GRANVILLE HENRY SINGLE SHOT .38 RIMFIRE RIFLE

Lot # 216 (Sale Order: 227 of 592)

SERIAL NUMBER N/A. BARREL 20". CALIBER .38 RIM FIRE. MANUFACTURED CIRCA 1872. Granville Henry Cousin to Tyler B, Henry ( famous for his Henry repeating rifle) was a very prominent gun maker in Boulton Pa, The family had produced arms for the US Government as far back as the War of 1812 and continued to make arms until 1904. Granville Henry patented a rotating breech single shot rifle for self contained cartridges in 1872. Most being small bore 22 with some larger bore rifles as large as 38 & 44. The design was inspired by Pa, muzzle loading arms with crescent butts Highly figured local woods, patch boxes, double set triggers and pewter forend caps as well as long rifle inspired trigger guards. His rifles were not serial numbered or makers marked as he wholesaled his rifles to larger dealers with a very strong dealer network in the ST, Louis Mo, region. A well researched and detailed article was published in the American Rifleman magazine in Feb, 1987 detailing the evolution of and history of the Henry family as well as Granville Henry and his cartridge single shot rifles. This rifle with 20" round barrel with globe front sight and rotating breech action with external back action exposed hammer lock and Pa, long rifle inspired tang sight has fine figured stained maple stocks with patch box, iron crescent burr and pewter forend cap with forearm retained by a single wedge. Double set triggers and a simple iron finger rest trigger guard with its long rifle heritage being obvious. Research has revealed that less than an estimated 1000 rifles of this design were ever produced. CONDITION. Good with strong rifled bore with some oxidation in grooves, The action operates properly with a very light sear engagement. The double set triggers operate properly. The wood stocks are very good with some period of use impressions and blemishes. The iron fitting and barrel have toned to a pleasant chocolate patina. The rifle is missing the ramrod. This rifle is a recent discovery from southern Missouri, A unique piece of the Henry Family arms making history. ANTIQUE
