Mark Maggiori Taos Pueblo Watercolor Painting

Lot # 876 (Sale Order: 876 of 1523)

Title is Taos Pueblo Study. Watercolor on Paper. 11 1/4" by 12 1/2" unframed, 17 1/2" by 16 1/4" framed. Mark Maggiori, b. 1977. Live in Los Angeles, California Mark Magg...moreiori’s first views of America were framed within the front windshield of a car making its way from New York to San Francisco. That month-long trip, filled with majestic views of the national parks and timeless glimpses of the West, was made when Mark was only 15 years old and on vacation far from his home in France, but its impact would ripple throughout his life and set into motion his great fascination with the West. Years later, back in Paris, he would enroll at the famous Academie Jullian, where Western greats Ernest L. Blumenschein, Burt Geer Phillips and Joseph Henry Sharp had also studied before they helped form the Taos Society of Artists. After being formally trained in academic drawing, Mark’s life would take an important detour through music after he formed a successful band that led to many opportunities in Europe, including into other artistic disciplines such as animation, photography and film making—each one informing his artistic creativity in unique ways. After great success in the music industry, Mark was lured back to the United States thanks to his muse, creative equal and wife Petecia Lefawnhawk. They journeyed through the West and their trips immediately took him back to that original road trip two decades earlier, the trip that opened his eyes to the beauty of American West. It was then, at the age of 36, he made the decision to paint Western art. They staked temporary claims in out-of-the-way places such as Chloride and Kingman, Arizona, where the desert offered its stunning inspiration and where Mark quickly began to produce some of the most audacious Western paintings of a new generation—audacious because Mark was still brand new to the Western art world, and also because he was an outsider, a Frenchman, with a profoundly unique view of the American cowboy. In the space of just a few short years Mark rose through the ranks to become one of the premier Western artists working today. His work brought many new opportunities, including important solo and group shows, and a significant showing at the 2017Night of Artists at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, where he won the Sam Houston award. He also began to expand more artistically: he started to work more in plein air, he spent time on ranches with cowboys and on horseback to acquaint himself more with the Western way of life. He spent time in New Mexico, Arizona and Wyoming and began adding additional figures to his works and new kinds of compositions to his growing arsenal. Like Henry Farny, another Frenchman who made his way to the Southwest to paint its interesting inhabitants, Mark has carved a unique place for himself within Western art, a place where his work—part Frank Tenney Johnson, part Herbert "Buck" Dunton, with shades of Tom Ryan and Bill Owen—continues to provoke the minds of young and old Western collectors alike.

Sheryl Bodily Indian Camp Oil on Canvas Painting

Lot # 877 (Sale Order: 877 of 1523)

