Framed Egyptian Sphinx Oil Painting Signed by Artist Rick Griffin

Lot # 137 (Sale Order: 135 of 348)

This is “THE” Rick Griffin 1978 Original Oil Painting commissioned by Relix Magazine for the cover of their issue reporting on the Grateful Dead’s ground-breaking set of shows at the Sound and Light Theatre at the Great Pyramids in Gizeh, Egypt. Les Kippel, the founder and publisher of Relix, specifically wanted Rick to paint the cover art for that issue. Rick sent Les various work-ups, and Les being Les, had other changes and tweaks that he wanted made, including asking for more detail and recognizable facial expressions on the expedition team, which clearly shows Jerry Garcia as the central ‘archeologist’ on the dig. Eventually, Les must have been happy, as the painting made the cover. This painting is the final version used on that cover, and is the most highly detailed of Griffin’s Egypt Relix series. It has been beautifully custom-framed with museum quality materials. Dimensions: Framed 21 3/8" L x 27 3/8" H. Estimate: $35,000...more
