Perhaps the most recognizable Wells Fargo collectible, the original treasure box, with dove-tailed corners and steel hardware. The front with painted legend: Wells Fargo & Co. Dark green finish. Harness leather straps. Interior with faint J.Y. Ayer maker stencil. Illegible agent marking on left end. Size: 10-inches X 12-inches x 20 inches.
Condition: Very good for this item. Showing heavy wear, cracks and wear to finish. Faint traces of previous red paint visible on interior and some cracks [possibly remaining from previous American Express use]. Leather handles intact.

Rare U.S. Smith & Wesson First Model Schofield Wells Fargo & Express Marked Single Action Revolver

Lot # 377 (Sale Order: 327 of 710)      

Serial no. 784, .45 caliber, 5-inch barrel, the right side of frame stamped: W.F. & Co. Ex. Re-nickeled finish. Likely refinished and cut to 5-inches by Bannerman or Schuyler, Hartley & Graham in New York when sold at surplus by the U.S. Army in 1880. Case-hardened hammer. Blued trigger and barrel hinge screw. Butt marked: U.S. Handsome and scarce after market checkered celluloid grips.
Condition: Fine as refinished. Retaining approximately 98-100% re-nickeled finish with scattered light wear and minor scratches. Light tracking line present. Hammer retaining vibrant case-hardening. Grips with light wear and patina. Mechanically tight and crisp.

*Rare Wells-Fargo Marked Colt Single Action Revolver Together with Factory Letter

Lot # 378 (Sale Order: 328 of 710)      

Serial no. 307005, .45 caliber, 5 1/2-inch barrel with single-line Hartford address. Early-style hammer. Rampant Colt hard rubber grips. Butt stamped: W.F. & Co. Sold together with two Colt factory letters confirming configuration and stating: "W.F. & Co. engraved on the butt of the revolver. Wells Fargo Company, New York, New York, c/o W.M. Ashton/October 19, 1908". Shipped in a lot of 12. Letter with remarks stating: "Mr. Ashton was in charge of the Supply Department for Wells Fargo from 1888 until 1910".
Condition: Very good to fine. Retaining approximately 20-30% finish, now fading to plum brown, mixed with aged patina. Minor pitting present near muzzle and on topstrap. Grips with moderate wear and marks. Action tight and crisp.

The brass padlock marked: J.H.W. Climax, New York. Self-closing spring-loaded keyhole cover with relief marking: W.F. & Co. Together with original key. Lanyard ring at bottom. These locks were used to secure the Wells Fargo strong boxes and were often attached to the boxes with a chain to prevent loss.
Condition: Excellent with mellow age patina. Lock functions perfectly.

The American Express Co. was formed in 1850 with the merging of Wells Fargo & Co. and Butterfield, Wasson & Company; Wells was the first president, Fargo was the secretary and Butterfield was the line superintendent. Ledger book dated 1876 and is almost full of entries from Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, Kansas, Ohio and other states. 2) Original Wells Fargo Register of Way-bills forwarded dated 1880. Most entries for California. About half filled with entries, the remainder blank pages. Cloth cover with oilcloth spine. 3) Original Wells Farge & Co. Express Statement Book dated 189_. Blank pages, never used. Black & white marbleized cover. 4) Wells Fargo Messenger Publication dated 1914. The company's public relations magazine, containing articles on history of Wells Fargo and related subjects. Color illustrated cover and photographs of Wells Fargo related people and places. 5) San Francisco 1915 Wells Fargo guidebook for the Pan-American Exposition. Contains a color fold-out map of the Exposition and thumbnail tourist travel notes on the city of San Francisco. 6) Five blank original Wells Fargo way-bill tags. 7)Five assorted antique cancelled Wells Fargo envelopes.
