Jack Koonce Surveying the Lemhi Oil Painting

Lot # 851 (Sale Order: 851 of 1523)

Title is Surveying the Lemhi. Oil on Canvas. 24" by 30" unframed. 31" by 37" framed. Jack Koonce (20th century) was active/lived in Idaho. Jack Koonce is known for Wildli...morefe in landscape painting. Jack Koonce was raised in the sagebrush hills and craggy mountain peaks of Central Idaho, where he spent a childhood rambling through the vast rugged wilderness that was his backyard. Fishing, hunting, hiking, backpacking, skiing and sketching all combined to forge a deep and elemental bond with nature, and his canvases are evidence of that profound connection. Koonce recalls of his initial trip to the high alpine backcountry: "The first time I made it to high altitude in summer,I was hooked. Stunted trees and deep, green, grass against snow-white granite. Flowers everywhere..It was a masterwork." Cold, snowy winters worked their magic too. For back in the day, when the snows fell, Idaho mountain kids took to the slopes and skied. Long winters spent in the practice of ski racing - a difficult and somewhat obscure discipline - did much to forge Koonce's character, and painting style. In his work, he clearly draws upon the fearlessness, self-reliance, perseverance and, maybe especially, sheer awe, which the mountains demand of those who travel there. They're excellent teachers. "Skiing is about the mastery of craft as a way to discover beauty… and avoid disaster. That same mastery is required to find truth in the expression of painting," says Koonce. A lifetime of exploring the natural world also taught him to trust his instincts, he says, giving him "the courage to launch myself in a direction with utter abandon. It is this confidence in the unknown that I find myself turning to, in my work, time and time again." Living today on the Eastern edge of Idaho's Smoky Mountains, Koonce still finds spiritual and artistic inspiration in his rugged backyard. "Sometimes now I see wildlife, and I'll paint them where and how they stand, but more appealing to my sensibilities is to compile, from years of observation, the scene, the gestures, the mood..bringing them together into an imaginative whole. This, I think, makes my approach different from many wildlife artists who use photographs in a more literal manner. My approach is conceptual in its construction." It's an approach to life, and now his life's work, that has left him regretless. "It offers the endless excitement of perpetual discovery." Jack Koonce studied and taught art and biology at the highschool and college level prior to embarking upon a fulltime career as an artist. He is currently a signature member of the "Society of Animal Artists", New York, the "Worlwide Nature Artists Group and the "Oil Painters of America", Chicago. He has received several awards and is currently on a national museum tour representing the Society of Animal Artists.

Warren Eliphalet Rollins Taos Pueblo Drawing

Lot # 853 (Sale Order: 853 of 1523)

Title is Taos Peublo. Mixed Media on Paper (Crayo-Tone). 10 1/2" by 15 1/2". Provenance: Private Collection Santa Fe New Mexico, John Fillmore Gallery Santa Fe New Mexico...more. Warren Eliphalet Rollins (1861 - 1962) was active/lived in New Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada. Warren Rollins is known for Desert landscape and Indian portrait and genre painting. For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century. Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. While in Montana, Rollins painted a portrait of Calamity Jane. The sitting took place in a saloon, and while Rollins drew, Calamity drank, wept and poured out the story of her life to him. The portrait was lost in a fire at The Billings Club. In the early 1900s, Rollins spent a year in Arizona painting the Hopi, Navajo and Zuni Indians; these studies became very popular. His constant search for new subject matter took him to Taos, where he had a studio near his friend Irving Couse; to Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico, sketching and painting its ancient ruins; and to the Grand Canyon where he had a studio near El Tovar. His dramatic Canyon painting was purchased by the Santa Fe Railroad. Rollins was the first president of the Santa Fe Art Club, and active in the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, which has an extensive collection of his work, including "Grief," one of his most famous paintings. He did murals for the Museum, the post office and Harvey House in Gallup, and triptychs depicting Zuni life for Bishop's Lodge, Santa Fe. His Mayflower Series, done in Crayo-tone, a medium he developed and used almost exclusively in later years, was widely exhibited on the East Coast. Warren E. Rollins continued painting well into his nineties and died at the age of one hundred years and five months in Winslow, Arizona.

