1942 Philippines (Japanese WWII Occupation) 5 Centavos Banknote P#?103 Grades Select CU

Lot # 190 (Sale Order: 154 of 1881)

1942 Philippines (Japanese WWII Occupation) 5 Centavos Banknote P#?103 Grades Select CU. Japanese invasion money, officially known as Southern Development Bank Not...morees (Japanese: ??????? Dai T?-A Sens? gunpy?, "Greater East Asia War military scrip"), was currency issued by the Japanese Military Authority as a replacement for local currency after the conquest of colonies and other states in World War II. Japan printed this currency for many countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, North Borneo, Sarawak, Burma, Brunei, and several Oceania territories controlled by Australia. Some Japanese invasion notes are actually counterfeits produced by the American Office of Strategic Services or the British Special Operations Executive, meant to flood and destabilize the economy in the occupied areas, sometimes also including propaganda printed on the notes themselves.

1942-1945 Malaysia (Japanese WWII Occupation) 10 Dollars "Banana Money" Note P#?M7 Grades Choice CU

Lot # 201 (Sale Order: 164 of 1881)

1942-1945 Malaysia (Japanese WWII Occupation) 10 Dollars "Banana Money" Note P#?M7 Grades Choice CU. After Japanese forces occupied Malaya early in 1942, they intr...moreoduced new currency notes. Because the $10 note carried a picture of a banana plant, the wartime currency was referred to as banana money. For the first two years of the occupation, the Japanese maintained monetary discipline and kept circulation of this currency under control. However, with the country’s trading economy at a standstill, there was little to tax and, in order to fund the civil administration and purchase supplies for the military, the Japanese began printing more and more money. In December 1940, the active circulation of currency in Malaya was 120 million dollars. By the middle of 1945, the Japanese may have printed 4,000 million dollars, and the active circulation was 30 times greater than before the war. The predictable result was hyperinflation.

1923 Weiamr Germany 20,000 Mark P: 85F Grades vf+

Lot # 211 (Sale Order: 173 of 1881)

1923 Weiamr Germany 20,000 Mark P: 85F Grades vf+. In the early 1920s, post-WWI Germany saw its economy spiraling out of control. Hyperinflation started directly a...morefter the war in 1918, but truly took over the Weimar Republic from 1921 to 1923. The value of the Mark declined incredibly rapidly. 1 USD was equal to 50 German Marks at the beginning of 1920. Toward the end of 1923, 1 USD was equal to over 4,200,000,000,000 German Marks. At times, denominations of the Mark became less valuable than the paper and labor to print it almost immediately after printing. Thus, denominations of the Mark notes became incredibly large, ending up in the tens of trillions.
