VIKTOR SHVAIKO LIMITED EDITION PRINT 1995 "BISTRO LA BOUILLE" EST $300-400

Lot # 191 (Sale Order: 211 of 387)

Landscape limited edition print French Bistro Street Scene 34x43.5 framed and double matted Born in Altai, Russia and raised in one of Russia's most remote towns, Shvaiko grew up surrounded by the beauty of the wilderness. His natural inclination for fine arts and his strong urge to share his vision of nature drove him to Novoaltaisk Artistic School, one of the two best arts schools in the former Soviet Union. Four years of strenuous studies enabled him to acquire the skills of a true artist. The strict regimen of drawing, intricate technique of using colors and the influence of nineteenth century Russian artists brought Shvaiko close to a traditional academic style of painting. He now possessed the tools with which to express his feelings to the world. Shvaiko painted Altai landscapes and the mountainous countryside of Ukraine for a while, and exhibited in Moukachevo and in Hungary in 1991. However, he was disenchanted by the stifling effect the Russian bureaucracy had on the careers of young artists. Unable to obtain a Visa, he was permitted to travel to Yugoslavia and in the confusion of civil war, fled to Italy with his paintings strapped to his back. He survived by selling his paintings on the streets of Rome and eventually obtained passage to America, where he developed his penchant for painting cafes. His work is found in museums throughout Russia and he has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Canada....more

He moved to California with his family when he was a child and enrolled at the Otis Art Institute, studying with Ralph Holmes. Although he preferred portrait painting, he won recognition for landscapes and was so proficient technically that he spent his last year at Otis teaching. He worked as a commercial artist for M.G.M. and Columbia studios and then discovered a love for desert painting. He was also challenged by portrait painting, especially Navajo and Hopi Indians from Arizona and New Mexico. His goal was to have a painting look wet after it was completed, and to achieve this effect, he mixed his colors to get a luminosity by mixing oil paint, linseed oil, and turpentine, but he never used glaze or lacquer. He lived in LaQuinta from 1960-1965, when he and my his wife moved to Cottonwood, AZ, and from there to Quemado, NM, 1972-84. From 1984 until his death in 1994, they lived in Sonoita, AZ. JAMIE WYETH SIGNED NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION LITHOGRAPH "HORSE UNDER THE MOON" EST $200-400

Lot # 198 (Sale Order: 218 of 387)

Equine 115/300 Lithograph signed numbered Horse Upper Body W/COA 24x33 unframed Jamie Wyeth has since adolescence attracted considerable attention as a third-generation American artist: son of Andrew Wyeth, among the country's most popular painters, and the grandson of Newell Convers Wyeth, famous for his distinctive illustrations for the classic novels by Stevenson, Cooper, and Scott. "Everybody in my family paints - excluding possibly the dogs," says Jamie Wyeth. And non-human subjects are a common theme: long a sensitive observer of his rural surroundings, he paints livestock and other animals with the same care and intensity he devotes to portraits of people. He won precocious fame, in fact, with Portrait of Pig, his picture of a pink and white sow. The technical facility Wyeth showed even in his early work helps explain why his first one-man show in New York happened when he was only 20, and a retrospective in Omaha, Nebraska, occurred before his 30th birthday. James Browning Wyeth was born on July 6, 1946, in Wilmington, Delaware, just south of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where he grew up and still lives part of each year. With pencils, brushes, and paints always at hand, the boy found it natural to use them to express his impression of a book he'd read or a movie he'd seen. He left public school after the sixth grade to be tutored at home so he could devote more time to art. Having acquired most of his own schooling from private tutors, his father didn't consider a formal education necessary for an artist. Jamie Wyeth spent at least eight hours a day studying, sketching, and painting. His natural talent developed under the guidance of his father, who in his own youth had the benefit of N. C. Wyeth's instruction and encouragement. His father, he recalls, didn't actually give him lessons, but rather let him work and then offered constructive criticism....more

BRUCE WEINBERG SIGNED NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION HAND COLORED ETCHING "INVERSALTON" EST $300-800

Lot # 201 (Sale Order: 221 of 387)

Southwest 29/125 Hand Colored Etching "Monoprint" W/COA 29.5x43 unframed on unusual handmade paper Bruce Weinberg (1942-1994) Bruce Weinberg was a well respected master printmaker and long time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area. He studied Interior Design at the Philadelphia College of Art and Architectural Space Planning at Temple University. During the 1970's he studied printmaking and drawing at San Francisco's Fort Mason Art Center. Bruce created limited edition etchings as well as monoprints on his handmade paper. He was best known for multi-plate color hand pulled etchings of rugs and tapestries, which appear three dimensional with folds, fringes and turned up corners. Etchings were executed by use of traditional hard and soft ground etching technique. His works are rich in texture and color and show an incredible attention to detail. Weinberg's early artwork was influenced by design elements found in Middle Eastern textiles, architecture, exotic animals and an enchantment with Southwestern and American Indian design. In 1985 Weinberg began experimenting with techniques to produce paper for his etching plates. These papers were free flowing colored cotton pulps, beautifully textured with repeat patterns or marbleized, sometimes enhanced with gold, silver and copper leaf. Artworks in themselves, they constituted the base for his color etching on handmade paper. In 1990 he created "Tokyo Suite", his contemporary interpretation Japanese art. "Tokyo Suite" is composed of ten abstract etchings on handmade paper. These pieces may be considered a single art work of ten or any combination of individual etchings. Weinberg in his later years became involved in the creation of monoprints. These artworks carry bold, abstract, geometric and calligraphic designs which further explore American Indian motifs and post modern architecture....more
