Lot # 1404 (Sale Order: 401 of 460)      

Circa 1908. This vintage brace consecutive numbered guns are built with 29" blacked steel barrels (dovetail lump - A/1, chopper lump - B/2) and with ejectors, smooth game concave ribs, and brass round front bead sights. Ribs are marked "1" and "2" in gold near breech and read "BOSS & CO. 13/14 CORK STREET LONDON W1". Chokes on the (A/1) gun are Improved Cylinder and Improved Cylinder and on the (B/2) barrels are Half and Half. The bright finished sidelock ejector actions with single triggers (A/1 triple release pull), auto-safe and gold lined cocking indicators are engraved in the traditional Boss Rose bouquets and scrolls with "Boss's Patent" just above "Boss & Co" in banner on lockplates forward of engraved and blacked trigger guards with rolled right edge and long tangs. In front of the trigger guard is engraved "Boss's Patent / No 11278". Top levers are marked "1" and "2" in gold on top lever and the word SAFE also in gold. Reddish brown European walnut stocks with strong straight grain have traditional straight hand grip, drop points, point pattern checkering, checkered butt and engraved gold oval. Splinter style forend with Anson style push button release. Oak & leather trunk case with outer canvas cover. The case includes the following accessories: 2 piece wooden cleaning rod, 2 Boss cleaning cloths, 4 nickel plated snap caps, and cleaning tools. The lid displays a vintage Boss paper trade label. CONDITION: Barrels benefit from reblackening and lettering on ribs are recut. Barrels retain (A/1) 93% black and (B/2) 90% black. Bores are bright. Stocks have slight handling marks, the forend tips are slightly reshaped and also have slight handling marks. Actions have crisp triggers and the ejectors are well timed. The case is in good overall condition showing handling, use and storage marks. A pair of nice guns from a London Best gunmaker. Engraved frame with tight scroll vignettes and Parker Brothers Banner on left and right side exactly like an "AHE" Grade would have. Gun has double triggers and automatic safety. A vintage circa 1909, 26" dove tailed barreled game gun with 2 - 1/2" chambers, ejectors, swamped concave rib and steel round front bead sight. Rib reads "JOSEPH LANG & SON, 102, NEW BOND STREET, LONDON". The neutral cast gun is stocked with a honey colored piece of European walnut which has a checkered pommel grip (semi pistol), drop points, oval with initials (HLP) and a ventilated brown Pachmayer pad. Vintage forend with smooth checkering and an Anson push button release. The gray patina sidelock action is built with a single mechanical trigger, auto safe and is engraved with fine English rose & scroll. The gun comes with a plastic travel hard case. CONDITION: Good. Barrels with very little original black left, but are sound. Stock appears to be an older replacement with good strong lines, figure with visible handling wear. Forend with missing left side tip, smooth checkering, visible tarnish to hardware and fully operational. Action is mechanically sound. Engraving is good. Case is good. A good shooter. Vintage pair of 12 bore game guns were built in 1905. The pair has 27 - 7/8" sleeved (in 1984) barrels with ejectors, third fastener, smooth game concave ribs, brass round bead front sights. Barrels read "NEW SLEEVED BARRELS BY JOHN DICKSON & SON." "JAMES MACNAUGHTON & SONS, 30 HANOVER STREET EDINBURGH & PERTH." The ribs are also number engraved "1" & "2" with a bit of floral scroll just behind near breech. Nice, vintage cast off reddish brown smoky fiddleback stocks with sharp checkering, English straight grips as well as on their checkered butts. Stocks also have gold ovals with bird on branch with leaf in its beak and reads "ALTA PETIT". Matching splinter forends with Anson styled releases and sharp checkering. Bright coin colored rounded boxlock actions with third bite are scalloped and engraved with light scroll with "MACNAUGHTON & SONS." in a bar. Actions also have double triggers protected by blued trigger guards, blacked top levers and very unique blued automatic swing safes. Bottom actions also appear to be a solid piece of steel that extends itself as the gun's long bottom strap. Pair comes with 2 sets of nickel plated snap caps. CONDITION: Good. (A/1) Barrels retain 92% of a 1984 new black from sleeving with various small handling marks. Bores are shiny. (A/1) Stock is in good condition with some handling marks - checkering at bottom of grip has been bruised. Action proofed in 2004 and delivered to our consignor in 2018. Chopper lump barrels signed "D.H. SINNERTON" and "LONDON, ENGLAND". Brass bead on smooth concave tapered game rib with light line engraving over breeches and a small sprig of scroll over breech at rib. London proofs on barrel flats, serial number on both tubes, importer mark on short rib. Boss style splinter forend with Anson style push button release engraved with scroll at release and escutcheon, roses with flanking scroll on exterior iron, coil spring ejectors for assisted opening. Checkered in point pattern with vacancy for diamond escutcheon. Interior iron with serial number. Action flats with London proofs. Single