ORDER OF THE GOLDEN GRAIN SECOND CLASS MEDAL AND WATCH ATTRIBUTED TO CAPTAIN OF COMPOSITE GUNBOAT PE

Lot # 2001 (Sale Order: 1 of 576)      

Order of the Golden Grain Second Class Medal and gold pocket watch presented to Captain Charles H. Palmer, captain of the composite gunboat Peng Chao Hai. The Peng Chao Hai was launched in 1869 as a composite gunboat and would eventually be used as a customs boat. The ship was crewed by ten British sailors and was commanded by Captain Charles H. Palmer of the Royal Navy Reserve. The lot includes an Order of the Golden Grain Second Class Medal and a half hunter gold watch that was presented to Captain Palmer by H.E. Wan, the Superintendent of Customs in Canton, China on June 24th 1873. These medals were awarded for outstanding civil or military achievement and were issued by President Yuan Shi-kai. CONDITION: The medal is missing its ribbon. There are slight cracks and scratches but the medal is well preserved as there appears to be minimal enamel loss. Overall good. The watch is ornate and features several attractive features. The bezel exhibits the engraved Palmer family crest. The back of the watch has a beautiful presentation to Palmer which was transcribed on a small piece of paper that is displayed with the watch in the case. 18k yellow gold 49mm demi-hunter cased pocket watch. Stem wound, lever-set movement no. 6165. Watch is double signed for "Geo. Falconer, Hong Kong" on the dial and movement. Cuvette is adorned with a beautifully hand engraved presentation dated 1873. Case is fully hallmarked and dated: Leopard's head (London) q (1871 date code) 18 & Crown (18k gold assay/standard). White enamel single-sunken dial with black Roman numeral hours, Arabic seconds sub-dial, and blued steel spade hands. Blue enameled Roman numeral hour register on demi lid is near mint. Gross weight 112.2 grams. CONDITION: Excellent overall condition with no damage to case or hairlines to dial. The watch is currently running. The pin-set function and hands have also been tested, and are in proper working order. The palmer family crest and presentation engraving remain crisp. This is a wonderful medal and watch identified to a Royal Navy Captain. JLD/RC

LOT OF 2: PATTERN 1891 SPANISH AMERICAN WAR SPANISH OFFICER'S EAGLE HEAD SWORD MACHETE.

Lot consists of (A) 1891 pattern Spanish officer's eagle head sword machete. This type of blade was used in service during the Spanish American War. The hatched point blade exhibits a dark gray patina and was dulled, resharpened, and later dulled at the point. There are faint markings on either side of the blade, the left side is marked "No 87" while the maker's mark on the right side is illegible. The hilt exhibits a Spanish Eagle pommel, and is crafted of solid nickel silver alloy. There are two checkered grip scales which are held in place by 3 screws on each side. CONDITION: The blade exhibits scattered pitting and several chips on the edge. The right side grip is cracked and separating from the area towards the guard, but remains sturdy. Overall fair. (B) 1891 pattern Spanish officer's eagle head sword machete complete with scabbard. The hatched point blade exhibits a dark gray patina and is marked "CORONA & CIA / ACERO FUNDIDO" below a crown. The hilt exhibits a Spanish Eagle pommel that exhibits a brown patina. There are two checkered grip scales which are held in place by two screws on each side. CONDITION: The blade exhibits slight pitting as well as several chips and dents on the edge. There are dents and pitting on the guard with handling wear evident on the grips. CUTTY SARK WOODEN SHIP MODEL WITH DISPLAY CASE.

The Cutty Sark was a British Clipper Ship built in 1898 specially for tea trade with China. With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and advancements in steamships, the Cutty Sark was only used for a couple years in the tea trade before turning to the wool trade with Australia. She was sold to a Portuguese company, and renamed "Ferreira" in 1895. She continued as a cargo ship until 1922, and later became a training ship in Falmouth, Cornwall. She transferred to the Thames Nautical Training College in Greenhithe in 1938 and was used as a cadet training ship until 1954 when she was put in permanent dry dock and public display in Greenwich London. This masterfully hand-built scale model features a carved solid wood hull with hand laid tiles. All hand tied rigging and hand shaped masts and spars. Comes with a glass display case. CONDITION: Excellent overall and masterfully build with excellent detail. MKS This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made.