Olaf Carl Seltzer Glacier Park Montana Painting

Lot # 855 (Sale Order: 855 of 1523)

Title is Glacier Park Mountain Goat. Watercolor on Paper. In original frame with original backing. 8 14/2" by 12 7/8" framed. Olaf Carl Seltzer (1877 - 1957) was active/l...moreived in Montana / Denmark. Olaf Seltzer is known for Frontier and Indian genre paitning, illustration. If there ever was an artist who inspired a fellow artist, it was Charles M. Russell who had a profound influence on Olaf Carl Seltzer (1877-1957). The cowboy artist helped bring out the best in his younger, Great Falls, Montana friend. While Russell was gregarious and enjoyed a crowd, Seltzer was quiet and somewhat withdrawn. They both saw the same truth, their love for Montana and the "West That Has Passed." Born on August 25, 1877 in Copenhagen, Denmark to German immigrant parents, Olaf was abandoned in infancy by his father. He found solace in drawing, which led to acceptance at the Tekniske Selskabe Institute, known to develop artisans. Yet the young artist dreamed of the American West of Buffalo Bill Cody. He and his mother Julie sailed to America on June 21, 1892 to join his sister Laura and her husband in Giant Springs, a short jaunt from Great Falls, Montana. His first job was a ranch hand for a local outfit, but soon he realized the wages were better working for the Great Northern Railway. In October 1893 he was employed as an apprentice machinist for the railway in Great Falls. A steady income allowed him to marry Mabel L. Cleland, and they eventually had two sons, Carl and Walter. Other jobs such as locomotive repairman found him riding trains throughout the northern Great Plains, sketching in his spare time. His big break came from Russell patron Dr. Phillip Cole who by 1925 was one of the most important collectors of Western American art in the country. Cole was born in 1883 in Illinois but raised in Montana. Cole had met Seltzer on one of his trips to Montana, and for a year starting in 1926 Seltzer moved to New York to work on art commissions for him. Many more would follow. In 1928 he purchased a home on East Central Avenue and completed for Cole a series of watercolors that would be called the "Western Characters. In 1933 Cole had yet another project for Olaf. He was to paint the history of Montana in a series of oils, measuring no greater than six inches. He and Cole worked together on the commentary for each piece. The last of the oils was delivered to Cole in the autumn of 1935. The next year Cole photocopied the miniatures and assembled them into an impressive suede-covered volume he titled Montana in Miniature. At least four copies were produced. But Cole wouldn’t enjoy his collection long. On June 29, 1941 he died of a stroke at age fifty-seven. Several years later, Oklahoma oilman Thomas Gilcrease purchased for $400,000 much of Cole’s collection that included 560 paintings, sixty-two bronzes, and historical material. Half of the paintings were executed by Seltzer. They eventually found a home in 1949 when the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Seltzer died in a Great Falls convalescent home on December 16, 1957. He once said, "If there is anything of lasting value in my art, it will survive. If not, it will perish. He would be happy to know that him and his art—2,500 oil and watercolor paintings—were not forgotten. In 1960 the Montana Historical Society had a major retrospective of Seltzer’s paintings. Six years later art dealer Dr. Van Kirke Nelson in Kalispell, Montana and Cato K. Butler from Helena published Montana in Miniature, after finding one of Cole’s copies by the same name. In June 1979 the Gilcrease Museum had the largest one-man exhibit of Seltzer’s to date. Many exhibitions followed, including one at the C.M. Russell Museum in 2019. Besides his art, Olaf would be proud of his grandson, Steve Seltzer, who lives in Great Falls and is a noted and prolific artist.