fluted traditional style Boss sidelock ejector action well engraved with traditional English rose and scroll with simple line borders with "D.H. SINNERTON" above lockplates. Disc set strikers. Engravers signature "M. Smith" on right side of trigger plate. Trigger guard with rolled right edge. Double triggers. Classic drop points behind lockplates. Automatic safety with "SAFE" inlaid in gold. English style straight stock with point pattern checkering at wrist. Gold oval at belly with "CMC" engraved, matching case. Highly figured stock cast off approximately 1/4". Checkered butt. Housed in a leather wrapped case with brass corners and canvas cover which has a leather tablet stitched to lid with "CMC" stamped. Built by David Sinnerton, a former Purdey finisher and one of the best known private U.K. gunmakers. The guns barrels feature the "Holland & Holland" styled self opening system. Barrels have smooth narrow/tapered concave game ribs with their appropriate numbers "1" and "2" in gold on top of floral scroll near breech and with small brass front bead sights. Ribs read "D.H. SINNERTON, LONDON, ENGLAND". The chamber lengths are 2 -3/4". Chokes are Improved Modified and Improved Modified on the pair of guns. Barrels also with London proofs and guns serial numbers on all tubes. Deluxe Turkish walnut stock with very smoky and marbled flow, English straight grip, fine point closely separated checkering, traditional drop points behind Holland & Holland styled side locks, gold oval with fancy cursive engraved "CMC", finished to a fine checkered butt. Coin finished sidelock ejector actions are exquisitely engraved with fruiting grape vines and leaves with "D.H. SINNERTON" in banner. Engravers signature of Peter Cusack sits just at top left of trigger guard bow. Circa 2019. A nice pair of 20 bore side by sides with well crafted blacked 29" chopper lump barrels. Built by David Sinnerton, the former Purdey finisher and now known as one of the best known U.K. gunmakers. The guns barrels are built on the "Holland & Holland" styled self opening mechanism. Barrels have smooth narrow/tapered concave game ribs with their appropriate numbers "1" and "2" in gold just ahead of a bit of floral scroll near breech and with small brass front bead sights. Ribs read "D.H. SINNERTON, LONDON, ENGLAND". Their chamber lengths are 2 -3/4". Chokes are Modified and Modified on the pair of guns. Barrels are stamped with London proofs and guns serial numbers on stamped on bottom of all tubes. The handsome Turkish walnut stocks with rich and smoky grain, English straight grip, fine point closely separated checkering, traditional drop points behind Holland & Holland styled sidelocks, gold oval with fancy cursive engraved "CMC" are finished to a fine checkered butt. The brushed coin finished sidelock ejector actions are nicely engraved with fine rose and scroll with "D.H. SINNERTON" at top of action bar. Engraver's signature of Martin Smith sits at center right of the case colored double triggers. Trigger guard bow with rolled right hand edge, long bottom strap also handsomely engraved with rose and scroll with serial numbers at center of strap. Actions are built with gold line cocking indicators and auto safes "SAFE" in gold. Trigger guard with blue at bow, toned at tang. Forend has chipping at left side towards tip. Stock has factory cheekpiece and was fitted originally for a Silvers recoil pad (Hawkins reproduction pad currently). Walnut checkered beavertail forearm with latch release. Circa 1960. Built within the first decade of Holland's new higher quality boxlock. A light and lively pair of sporting game guns by London Best Holland & Holland with 26" blacked steel barrels. Barrels have 3" chambers, ejectors, elegant and slender concave game rib and round steel front bead sight. On both guns the top right barrel reads "HOLLAND & HOLLAND". On both guns top left barrel reads "13, BRUTON STREET, LONDON". The ribs on both guns are numbered "1" and "2" with gold inlay near breech. Both sets of barrels are choked Full and Improved Cylinder. Nice English walnut stocks with straight grain and a bit of fiddleback have English straight hand diamond grips, drop points, good checkering, ovals for initials, and checkered butts. Matching splinter forends with Anson styled releases and fine checkering. Strong case colored scalloped boxlock actions with well-executed English scroll and "Holland & Holland" in bar. Action bottom and hardware are blacked and engraved with fine English scroll. Actions are built with traditional double triggers, gold inlaid numbered ("1" and "2") on top levers, auto safes (SAFE) in gold and with blacked long bottom straps. Both guns come in a double canvas and leather luggage case with snap caps and cleaning tools. CONDITION: GOOD. (A/1) 95% black with marginal handling marks and a bit of color fading at the muzzles. (A/1) Stock with long thin crack on left side of stock running from just behind the midpoint of the scalloped action carrying slightly upwards above the drop point and carrying back to the top end of the checkering on the grip along with some minor handling marks. A vintage pair of pigeon guns with 30" chopper