German Model 1841 bolt action needle rifle. Made "1858" as dated on the right side of the receiver. Matching serials on the chamber and bolt components. Barrel does not match. Imperial eagle proofs on the chamber and barrel. "SOEMMERDA N.D" marked on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the stock has a sticker marked "Fusil DREYSE (Allemand)/trouve sue le Champ de Bitaille/Frontwiller?" Possible a war trophy from the Franco-Prussian war? Right side of the stock has two imperial cartouches. Blade front sight with 3 position flip up rear. Metal is still in the white, with brown patina forming in areas. Brass stock bands and trigger guard. Stock was lightly sanded at some point. CONDITION: Metal has patina forming in most areas with general wear. Stock has light wear and a few dings/scratches. Rifled bore has some frosting and pitting in the grooves, but rifling remains strong. Seems mechanically fine. Lot consists of (A) Swiss M.78 Vetterli bolt action rifle. Made early 1880s at the Waffenfabrik Bern factory in Switzerland. Still chambered for the original rimfire cartridge. No import mark found. Matching serials on the bolt, receiver, rear sight, butt plate and barrel. Elevator does not match. Good cartouches on the right side of the stock and on the comb. Original blade front sight and adjustable rear. Original blued finish. Correct light oil finish on the stock/forearm. Factory metal butt plate. Includes a French 1866 Chassepot sabre bayonet and scabbard. CONDITION: Metal retains 75% of its finish with general wear. Action is full of grease. Stock has a few dings and scratches. There is an arsenal repair, dowel through the wrist, on the wrist of the stock. Bore is clean overall with crisp rifling. Seems mechanically fine. Bayonet has general wear and handling marks. Blade has not been sharpened. Scabbard has a few dents. (B) Remington-Lee 1885 magazine rifle. Made mid 1880s. Top of the receiver is marked "REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY, ILLION N.Y. U.S.A/SOLE MANUFATURES AND AGENTS", while the left side is marked "PATENTED NOV.4TH 1879". No other markings can be found on the metal components. This may be a foreign contract gun. Left side of the stock is marked "NGH". Blade front sight with rear tangent. Of note, the rear sight is on backwards. Metal components have no signs of added finish. Stock has its original light oil finish. Factory metal butt plate. No magazine is included with this rifle. CONDITION: Metal has formed a brown patina in most areas, with no signs of cleaning or polish. Stock has a few handling marks. There is a crack on the left side of the wrist. Bore is obstructed with what appears to be a bullet. Otherwise, mechanically fine. Chilean Contract Mauser Model 1895 bolt action rifle. Made at Ludwig Loewe circa 1895-96. Sharp crest on the chamber. No import mark found. Matching serials on all the numbered components, including the rear sight and cleaning rod! Blued finish on the metal components, with the bolt being polished. Stock has a smooth oil finish, and was lightly sanded (possibly done at the arsenal). Smooth metal butt plate. Includes attached generic leather sling. CONDITION: Metal retains 90% of its finish with some light edge wear and handling marks. Strong fire blue visible on the floor plate and bolt release. Wood is excellent with a few handling marks and scratches. Bore has some light graying in the grooves, but rifling remains crisp. Mechanically fine. Sling has light wear. This conversion was done at the Kynoch factory in England. Top of the barrel is marked "KYNOCH-GUN-FACTORY-ASTO, with the left side marked "MUSKET-43-77-380". Receiver is marked "KYNOCH'S PATENT" on the left side. Left side of the stock is marked "U.F. MFG.CO.". No import mark found. Mismatched serials throughout. Stock roundel has been plugged with no markings visible. Bayonet lug still present on the barrel. Blade front sight with a rear tangent adjustable to 1000 meters. Metal components have a a blued finish turning to a heavy brown patina in most areas. Stock has an arsenal applied oil finish. Made by the Springfield Armory in 1884, a mere 753 were ever manufactured. It is a bolt action repeating rifle with cartridges fed through the butt. Built with iron mountings, blued finish, military leaf style rear sight, post front sight, button tip cleaning rod, two barrel bands, sling swivels, and walnut stock. This rifle was approved for US Government service in 1882. Left side of barrel has the "VP" eagle proof. Top of frame is stamped "US SPRINGFIELD 1884". Left side of rear stock has inspector stamp in rectangle "SWP 1884" for Sam Porter. Cursive proof "P" in circle on buttstock. A large "3" has been stamped under forearm (generally unit and/or rifle ID number). CONDITION: Barrel retains approximately 95% original factory blue finish. 