Franklin Watkins Nude Oil on Canvas Painting

Lot # 856 (Sale Order: 856 of 1523)

Title is Seated Female Nude. 16" by 19 1/2". Oil on Canvas. Provenance: Freeman's, 12/12/1999, Lot 136. Condition: Crack in paint just above the subject's foot. Franklin ...moreChenault "Watty" Watkins (1894 - 1972) was active/lived in Pennsylvania. Franklin Watkins is known for Portrait, figure, genre and still life painting, commercial art. Born in New York City, Franklin Watkins, whose nickname was "Watty," was known for a painting style of "dramatic realism", which emerged in the mid 1920s and was "characterized by surging diagonals, expressionistic distortions and despite a brushy facture, insistent wiry outlines." (Baigell, 369) He spent his boyhood in Philadelphia and took his art training at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1913 to 1918. However, his studies were interrupted due to financial difficulties and World War I in which he enlisted in the Navy with his life-long friend, Arthur B Carles. Watkins had "service as a civilian wartime ship camouflage* artist for the U.S. Shipping Board in Philadelphia." (Behrens) He then spent five years as a commercial artist and in 1923, traveled to Europe on a Cresson Scholarship and spent time in France, Spain, and Italy. His study of the Old Masters much influenced his future career. After teaching at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Art, he had a long career, from 1943 to his death in 1972, as a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. He earned many awards including the Bronze Medal at the Paris International Exposition in 1937 and the Bronze Medal at the Musee Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1938. However, the turning point in his career was in 1931 when he won the Carnegie International* Exhibition First Award for Suicide in Costume, a dead clown with smoking pistol in hand. This work was the subject of much controversy as well as positive admiration. Watkins' painting included symbolic still life, figure and occasional portraits focused on introspection. His portrait of Mayor Clark was criticized for being too brooding. New York critics disdained Watkins after a Museum of Modern Art retrospective in 1950, so he never again showed in that city.

Fremont Ellis Taos Stream Watercolor Painting

Lot # 857 (Sale Order: 857 of 1523)

Title is Pojoaque Creek. Watercolor on Paper. 9" by 11" unframed, 12 1/4" by 14 1/2" framed. Provenance: From the Estate of Uvaldo and Isabel Sandoval of Taos New Mexico....more Uvaldo was the sheriff of Taos Pueblo from 1952-1954. Fremont F. Ellis (1897 - 1985) was active/lived in New Mexico, California. Fremont Ellis is known for Landscape and Indian painting, graphics. Born in Virginia City, Montana, Fremont Ellis earned a reputation as a New Mexico painter of site-specific landscapes that conveyed his intense feelings for the rich coloration of the Southwest. He was much influenced by American Impressionism and was one of the few newcomer artists of Santa Fe who had been born in the West. His family had gone to Montana during the Gold Rush, and his father, trained as a dentist, went into theatrical work. As a youngster, Ellis played the drums in his father's movie theatre. The family traveled all over the county, and the future artist spent much time in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. He briefly attended the Art Students League, but decided to return West to the landscape he loved. He first went to El Paso, Texas, where he taught art and then in Santa Fe joined his friends Willard Nash, Jozef Bakos, Will Shuster, and Walter Mruk. Together they formed the Los Cinco Pintores, modernist-tending artists who had their first of several exhibitions in the Museum of Santa Fe in 1921. However, the group did not stay together very long, as stylistically they went in a variety of directions. Ellis, considered the "loner" of the group, married and spent a period of time in Espanola, about twenty-five miles north of Santa Fe. Later he settled about ten miles east of Santa Fe in a home that came to be regarded as one of the most beautiful of the haciendas in that area. From the time he was young, he had developed a great love of the Spanish people of New Mexico. His wife was a member of an old, aristocratic New Mexican family that owned in Santa Fe a large piece of property where the Hilton Inn subsequently was located. Ellis became saddened by what he regarded as the loss of the old ways--the quiet, gentle way of life.

Allen Tucker Taos New Mexico Oil Painting

Lot # 858 (Sale Order: 858 of 1523)

