US Army Civil War era .54 caliber Model 1864 Joslyn Cavalry Carbine - Antique (E2A1)

Lot # 11

This US Army Civil War era .54 caliber Model 1864 Joslyn Cavalry Carbine is in very good overall condition. The action appears to function properly, and the bore is brigh...moret, shiny, and moderately defined. The metal of this firearm is in very good condition. It has no pitting and has a light brown patina throughout the finish. The furniture is in good condition as there are dings and scratches throughout the stock and the butt plate has suffered a fairly large ding about half an inch long on the right side of the butt plate. This rifle was designed by Benjamin Joslyn, an American firearms designer who was regarded as a fairly successful inventor but became more known for his quarrels with the federal government concerning the details of his contracts. His first design was the Joslyn Carbine Model of 1861, which was a breechloading paper cartridge percussion cap design. This design was hardly considered for service by the Union. Joslyn's second design, the Model 1862 was an improved breechloading rimfire design that had an improved cam for better case extraction and used the .56-56 Spencer cartridge. This was extremely attractive to the Union Army as they had already had Spencer Carbines of the same caliber in service and the Joslyn Carbine was significantly cheaper to manufacture. 1,000 of these rifles were contracted for the Union Army, but the contract was terminated about halfway through production due to delays of manufacturing on Joslyn's part. During this time, Joslyn returned to the drawing board and made further improvements to the rifle. Thus, the Model 1864 was created. This rifle was chambered in both the newer .56-52 Spencer cartridge and the proprietary .54 caliber Joslyn cartridge, which is what this example is believed to be chambered in. This design was Joslyn's most successful design as the Union Army and Navy contracted 11,000 of these rifles. Approximately 3,000 of these rifles were produced at the Springfield Arsenal and is considered Springfield's first breechloading design that was successfully mass produced. Unfortunately, the United States would eventually terminate this contract early as well as the Civil War had ended. Joslyn felt deeply wronged by the federal government and would spend nearly the next two decades pursuing compensation for the loses he incurred on these projects. This would not be Joslyn's last successful contract, however, as he contracted his rifles to other foreign militaries, most notably to the Argentinians.
