five of which are life-size. He has portrayed the North American Indian with considerable accuracy and sensitivity, having lived with the Northern Shoshone Indian tribe in Blackfoot, Idaho. He is the only Western artist to have been accepted to appear in the Kennedy Galleries in New York, and has been featured in the American Artist, Sotheby's, and Southwest Art. He has had studios in Long Island and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has written and illustrated two books on the American frontier and on Indians, both commissioned by Doubleday. Berke spent his summers in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he erected a 12-foot by 18-foot bronze sculpture titled The Buffalo Hunt. His winters were usually spent in New York City.

Charles Schreyvogel Chief Black Horn Painting

Lot # 848 (Sale Order: 848 of 1523)

Title is Chief Black Horn Sioux. 8" by 11" unframed, 10 1/2" by 13 1/2" framed. Oil on Board. Charles painted less than 100 total oil's in his career, making this offerin...moreg extremely rare. Chief Joseph Black Horn, a minor band chief of the Oglala Sioux, fought under Crazy Horse at the Battle of Little Big Horn at age 15. In the action against Custer’s command he captured two cavalry horses. In 1890, when he attempted to visit relative at Wounded Knee, he was fired upon by white troops and driven from friendship with whites to siding with the Ghost Dancers. He narrowly missed death at the Massacre of Wounded Knee, which he witnessed from a distant hill. Provenance: Sold in Sotheby's New York, 03/14/2001, Lot 152, Turner Branch Law Firm Estate. Charles (Carl) Schreyvogel (1861 - 1912) was active/lived in New Jersey, New York. Charles Schreyvogel is known for Indian, cowboy and military genre painting, miniatures. One of the better known painters of Western subject matter, Charles Schreyvogel was especially interested in military life in the days of the disappearing frontier. His western scenes were usually subjects with landscape as the backdrop, and his depictions of Indians were that of people with dignity and pride. "His favorite theme was warfare between intruding whites and Indians defending their ancestral homelands." (Baigell, 321) He spent most of his life as an impoverished artist and then earned what seemed like overnight fame. "When Remington died in 1909, Schreyvogel wore the mantle of premier Western artist for the brief remainder of his life." (Zellman, 557) Schreyvogel was born in New York City and grew up in a poor family of German immigrant shopkeepers on the Lower East Side and also spent much of his childhood in Hoboken, New Jersey. He found work in art-related trades including as a Meerschaum pipe carver, goldsmith, and lithographer. He taught himself to draw, but he studied with H. August Schwabe at the Newark Art League. By 1880, he was teaching drawing and painting and used the roof of his apartment in Hoboken as his studio. In 1887, with the help of several patrons, especially Dr. William Redwood Fisher, he went to Munich, Germany for three years and studied with Carl Von Marr and Frank Kirchbach. Dr. Fisher encouraged the artist to take an interest in western subject matter. Returning to the United States, he had bad health and was advised to go West to regain strength, but he didn't have the money for several years so he satisfied his aroused interest by sketching cowboys and Indians he saw in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. In 1893, Schreyvogel first went West, visiting Arizona and the Ute Reservation in southwest Colorado. He quickly regained his health and excelled as a horseman. He also learned sign language to communicate with the Indians to persuade them to pose for him. But the resulting paintings didn't sell in the East, so he, having married Louise Walther, earned money with portrait painting of miniatures on ivory while continuing to do western painting. In the 1890s and 1900s, he made additional trips West, including the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. In 1901, his work, My Bunkie, won the first place honor, the Thomas B. Clarke Prize, at the National Academy of Design, and a market for his western paintings and sculpture was set. My Bunkie was a rejected painting that even his local cafe owner had refused to hang, and despairing, he had left it at the Academy. He was so sure he would get no recognition that he had not even bothered to leave his address. He worked from studios in Hoboken, New Jersey, and from a farm in West Kill, New York, and his Academy success was followed by winning a bronze medal in Paris and another at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. The money he earned from this recognition allowed him to do more traveling in the West where he gathered material for his studio painting, many of them military scenes. Most of his canvases were large, but he was such a meticulous painter that he only completed about seventy-five western paintings. He also did some watercolors, and many of his paintings were reproduced during his lifetime. He died in Hoboken from blood poisoning from a chicken bone lodged in his gum. His studio and collection are on permanent display at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

Clare Walker Fine Art Gallery Howa...morerd Norton Cook (1901 - 1980) was active/lived in New Mexico, California. Howard Cook is known for Easel and mural painting, graphics. Considered one of America's best-known print makers including a series of woodcuts of the Grand Canyon in 1927, Howard Cook was also a painter, illustrator and lecturer who served frequently as guest professor in numerous universities and art schools. In the 1930s, he twice earned Guggenheim Fellowships, spending one year and a half painting in Taxco, Mexico, and also time in the Deep South where he painted and did prints of genre scenes of black people. Rainier to the sparkle of a meandering meadow stream. This inspires me to attempt to capture the essence of a particular setting or a moment in time, and share that with others through my paintings. I like to use the effects of early morning or late afternoon lighting to bring out the more dramatic saturated colors and transform a seemingly ordinary setting. The challenge for me is to capture the patterns and contrasts between the warm light and cool shadows. I often try to isolate and focus in on scenes that others might normally overlook and give viewers a little different perspective. As long as I can remember I have wanted to be an artist. This has encompassed several different areas design, decorating, gardening, painting. My earlier landscapes were executed in a tight, almost photo-realistic manner. The turning point began after seeing the work of the French Impressionists in Paris. I was attracted by the brighter colors, freshness and spontaneity of their paintings. In recent years I have been drawn to the Russian and Early California Impressionists. While my work is still representational, I have loosened and softened my approach. By not defining every leaf or blade of grass, viewers have more opportunity to interact and use their imagination, making them a part of the creative process. David was born in northern California. He studied at Art Center College of Design, Biola University and the Scottsdale Artist´s School. Recently he has taken workshops with the Plein-Air Painters of America and Scott Christensen. David has spent the past 24 years in the Pacific Northwest. He and his wife, Jean reside in Edmonds and have five children, including two boys from Bulgaria.
