HISTORIC COLT SAA OWNED BY BOB FORD / JESSE JAMES

Lot # 302 (Sale Order: 304 of 656)

SERIAL NUMBER12267. BARREL 7-1/2 inch . CALIBER .45 LC cartridge. MANUFACTURED 1874. Historic Colt SAA Revolver attributed to Bob Ford, assassin of Jesse James. Finished nickel with one-piece walnut grips. Early "donut" style ejector rod, and italic one-line barrel address. Left side of frame marked "U.S." No other U.S. Ordnance Inspection stamps are found. Early 2-line patent address. Right side of frame is stamped "JESSE" in tilting block letters. Left side of frame, below the recoil shield is stamped "JAMES". This very revolver is pictured on page 186, in "Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia Volume II" by Keith Cochran. Referring to the famous photograph of Bob Ford holding a 7-1/2 inch, nickel plated Colt Single Action Army revolver, with one-piece wood grips. Much speculation and controversy has stirred over the years whether the gun in the photograph is the revolver Ford used to kill Jesse James on April 3, 1882, or perhaps, as some believe, a .44 caliber Smith & Wesson Number 3 revolver. It is interesting to note that Bob Ford swore until his death, the Colt shown with him in the photograph was indeed the revolver he used. Bob Ford was dispatched by both barrels from a 10-gauge shotgun on June 8, 1892 in Creede Colorado by Missourian, Ed O'Kelly. Unfortunately, the serial number of the "photo gun" is unknown and most likely lost to history. Mr. Cochran's research identifies four Colt Single Action Army revolvers, as potentially being the Colt held by Bob Ford in the famous photograph. This revolver s/n 12267 is the number one candidate, along with serial numbers 23960, 50432, and 68800. Serial number 12267, offered in this lot comes directly from the estate of well-known South Dakota collector, and firearms expert James O. Aplan. Mr. Aplan, among many things was a scholar, cowboy, Korean War Veteran, and rodeo champion. He was held in high regard by fellow collectors and Western Historians. Items from his personal collection can be found in several major museums across the country. Mr. Aplan acquired s/n 12267 in 1982 from another well-known collector, Doug Janke of South Dakota. In reading documentation and personal notes accompanying this revolver, both Mr. Janke and James Aplan believed this was indeed the Colt revolver held by Bob Ford in the photograph. Serial number 12267 has remained in the Aplan family collection (41-years) until offered by his wife Peggy for this sale. CONDITION: Very good overall. Approximately 50-60% original nickel plating remains. Action is tight. Scattered areas of flaking and abrasions located mainly along the barrel. Cylinder is mostly a dark brown patina. No serial number found on cylinder. Bore is turning dark. Excellent walnut grips showing moderate wear. U.S. Ordnance Inspector stamp "R.A.C" (Rinaldo A. Carr) observed on butt, indicating the grips are possibly period replacement. Grips fit correctly to the frame and backstrap. Replaced screws on the frame and triggerguard. A fascinating and desirable early Colt Single Action Army revolver, worthy of the most advanced collection or Museum. -MKS- / ANTIQUE Antique / -MKS-

RARE DOCUMENTED COLT MARTIAL WALKER D CO. NO.218

Lot # 304 (Sale Order: 306 of 656)