80%+ blue on bands and cap. Traces of case colors on frame, which have basically patterned out. 50% original blue on trigger guard, mostly on forward section. Buttplate has original blued loading gate. Bolt handle is a straight pull. Fine action. After the failures of the Trapdoor at the Battle of Little Bighorn, the military was actively pursuing more reliable firearms, especially repeating firearms. This was one of the few that got past the experimental stage during that era and saw issue to several units on the Western Frontier. Beautiful, very hard to find military rifle from the Indian Wars. In 1902, Colt filled a government order for 4,600 of these modified .45 caliber Model 1878 revolvers featuring a significantly larger trigger guard and stronger mainspring. Otherwise standard with blued finish. 6" round barrel, 1-line address, blade front sight, frame notch rear sight, 6-shot fluted cylinder, lanyard loop, and checkered hard rubber bird's head grips. "RAC" inspector stamps found on left of frame, cylinder, and trigger guard. "US" mark, in addition to "JTT" inspector stamp and 1902 date on right side of frame. CONDITION: Fair. Traces of original thinning blued finish retained on frame with more significant quantiles exhibited on barrel and cylinder. Balance a brown patina with abrasions. 2 extra screw holes have been drilled in grip frame. Grips good with some wear and a few handling marks. New Army double action revolver manufactured by Colt in 1901. Left side of barrel is stamped "COLT. D.A. 38", with the top bearing Colt's 2-line address. Left side of frame bears the encircled Rampant Colt logo. Features include a high polish blue finish, 6" barrel, half-moon front sight, frame notched rear sight, as well as 2-piece encircled Colt checkered hard rubber grips. Matching assembly number "67" is present on the frame, cylinder crane, cylinder latch, and are also hand-scribed on the interior of the grip panels. CONDITION: Metal components retain good amounts of their original factory applied high polish blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear, thinning, and handling marks all around that show through to gray and brown patinas. Matching assembly number "67" is present on the frame, cylinder crane, cylinder latch, and are also hand-scribed on the interior of the grip panels. CONDITION: Metal components retain good amounts of their original factory applied high polish blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear, thinning, and handling marks all around that show through to gray and brown patinas. Colt Model 1901 US Army double action revolver. Made 1901. 2 line company address and patent dates on the top of the barrel, with "COLT D.A. 38" marked on the left side. U.S. Army markings on the butt. "R.A.C." inspector stamps on the left side of the frame, cylinder and barrel. Round, steel barrel with half moon front sight and u-notch rear. Factory blued finish on the metal components. Lanyard ring and stud still present. Grips are the correct vintage, but have been checkered. Includes an original "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/1904" marked leather ammunition pouch. CONDITION: Metal retains 50% of its original finish with areas of wear and some brown patina starting to form. Grips have handling marks and scratches. Fine bore with strong rifling. Tight hammer. Cylinder does have some side-side movement. Good timing and lockup. Cylinder latch sticks, but is working. Nice World War I 339th Ambulance Company photo, ephemera, and revolver grouping attributed to Edward Bertram. The grouping includes 29 large photos, 24 small photos, newspaper clippings, the menu for the 337th's return dinner in Detroit in 1919, polar bear reunion medal, North Russia polar bear patch, Type I USNA and medical collar discs, and wool overseas hat. The photo content shows the soldiers in North Russia, barracks, sled teams, soldier antics, civilians, ambulances, and military drills. The patch is very nice and is of 2-piece felt construction. The revolver is a double action hammerless similar to a British Bulldog and marked Baby American with serial number 1175. 2 - /4" barrel in a .38 caliber cartridge. 2 piece plain bone grips. CONDITION: The revolver is in fair condition with traces of nickel plating mixing with a heavy brown patina. The grips are good with large crack on right grip panel. Cylinder will not advance and trigger will not return forward. Bore is dark. The newspaper clippings and ephemera exhibit small tears and have yellowed over time. The photos are clear and many exhibit tears and rough edges. The insignia has been well preserved, hat exhibits typical wear. Overall fair-good. Fires by manually pushing the slide forward, and manually pulling it back to extract and re-cock the round. This gun typically came with a 3", 7 -1/2" and 20" barrel, with this example only including the latter. Left side of the frame is marked "FILA ARMS" over a bear. Right side of the frame is marked "MODEL 1920", with the company address marked on the rear. Matching serial numbers on the front strap, slide and stock iron. Round steel barrel with blade front sight and rear peep ladder. Factory blued finish on the metal components. Wood has its original light oil finish. Smooth metal butt plate. Blued steel magazine is unmarked. CONDITION: Metal retains 50% of its original finish with most areas forming and even brown patina. There are scratches around the safety area.