Title is Fall in Taos. 8" by 10" unframed, 10 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed. Provenance: From the Estate of Uvaldo and Isabel Sandoval of Taos New Mexico. Uvaldo was the sheriff...more of Taos Pueblo from 1952-1954. Allen Tucker (1866 - 1939) was active/lived in New York. Allen Tucker is known for Landscape, coastal, portrait, figure. Allen Tucker, was an architect and painter so influenced by Vincent Van Gogh that he was called "Vincent in America". (Gerdts 291) Robert Henri and Maurice Prendergast were also credited as having an influence on Tucker's brushwork and compositions, the latter decisively. However, as his painting evolved, he did not fit into any tidy slot for description and was known as an individualist not easily categorized in American art history. Tucker was born in Brooklyn in 1866 and graduated from the School of Mines of Columbia University with a degree in architecture and took a job as an architectural draftsman in the architectural firm of McIvaine and Tucker, his fathers business. During that time, he studied painting at the Art Students League with Impressionist John H. Twachtman, but it was not until around 1904, when he was 38, that Tucker became a full-time painter, leaving architecture behind. Many of his early canvases were classically Impressionistic with poplar trees resembling those of Van Gogh and haystacks and corn shocks emulating those of Claude Monet. However, he did not hold to his Impressionist style and explored other kinds of abstraction as well as architectural forms. He became, in 1911, a charter member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, the group that would conceive, organize, select the artists and hang the 1913 Armory Show that shocked many persons by introducing abstract art to America. Tucker helped organize the landmark Armory Show of 1913 and in 1919 was also part of the founding the Society of Independent Artists, a group that rebelled against traditionalism. In 1918, Tucker had his first large one-man show at the Whitney Studio Club (later the Whitney Museum of American Art) and became an advisor to Mrs. Juliana Force, who directed the Whitney Studio and the Whitney Studio Club. He was an Honorary Member of the Art Students' League, and taught at the League from 1921 to 1928. Tucker also wrote, "Here and There," a book of verse, 1919; "Design and Idea," 1930 and "John Henry Twachtman," 1931. His summers were spent painting in New Mexico, on the New England coast, in the Colorado and Canadian Rockies and in Europe. Allen Tucker died in New York City in 1939. His work is in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Brooklyn Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; and the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, of Salish, French-Cree and Shoshone ancestry, was born on the Flathead Indian Reservation in St. Ignatius, Montana in 1940. After further study at the Academie Julian in Paris and traveling throughout Europe for four years, she moved to Laguna Beach in 1913 and was painting in Arizona as early as 1914. The landscape of the West inspired her to adopt a light, colorful Impressionist palette. In spite of a severe spinal injury, she took adventurous painting trips into remote mountain areas. She also supervised a Sunday School for ten years, and was a six-year president of the Laguna Beach Art Association and helped raise funds to build the existing museum. Her early works of genre and interiors were much darker than her later California landscapes and marine scenes. She combined watercolor and oil and painted in a decorative style.

Nahum Gutman Hills of Tiberias Gouache Painting

Lot # 863 (Sale Order: 863 of 1523)

Title is In the Hills of Tiberias. Gouache on Paper. 12" by 16" unframed, 18" by 22" framed. Provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania Nahum Gutman (1898 - 1980) was a...morective/lived in Israel. Nahum Gutman is known for Modernist-leaning landscape, interior, genre. He was an Israeli painter, illustrator, sculptor and author, who became a pioneer of a style based on modern life in Israel and opposed to the old school of teaching. Nahum, or Nachum Gutman was born in Romania and emigrated to Israel with his parents in 1905. After serving in the Jewish Legion during World War I, he studied at the Herzlia Gymnasium in Tel Aviv and at Bezalel in Jerusalem (1912). In his paintings, he began portraying images of the Arab community, showing shepards and shepherdesses, farm girls washing in the orange groves etc., capturing the sensual atmosphere of the Middle East. Gutman participated in the Tower of David Exhibition in 1926, and later became a children's book author and illustrator, earning the Israeli Prize for Children's Literature in 1978. He also became known as the portrayer of life in early Tel Aviv, the story he told in many paintings and illustrations. After his death the Nachum Gutman Museum was established in Neve Tzedek, considered the first Jewish neighborhood in Tel Aviv.