Title is Crow Camp. 11" by 14" unframed. 19" by 22" framed. Oil on Canvas. Sheryl L. Bodily (Born 1936) is active/lives in Montana, Idaho. Sheryl Bodily is known for West...moreern frontier scene painting, wildlife, horses. A western wildlife and landscape artist, Sheryl Bodily is a resident of Montana. He was the winner of the 1986 Ellensburg Washington Rodeo Association Poster Award, and recently received Best of Show/Flatwork at the Florence Festival Art Auction in Florence, Montana. Favorite subjects rendered in oil and pencil include Indian scenes with children, old cabins, wagon trains and wildlife. He is widely exhibited in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, Sedona, Arizona and Idaho. In the fall of 1970, an art auction was held through the Pacific Northwest Indian Center in Spokane, Washington. To that auction a young man named Sheryl Bodily, from Columbia Falls, Montana, brought a few of his oil paintings. A good deal of excitement was caused by the fact that Mr. Bodily's paintings were sold at auction for twice their listed value. A few months later the performance was repeated at another art auction in Great Falls, Montana, and suddenly an artist who had been painting professionally for 12 years, two of them full time, was discovered. Suddenly a man who had had to work hard to sell his work, found himself with more advance commissions than he could readily complete. Western artist Sheryl Bodily was born in Boise, Idaho, on April 20, 1936, the second oldest in a family with one brother and four sisters. Mr. Bodily's father was a farmer in the Boise Valley, and he remembers six moves to different farms in that region. He described his father as the breadwinner and his mother as the counselor and teacher in his early years. "I remember milking eight to fifteen cows which was always my chore at home, but my real interest at that time was the hobby of collecting arrowheads and other artifacts in Rocky Canyon with my younger brother near Meridian, Idaho." His enthusiastic interest in Indian people and their contemporary culture has continued to grow over the years and has had a tremendous influence on his art. Mr. Bodily first remembers drawing in the first grade of the Meridian Idaho Grade School, and being told at that time by his teacher that someday he would become an artist. The artist laughingly suggested that, "it took nearly thirty years to prove her right." Mr. Bodily began oil painting at 14, and oil has been his primary medium since that time. He has also completed a number of works in pen and ink, but at present works almost entirely in oils. "I would like to do more pen and inks, but I´m so busy now with oils that I really can't find the time." After completing high school, Mr. Bodily studied commercial art for two years at Brigham Young University in Utah. He found during those two years that commercial art held little interest for him as a lifetime pursuit and at the end of two years he accepted a call to serve a two and one half year mission for his church to the Spanish speaking peoples of Texas and New Mexico. During this period, and shortly afterward, he traveled extensively in the southwest and expanded his interest in contemporary and historical Indian culture to include those of the southwest. George Dabich Sunlight Basin Wyoming Oil Painting

Lot # 879 (Sale Order: 879 of 1523)

Title is Sunlight Basin Wyoming. 27 1/2" by 33 1/2" framed. Condition Report: Unrestored, small quarter size area of paint loss in sky, some paint crackle as shown. Would...more benefit from a cleaning. George Dabich (1922 - 2013) was active/lived in Wyoming, California. George Dabich is known for West-historical genre, sculptor. George Dabich was born in 1922 in East Los Angeles, CA. Shortly he moved to be with his father in Alberhill, CA where he grew up. George was discharged from the Navy in 1945 after having two ships blown out from under him and returned to Alberhill. Jobs were scarce in those parts in 1946, so Dabich joined a friend heading off to Wyoming. Being that his friend was a gambler, they ended up in Cook City, Montana, which was a wide-open town then, where George took a job as a wrangler. After the wrangling job fell through, Dabich headed over to Cody, Wyoming where he took a job as a guide for an outfitting company. It was Dabich's guiding career that ultimately shaped his life as an artist and family man. On a hunt one morning in 1958, he went out to retrieve a couple of picketed horses. Not wanting to walk the horses back the half mile to camp he swung up on one of the horses bareback not knowing he was a bucker. Shortly Dabich flew over the horse's head landing on the ground in front of him. As the horse continued to buck, it lost it's balance and fell on him breaking Dabich's leg. Having no place to recover he was taken in by his girlfriend whom he soon married. To combat the boredom of recovery he took up sketching and painting. "Breaking that leg was the best thing that ever happened to me," Dabich said. A local restaurateur, Junior Kousolos, discovered some of Dabich's work in the trash and sold them to Senator Alan Simpson's farther, Milward, then Wyoming's governor, for $60.00 giving the cash to Dabich. Dabich had his first sale, and the artwork remains in the Simpson family cabin 'till this day. Kousolos soon opened an art gallery next door to his restaurant representing the artwork of Dabich, Bob Meyers and a resent arrival in Cody, Nick Eggenhofer. Dabich and Eggenhofer soon became fast friends and fishing buddies - although Dabich never had formal art lessons he learned immeasurably by watching Eggenhofer work. At the time of this writing Dabich is 87 years old, still painting, sometimes sculpting and doing some of his best work. He paints what he knows and his art is wonderfully detailed and accurate - a product of his intimacy with the wilderness and ranching gained through his many years of guiding and wrangling. Dabich's animals, besides being accurately illustrated, exhibit the critter's personality and reaction to specific situations. This ability is only achieved through real life experience.
