(A) 1771 DATED NEW ENGLAND FLINTLOCK FOWLER ATTRIBUTED TO JOHNSON.

Lot # 1112 (Sale Order: 111 of 460)

For a signed example with nearly identical form and furniture, see plate NE 8 on page 40 of "Flintlock Fowlers: The First Guns Made in America" by Tom Grinslade. The example shown in the book has identical buttstock form to this example. It also has a sideplate and trigger guard of very similar form. According to Grinslade, Seth Johnson lived in Old Rutland, Massachusetts and was a Committee of Safety maker between 1772 and 1777. The iron barrel has thick walls and is round and tapered with a tapered relief flat panel along the top. A small brass bead is mounted on top, near the muzzle, along with evidence of an earlier sight slightly farther back. The barrel tang also has an integral raised notched rear sight. The lockplate has a rounded face and is unmarked. The furniture is brass and the flat sideplate has some simple decoration engraved around both lock screws. Most importantly, the oval-shaped convex silver wrist escutcheon is inscribed "1771" above a later inscribed date of "1807", probably added at the time of the owner's death or by a later family member at the time that they took possession. The brass trigger guard is crudely engraved with borders and simple designs. Sheet brass ramrod ferrules. Full length cherry stock in the classic New England form, showing French influence and a Roman nose buttstock. Complete with a later associated ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina. Lock is a reconversion and retains a brown surface, does not hold on cock. Brass shows some wear and marks from use, retaining a mustard patina. Trigger guard has a period repair to back tang. Stock has a later coat of finish and shows some repaired breaks and cracks to forend and a couple minor pieces replaced around lockplate. A very nice dated New England fowler with excellent architecture. (A) RARE RUSSIAN CRIMEAN WAR CAPTURED MODEL 1828 FLINTLOCK MUSKET, DATED 1836

Lot # 1113 (Sale Order: 112 of 460)

Typical Model 1828 Russian musket, with 1836 dated lock made at Tula. Matching 1836 dates on lock, barrel, side plate, front band, middle band, trigger guard and trigger guard tang. The rear band has an 1827 date on it. Very worn but still present Russian double eagle on the top of the buttplate. Remnants of the stock cartouche are visible on the right side of the butt. Proper cheek rest on left side of butt. This gun appears to be in original flint, although the touch hole is drilled fairly high up on the barrel. Many flintlock guns were issued by the Russians during the Crimean War, and this gun is no exception. Clearly stamped into the trigger guard bow "FROM/ INKERMAN. BY J. DE.V./ NOVR.5TH 1854". The Battle of Inkerman in Russia took place on that date between the Allied forces of Britain, France, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire and the Russian 10th Division led by Lt. General F. I. Soymonov. Despite being heavily outnumbered by the attacking Russian force, the allies were able to hold their position, partially due to the obsolete smoothbore flintlock weapons issued to the Russian troops, while the English troops were armed with the newly designed model 1853 Percussion rifled muskets. Heavy fog during the battle resulted in battalion-sized groups or less from both sides being cut off from their main forces, causing it to be referred to as "The Soldier's Battle". This gun is accompanied by an old leather sling. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing patina overall. Markings are worn in areas but mostly legible and clear. Some light pitting here and there. Brass has a pleasing dark color to it. Wood has dings and handling marks, a few old cracks in the forend that appear solid, as well as a crack in the left side just ahead of the front lock screw from having been overtightened at some point in the past. Fine mechanical function. Sling is solid with flaking. Ramrod appears to be too short for the gun but is certainly old. All in all a very difficult to find gun in its own right, with Crimean War history. Barrel Length: 41 - 3/8" Caliber/Bore: .72 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Russian Model: 1828 Paperwork: Wikipedia Print Out Battle of Inkerman Serial Number: 2850

CORRECTION: Please note, that as a captured weapon, it was clearly a souvenir picked up from the battlefield, likely by J. De. V., which may refer to one of the many de Vere's present at the battle.

(A) HENRY KOONS KENTUCKY RIFLE WITH KINDIG PROVENANCE.