G. Russell Case Fly Fishing Watercolor Painting

Lot # 864 (Sale Order: 864 of 1523)

Title is All Wet. Watercolor on Board. 8" by 12" unframed, 17 1/4" by 21 3/8" framed. Russell Case (Born 1966) is active/lives in Utah. Russell Case is known for Western ...morelandscape painting. Western painter G. Russell Case is inspired by nature, but he places little value on literal translations. His sweeping, idealized versions of the western landscape are compositions that combine the beauty of the natural world with the rich imagination and originality of an artist's mind. While there is an unmistakable honesty present in his painted environments -- stemming from his engagement with the land painted directly from nature -- viewers may be reminded of other great artists of the west, whose work is marked by distinctive artistic philosophies. Case's work is unfettered by philosophy and intellect, though he is surely a student of his artistic forebears. The monumental scale of Maynard Dixon, or the unfiltered color and light of Thomas Moran both find their way into his visual language. Yet Case's work is simple, pure, and fresh; his painting draws in the viewer and delivers timeless landscapes. We are immediately transported into a world created by shadow and light, of immense vistas punctuated by jagged mountains and inhabited by lonesome cowboys. Although Russell Case was undoubtedly stirred by the philosophies of the great artists and fueled by the freedom of painting from nature, this artist maintains that his most profound inspiration came from those in his own life who bolstered his career and remained faithful to his vision. Born in the small town of Brigham City, Utah, Russell Case's artistic enthusiasm was first fostered by his father, Gary Case, who was also an artist. His father encouraged Russell's artistic talents and helped him seek exposure through marketing and local galleries. For fifteen years the younger Case translated his surroundings into watercolor, creating a foundation for the liquid vibrancy found in his later oils. This transition developed during his college years, where Case studied with the intent to become a professor of art. After graduating from Utah State University in 1990 and with the support of his wife, Susanne, Case decided to dedicate himself to painting full-time. It comes as little surprise that Case's work eventually attracted the attention of collector Dr. Mike Edson and his wife Karen. Case credits Edson as being a major factor in his success due to his attentive monitoring of the young artist's progress: his vigilant observation, unwavering support, and learned guidance helped develop Case's talent and channel his artistic energy. Case has also won numerous awards including Best of Show and First Place Oil Painting, Phippen Western Art Show in Prescott, Arizona in 2001; First Place at Southwest Magazine Artist to Watch Show in Steam Boat Springs, Colorado in 2002; and Best of Show, People's Choice, and Artist's Choice, Maynard Dixon Country, Mt. Carmel Junction, Utah in 2003. Among the shows that Case has been invited to in the last few years are the Western Visions show in Jackson, WY; Coors Western Art Exhibition, Denver, CO.; and Maynard Dixon Country, Mt. Carmel. Russell Case now resides in Brigham City, Utah with his wife, Susanne and two of his children Morgan, and Cooper with the oldest Taylee away at college.

Jay Rummel Missoula Montana Woodblock Print

Lot # 873 (Sale Order: 873 of 1523)

Title is Sophisticate. 13" by 16" in matte. A Missoula artist, Rummel was known for his love of Native American and pioneer storytelling, the paintings of Charlie Russell...more, 1960's psychedelia, folk music and modern art. The Five Valleys Trilogy is one of his most significant works. Three panels are titled, from left to right: Road to the Buffalo, When First Unto this Country, and Lady from Missoula County. MAM's prints are from an edition of photolithographs derived from the original large-scale paintings that Rummel created between 1981-1983 with assistance from Doug Grimm. The paintings were commissioned originally for the Top Hat Bar and are on long-term loan to the University of Montana. The Road to the Buffalo is translated from the Nez Perce name for the Blackfoot River corridor, Cokahlah-ishkit. Local tribes used the foot trail to cross the Continental Divide into the Rocky Mountain Front. Lewis & Clark used the trail in 1806, followed by the Big Blackfoot Railroad, which in the early 1900s transported lumber to the Anaconda mill in Bonner. More recently, conservation efforts have helped the Road to the Buffalo recover from industrial pollution to host excellent fishing and biking trails. When First Unto this Country depicts the landscape and Native American culture that flourished for 10,000 years before Europeans arrived. Lady from Missoula County is the contemporary local art and music scene that Rummel knew well. The print features Missoula most well-known downtown watering holes, local musicians like the Snake River Outlaws, and a crew of Eddie's Club regulars -- including Rummel and Lee Nye, the bartender-photographer who so famously documented the bar's patrons.
