Cased Smith and Wesson 1st Model Revolver of California Entrepreneur James L Coles
Lot # 60 (Sale Order: 60 of 248)
In 1855, Coles arrived in California with a mind to seek his fortune. After a short period with a mining company, he formed an architectural contracting business with partner Charles Bunnel. He soon became known as a trustworthy and well-mannered businessman, and in 1859, married into a wealthy quartz-mining family.
Returning to New York in 1861, Coles received a commission in a New York militia regiment raised in response to Washington's call for troops. It is at this time that the pistol is supposed to have been purchased, to serve as his side arm. He resigned his commission, however, when the unit was consolidated with another regiment. He then assisted in raising a battery of artillery as its Colonel, again resigning his commission when orders were given to assist in the defenses of Washington, citing a lucrative business offer.
Taking the offer, he helped found the firm of Coles & Ramsey, which operated as a military supply wholesale firm based out of D.C. Two years later, Coles sold his interest in the company and received yet another commission in a regiment bound for the west. Upon arrival in San Francisco, he once again resigned his commission and traveled to Idaho in search of more business opportunities.
This pistol was featured in a January, 2020 article in Military Trader magazine.

Another is an invoice of medical equipment from the 35th Mississippi during the defense of Mobile, Alabama in 1864. Also included is another invoice from September of that year, under "Sears Brigade".
After the war he busied himself with farming, and in 1869 moved to Calvert, Texas, where he was one of the founding citizens. He continued to practice medicine in Texas until his death in 1873, a victim of the yellow fever epidemic sweeping the state which had also claimed the life of his wife just days before. Custom engraved and Cased Silver Mounted Colt Model 1873 Revolver With Spurs
Lot # 75 (Sale Order: 75 of 248)
Engraved metal with Silver overlay. Solid Silver grips relief engraved. Cased in a walnut case with a pair of Silver spurs relief engraved. All serial numbers match, the revolver was refinished by the Artist.
While not marked, we believe the artist to be California Silversmith Edward Bohlin. The engraving of the firearm and spurs along with the silver work is in his tradition. He was a maker to the stars of the silver screen days, and many famous actors had firearms, holsters, buckles and belts made by him that were worn while filming. This revolver is no exception, sporting elegant scroll work and finishing.
Mirroring the quality of the revolver, the spurs are beautifully engraved with matching scrollwork and finished in a nice high blue that enhanced the beauty of the piece. The accompanying walnut case is lined with red velvet. This set of pistols was featured in a Gun Report Article by Ron Norman in the 1970"s.