lump barrels with steel bead front sight on a tapered file cut concave game rib, stippled at breech with a gold inlaid "1" and "2", respectively. Right barrels reads "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" and left barrels reads "98. NEW BOND STREET, LONDON". Barrels were sleeved and reproofed in 1975 and 1981, respectively, with Birmingham proofs for 12 bore 2 - 3/4" chambered, choke barrels, old London proofs visible but serrated out. Flashes of original proofs visible on underside of barrels but soft. Sidelock ejector actions with hidden third fasteners (Treble Grip), Holland and Holland patent self-opening system. Action flats with serial number, London and Birmingham proof marks, and Holland and Holland patent date for Royal self-opening system. Well executed flowing acanthus engraving, gun (A) with numerous pigeons throughout while gun (B) has numerous mallards, Holland & Holland in a ribbon on both lockplates. Gold line cocking indicators. Holland and Holland patent hand detachment lever. Non-auto safes. Trigger guards with rolled right edges and single mechanical triggers. Classic drop points behind lockplates. Smokey figured English walnut stocks with straight hand grips checkered in point pattern. Later stock ovals at toe line, just behind checkering. Leather covered recoil pads. Splinter forends with Anson push button style release, checkered in point pattern, release engraved in flowing florals with gold inlaid "1" and "2". Housed in a Holland and Holland double oak and leather luggage case with brass corners, "JG" stamped on lid. Accessories comprise of 2 pairs of nickel plated snap caps, cleaning rod, brush, and a round nickel oil bottle. CONDITION: Good. Barrels, reblacked at time of sleeving. Gun (A) has a few spots of golden staining from dried oil. A few handling marks on barrel including contact from forend, still retaining 95% black. Stocks on (A) have been refinished and top tang is slightly proud to wood with breech pin no longer true. Some handling marks on stock. Bores are very good with some minute freckling towards muzzle. Barrel set (B) with 95% blackening, reblacked at time of sleeving. Forend with handling marks. Buttstock with handling marks and one long scratch on right side of butt. Ribs read "J.PURDEY & SONS. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET.LONDON." "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL". Barrel flats stamped Nitro Proof. 2 - 1/2" (for chamber length) and 1 - 1/8 (for load). Bottom of barrels are both stamped "SS" (Stan Simons), serial numbers and tube numbers (A/1) 58664/58665 (B/2) 58666/58667. Chokes are (A/1) Improved Modified and Improved Cylinder. (B/2) Improved Modified and Improved Cylinder. The shiny blacked trigger guards have serial number on long tang. Attractive, marbled/smoky flame figured European walnut cast off stocks with finely checkered English straight grips. Buttstock measures 15” over checkered wood butt. Barrels made of "Winchester Proof Steel" with ventilated rib marked "Custom Built by Winchester" with red bead front sight and ejectors. Left barrel marked "Model 21 Winchester Trademark-20 gauge 2 -3/4" with scroll engraved pyramid at bores. Second set of barrels marked "2" on forearm lug with forearm marked "2" made from Winchester Proof Steel and marked same with same dimensions as first set of barrels except in 28 gauge. Blued frame with No. 6 engraving pattern with gold dog on each side and two birds on bottom with dog's head on trigger bow. Gun has gold plated single selective trigger and automatic safety. Bottoms of tubes marked "WS1" and "WS2". Beavertail forend with roll type opener is checkered in Skeet Grade pattern. Blued, unengraved action marked on bottom of trigger plate "TOURNAMENT SKEET". Straight grip buttstock with checkered side panels, checkered in three-point pattern through the wrist and terminates with an older hardening Winchester brand red pad. CONDITION: Excellent, as likely factory restore. Barrels retain 98% of an older restored finish with just beginning toning. Receiver retains nearly all of its factory-quality restored blue with proper color and toning. Stocks are sound and excellent and retain nearly all of an older restored finish. Mechanics are very good, though there is a tiny bit of looseness in the hinge. Bores are bright and shiny. No. 2 case hardened frame with typical Dog and Bird DH Grade engraving, non-automatic safety, and added Miller single selective trigger. Walnut checkered pistol grip stock with Parker grip cap and reproduction Parker "Widow's Peak" buttplate. Walnut checkered splinter type forearm with latch release. CONDITION: 90% of a total refinish remaining. Barrels have been replaced with aftermarket barrels and have most likely been shortened with flats marked "Full and Mod" and gauge indicating "Skeet and Skeet". Barrels have two small repaired dents on top of barrels not noticeable on the inside. Gun has carry wear and some usage marks. Gun locks up but has worn hinge when open. Ejectors and trigger functions fine. Bores are bright and shiny. Screws have been turned. Gun has excellent dimensions and would be a great field gun.