SERIAL NUMBER: -D- Company Number 218 BARREL: 8-Inch CALIBER: .44 Percussion MANUFACTURED: 1847. The Colt Model of 1847 (Walker) was Samuel Colt's first success in selling revolvers in quantity to the U.S. Government, thus setting the stage for the inventor to make a name for himself in military and commercial firearm manufacturing. In the words of the late Colt Historian and author R.L. "Larry" Wilson, "The Paterson Model made Sam Colt famous, but the Walker gave him keys to the mint". A collaborated effort between Samuel Colt and Texas Ranger Captain Samuel H. Walker, national hero of the Texas-Mexico Wars, this powerful revolver became subject of legend and fame, forever linked to the Texas Ranger romantic lore. Manufactured in Eli Whitney's factory in Connecticut, only 1,100 were produced with 1,000 going to military sales and 100 reserved of civilian sales. The revolver was known for its powerful performance, delivering .44 caliber shots in a six-cylinder design. The gun is a behemoth, weighing four pounds, nine ounces, producing heavily felt recoil. Though originally intended for close quarter cavalry engagements, the Colt Walker was known to reliably shoot much further. Captain Walker himself reported the revolver shooting past 100 yards with little effort, further saying "It would take a Texan to shoot it". Captain Walker was unfortunately killed in action soon after receiving his presentation pair, on October 9, 1847 at the command of 250 men heroically chasing 1,600 Mexican troops out of the town of Huamantla. This famous weapon saw very heavy use during Military engagements with the majority of production being loss or destroyed during battle. It is believed that less than 100 authentic examples are known to exist today, and are considered the "Blue Chip" of Colt collecting. In an August 1939 article written for "Hobbies" magazine by early historian and author Wilbur F.S. Quick, Mr. Quick documents his 10-year study (starting in 1928) searching out Colt Walker Revolvers that could be proven as authentic. The article is titled "THERE ARE FIFTY WALKER COLTS". In the 1939 article Mr. Quick states: "After the complete story of the life of Samuel Hamilton Walker was published in my March 1938 Hobbies article, many collectors have asked "How many of the moguls are yet extant?" Over a 10-year extensive search, Mr. Quick found 44 Walkers in the hands of United States collectors or dealers. Nearly complete records were found on 36 of these. In the Hobbies 1939 article, Mr. Quick offers a list of the 36 Colt Walkers he was able to compile "complete records" on. Of those 36 documented guns, he has listed our subject revolver, D Company No. 218. Mr. Quick goes on to say in his article: "The author believes that ten of these revolvers are in original factory condition except some service wear; ten others are complete in parts that were rebuilt in the Colt factory; ten others have restored parts made and outfitted by gunsmiths during their service; the balance is 75% whole, but the repairs are crude. Mr. Quick further states: "The unexpected may always happen as a miracle, but not to exceed a dozen more will ever be found. It is really safe to conclude that there are but 50 Walker Colts in existence today" (1939). In a follow-up article, authored by Mr. Quick in the November 1940 edition of Hobbies Magazine, titled "Hunting for the Walkers", Mr. Quick reveals the owner of Colt Walker D Company No. 218, the same revolver he documented in his 1939 article as 1 of 36 Walkers having "complete records". The owner of D Company No. 218 was well-known Texas collector J.W. (Joe) Bates. It is believed, and supported by several documents accompanying this fine Colt Walker, that Joe Bates later sold D Company No. 218 to another well-known and celebrated Colt collector, James Serven. Mr. Serven in turn sold the revolver to Osborne Klavestad, owner and founder of the "Stagecoach Museum" located in Shakopee, Minnesota. D Company No. 218 is pictured on page 218 of the book: "Stagecoach Museum Gun Collection". The revolver is photographed with a brass collection identification tag, No. 2901 attached to the triggerguard, the tag is still present today. During 1974, Mr. Klavestad loaned Colt Walker D Company No. 218 along with another celebrated revolver, a Colt Buntline Special from his Stagecoach Museum for a special exhibit located at the Disneyland Convention Center in Los Angeles California. The exhibit was titled: "Centuries of Antiques". These fine revolvers were on displayed during March 1974. Sometime during early 1980s, well known Collector/Dealer, Ray Saign of Minneapolis Minnesota purchased D Company No. 218 from Osborne Klavestad. Mr. Saign later sold the revolver to another well-known collector, Richard Donaldson of Grand Detour Illinois. CONDITION: This historic 176-year-old revolver, originally found in the interior of Old-Mexico sometime prior to 1938 by Texas Colt Collector, Joe Bates remains in very good condi

Barrel legends are sharp and grips are excellent. All matching numbers on frame, barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap.
