“Grateful Dead Records” 1973 "From the Mars Hotel" Side B Steel Record Pressing Plates

Lot # 187 (Sale Order: 185 of 348)

We originally thought that these were the original “Grateful Dead Records” 1973 "Wake of the Flood" steel record pressing plates that were rescued from the flooded basement of the Grateful Dead office in San Rafael, then moved to Rock Scully’s duplex in Hepburn Heights that he and Jerry were evicted and these were recovered with the few surviving copies. However noted Grateful Dead tape and vinyl expert spotted this and informed us that this is really the B side of From the Mars Hotel and that the numbers prove this. Not shown but included is a blue label commercial copy of the pressing plate that another consignor had taken from the box containing these acetates and production pieces at the same time who recognized that their piece belonged to the other lot and they happily reunited these pieces after all these years. Steel pressing plates are one of a kind artifacts from the Grateful Dead office and are among the rarest historical artifacts in this collection. Estimate $10,000-15000

Mouse's Original Art Golden Road Poster AOR 2.192

Lot # 199 (Sale Order: 197 of 348)

One of the crowning jewels of our auction event is Stanley Mouse’s original artwork for the 1966 Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion Grateful Dead Fan Club poster with photo by Herb Greene shown in the Art of Rock book on page 187 referenced as AOR 2.192.   This is the poster that introduced the Grateful Dead to people around the country before they’d even left San Francisco, and was the start of a vast national and later international network of tribes of followers created by newsletters and mailings that gave advance notice of tours, album releases, and other news – a community that still exists.   Stanley said that all he was told was they wanted a Fan Club poster and that was it. He got a nice photo from Herb Green to use and built everything around it, imagining that he was the most devoted fan of theirs in the entire world. In his vision he saw Dead Heads as Tibetan monks in Tibet who find true enlightenment and happiness on their own golden roads of unlimited devotion – a fair connection to the spiritual nature at the base of much Dead Head-ism.   This piece is one of founding pieces of the Grateful Dead family history and perhaps the most historically significant item in the auction.   Please note that all proceeds for the sale of this masterpiece will go directly to Stanley, a standing agreement with the auction house in place for well over a year now.  It is near and dear to Stanley’s heart and after an hour of deliberation he said to make the opening bid $420,000.  In light of record auction prices for other music related iconic artworks Stanley thinks that a fair and accurate auction estimate for this piece is… $1,500,000   The staff at Donley Auctions have asked that serious inquiries for this artwork please contact Stanley directly at his studio.

FD-26-2 Hand painted orig 1966 s/by Mouse/Kelley poster

Lot # 200 (Sale Order: 198 of 348)

The moment when Stanley Miller and Alton Kelley first saw the drawing of a skeleton and roses (in a copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam at the San Francisco Public Library) is one of the classic moments of Grateful Dead synchronicity, ever. As Kelley said, “Look at this, Stanley. Is this the Grateful Dead or is this the Grateful Dead?” It was, as Jerry Garcia remarked, “perfect.” They took the image, added lettering and framework decoration, and shazam, had not only a Family Dog poster but also an image that would serve the Grateful Dead for the duration. This piece is Stanley’s black and white variant from the ink test run on the plate. It was his and Kelley’s pattern to keep two or three of these for themselves, a few of which they signed and later traded to one another. After 49 years in storage, Stanley decided this anniversary year would be a good time to hand embellish his original silkscreen. Because it was painted only last fall, the colors are far sharper and more vibrant than the original. This original poster bears “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” credit in corner and is the one known in Eric King’s poster guide. It was printed on vellum stock.   The original print run as well as the second “OP-2” printing both bear “The Bindweed Press San Francisco” credits and are both printed on velum stock.   Please note that like several other items in this auction all proceeds for the sale of this masterpiece will go directly to Stanley, a standing agreement with the auction house in place for well over a year now. Stanley has set a reserve of this one-of-a-kind piece at $25,000. In light of recent sales, a sane fair-market estimate today is $66,000.