Lot # 1117 (Sale Order: 116 of 460)

Beautiful "Golden Age" Kentucky rifle built by Henry Koons of Big Pipe Creek, Frederick County, Maryland, just south of Adams County Pennsylvania. Little is known of Koons except that he was an exceptional gunsmith building fine carved flintlock rifles. This particular rifle was once in the famed Joe Kindig collection and is pictured in his book "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" and is "No. 200" on page 435. Gun has full octagon smoothbore barrel with blade front sight and rear notched sight with "H Koons" written in script on a brass plate on top facet of barrel. Flint lock with waterproof pan controlled by double set triggers. Full curly maple stock with raised carving and brass furniture. Carving consists of a beautiful raised carved floral design with round checkered oval behind and below cheekpiece. Raised "shell" pattern carving around tang with "Beavertail" pattern behind lock and sidplate flowing into moulding lines around lock. Raised "Fleur de Lis" pattern behind tailpipe flowing into the dished forestock moulding. Kindig states that one of the sideplates has been replaced on the patchbox, which is difficult to tell except for the use of different nails in the top sideplate. 4 piece patchbox with typical "Horsehead Finial", 3 piercings and "pin wheel" engraved sideplates. Push button release on top sideplate. Gun has 2 coin silver inlays with an oval cheekpiece engraved with a "Hunter's Star" and a oval thumbpiece. Barrel is held with 4 brass flat keyes (2 missing). Comes with hardwood ramrod. PROVENANCE: Ex- Kindig Collection and Ex-Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: Gun has an untouched look with wood surfaces having a dry appearance. Lock looks to be period, but wood around lock has burnout which could indicate this gun was at one point converted to percussion and then back to flint. Top sideplate and toe plate have raised due to possible hot and cold storage situations. Front forestock has a break 6" from muzzle which looks to have been there for many years (should be stabilized). Dark bore with good mechanics. A fine example of Koons's work. (A) SHOCKINGLY RARE SWINBURN & SON OVER/UNDER PISTOL MADE FOR JOHN JACOBS, OF JACOB'S RIFLE FAME, ON

Lot # 1123 (Sale Order: 122 of 460)

Swinburn & Son is recorded as working in Birmingham circa 1851-1883 and was heavily involved with the manufacture of the Jacob's Rifle that brought John Jacob much of his fame. Jacob is also noted as an officer of the East India Company who spent much of his time in India before founding the town of Jacobabad, where he ultimately perished and his mausoleum can still be visited. Blade front sight, rear sight with 1 standing sight and 1 folding leaf. Top strap with old partially legible legend that proclaims manufacture by C.P. Swinburn and Sons under Jacob's pistol patent reading "GENERAL [JOHN] JACOB'S PATTERN RIFLED PISTOL / MANUFACTURED BY C P SWINBURN & SON BIRMINGHAM". Left side of barrels with partially obscured Birmingham proofs and a pair of "30" for bore size. Captured swivel ramrod with trumpet head and floral engraved rammer, deeply inset for use with Jacob's pointed bullets. Back action locks engraved with scroll and grape leaves, breech borders engraved en suite. English push on safeties. Hammers of two different sizes with flat backs to strike two different nipples; hammers engraved with acanthus. Trigger guard with full-length tang engraved en suite. Spine tang with further grape bunches engraving and a serial number, 1012, partially obscured. 1 piece walnut grips with half length checkering, left side inlaid with a silver plaque in a vacant escutcheon depicting a coat of arms and motto "Non Nobis Solum" (Trans: Not For Ourselves Alone), the arms of John Jacob. Buttcap with trap for caps. CONDITION: Good for age. Metal essentially a smooth mix of darkness and gunmetal grey, with several areas of obfuscation as mentioned above. Left hammer replaced. Grips are attractive and full sized, with sharp checkering, and numerous bumps and bruises throughout acquired over time. Silver plaque is legible under magnification. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand with exception given to safeties which are frozen, bores with smooth oxidation throughout. Given the caliber of the bore, the Birmingham stamps for 30 bore, and accompanying letters, the bores have been considerably opened up and obliterated what would have been original Jacob's rifling for use with Jacob's proprietary ammo. Accompanied by a number of letters from Graeme Rimer and Paul Wilcock identifying this pistol and authenticating it when it visited England in the late '80s. A very finite number of arms have been attributed to Jacob, and even fewer have an identified pair in a respected arms institution. EW Barrel Length: 6 - 1/4" Caliber/Bore: .62 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: C.P. Swinburn Model: Percussion Paperwork: Letters from Rimer & Wilcock Serial Number: 1012

CORRECTION: Please note that this wonderful pistol not only has its mate in the Royal Armouries, but when the set was separated off the coast of India, a case was also lost.
