ALS WILLIAM PINKERTON TO WELLS FARGO ABOUT ROBBERY

Lot # 274 (Sale Order: 280 of 592)

Lot of framed, two autographed letters written by William A Pinkerton to Colonel Dodge of the Wells Fargo Company. The letters read as follows: Chicago, Dec. 29th, 1901. Col. Dodge, Special Agent, Wells-Fargo Express Co., Kansas City, Mo. My Dear Colonel:- This letter is strictly confidential, and under no circumstances must you tell the source of your information, or let it be known that I have written to you on the subject.  The following information comes to me from what I consider a strictly reliable source, and I know you would not want to injure me by giving the thing out in a way that would uncover the source of the information. Otherwise, it might at sometime seriously interfere with both of us. If you act on this information, cautiously, it may prevent a robbery from being perpetrated on your company, as there is now one in contemplation. It appears there is quite a gang of professional thieves drifting in and out of Shreveport, La., and some of them are quite intimate with a conductor running on the Houston, East & West Texas Ry. into Shreveport, and your office at that place is "Spotted" to be robbed. There is said to be a messenger named Conley in the service of your Company down there, and they are figuring on making negotiations with this fellow to allow himself to be robbed, the intention being to commit the robbery at Houston, Texas, and leave the train at that point, getting off in the suburb. I am not sure that Conley will acquiesce to it, but an effort is being made in that direction, and there is no doubt that a robbery is contemplated not only on the Messenger, but at your office at Shreveport, La. I not know just who the parties are that are concerned in these contemplated robberies, as there are a large number of professional thieves operating in Louisiana between Houston, Beaumont and New Orleans. Watch for these points and see if my information is not correct? Now, do not mention this to a soul outside of your Supt., do not let it leak out among your employees that you have this matter in hand, otherwise you are liable to do me a great deal of harm. I give you this information as a matter of friendship for you. Yours truly, William A. Pinkerton Chicago Ill., Jan. 12th, 1902. Col. F.J. Dodge, Sp'l Officer, Wells Fargo & Co., Houston, Texas. My dear Sir:- I am in receipt of yours of the 9th inst. and note what you say concerning the name of the messenger given being that of a conductor. I may have got things mixed a little, the information came to me from an underground source and I gave it to you as I got it. I consider it reliable.  The only thing to be guarded about is that no leakage occurs, as that would make it unpleasant for my informant. An express robbery was being planned, and the conductor was in with it, he being the party who was to approach your Messenger and have him acquiesce in the robbery. My advice was that the robbery was to be committed as the train was pulling out of Houston, and the robbers were to leave the train at some suburb of Houston. If I hear anything further in regard to the matter, I will let you know. Was also informed that a robbery of your office at Shreveport was under contemplation. I am always glad to inform you of anything that is of interest to your Company. Sincerely yours , William Pinkerton William A. Pinkerton was the son of Allan Pinkerton, the entrepreneur who started the famous Pinkerton Detective agency in 1850, a private company with a reputation for being one of the most reputable law enforcement and crime detection forces in the country. Along with his younger brother Robert, William joined the family business as a clerk and rose to the rank of detective. When Allan Pinkerton died in 1884, William and Robert took charge and continued their father’s vision for the agency, developing innovative crime-solving techniques, building an extensive collection of mug shots, and newspaper articles about wanted outlaws, and creating criminal histories on known offenders—practices that would later be adopted by the FBI. When the notorious robber known as The Missouri Kid blasted a bank in Union County, William had the foresight to pair his headstrong, street-smart detective, Charles Schumacher with the introverted, desk-jockey crime analyst, George Dougherty for a manhunt that would take many a twist and turn. Though no longer family-owned, the Pinkerton Agency today is a leader in security services.
