It is estimated that less than 1000 of these were made between 1866-1879. This is the iron mounted .36 caliber version with the full octagon barrel, extra length loading lever, percussion, scroll type iron trigger guard with spur, walnut stock with rifle butt plate. Top of barrel has the correct Remington legend. Matching serial number on frame and barrel. CONDITION: Good. No original finish, now a deep dark salt and pepper texture patina. Stock is solid with scattered dings and impressions. Action is fully functional . Barrel has been shortened to 22 1/2". The rear sight is a replacement. The rifling is well defined. (A) CS RICHMOND ARMORY TYPE I PERCUSSION RIFLED MUSKET.

Lot # 2229 (Sale Order: 227 of 661)      

Manufactured in 1861 for Confederate use by the Richmond Armory using machinery and parts captured at Harper's Ferry. Early type 1 high hump lock is dated 1861 behind hammer and correctly marked "RICHMOND, VA." Inside of lock is unmarked. The barrel is dated 1859 near breech with VP Eagle proof mark, 3 leaf flip up rear sight, small front sight with square base, and 3 groove rifling, making it a US M1855 barrel, likely captured with the machinery and assembled with the rest of the gun. The stock is similar to the barrel as it is also a US M1855 stock cut for use with a Maynard tape primer. Stock furniture includes iron nosecap, barrel bands, and brass buttplate. Accompanied by a linen sling. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a speckled gray patina with heavy handling marks near muzzle. Barrel has remnants of Armory Bright polish underneath barrel bands. Stock has been lightly sanded and has handling marks throughout. Mechanically fine. Bore has well defined rifling. Originally manufactured at the Virginia Manufactory in 1814 for state use pursuant to the Militia Act of 1808, and then subsequently altered for Confederate use with a cone in barrel conversion in approximately 1861 by A.B. Barrett of Wytheville, Virginia. A very similar example is on page 92 of "Confederate Rifles & Muskets" by Murphy and Madaus. Lock is marked "Virginia / Manufactory" in front of hammer and "Richmond / 1814" behind hammer. Left side of barrel is marked with crude "P" proofmark often seen on similar muskets. Matching assembly numbers "22" observed on lock retaining plate, trigger guard, rear sling swivel, and rear and middle barrel bands. Lock mortise is numbered "39" when viewed upside down. Inside of trigger guard is numbered "33". Hammer is hand forged. Inside of lock is marked with "AD" inspector marking and cryptic sub-inspector circles on all major parts. Mainspring is marked with Roman Numerals. Left side of stock is marked "BM". CONDITION: Good, with all iron assemblies turned a freckled brown patina. Liewerth is not recorded in Stockel, but Baden was a town in South Germany, and the configuration of these guns is circa the middle of the 19th century. Octagonal Skelp Damascus barrels with hooked breeches signed "Liewerth" on top flat, heavily swamped at the muzzle, with a bead front sight and notch rear sights. Locks engraved "In Baden" with slight scrollwork, dolphin form hammer en suite, side screw through an escutcheon with what appear to be geese. Set triggers protected by a trigger guard with spur, engraved with a panoply of arms and a stylized pineapple finial. Grips checkered in two panels of point pattern checkering, buttcap fluted and finished by an octagonal steel cap. CONDITION: Barrels essentially gunmetal grey with traces of bluing, Damascus clearly defined. Trigger guard and escutcheon the majority of newer bluing, with traces of fire bluing on triggers. Stocks good with handling marks and impressions throughout, but no cracks or chips. Mechanically fine, including set triggers, bores are bright and largely clean with some soft frosting. Originally, Maynard carbines and rifles were fitted with both cap locks and Maynard tape priming systems; the 2nd model guns were simplified in 1863, utilizing only a cap lock for ignition. This early example is fitted with a standard length 26" rust blued octagon to round barrel with dovetail blade front sight and 3-leaf rear, tang is mounted with an additional folding mid range sight more common on 1st model rifles. The case hardened action is stamped on the left with patent information on the left and manufacturer information on the right. Stocked in gloss finished select grain walnut with a steel butt plate. CONDITION: Excellent for its age. Barrel retains nearly all of its original blue with some mild high edge silvering and other scattered marks. Action displays strong and bright case colors, some areas beginning to fade, especially on the lever. Stock rates very good, some scattered impressions present. Very fine and bright bore with some light cleaned abrasions. Fine mechanics. An excellent example of a Civil War era Maynard. Breech is also marked in the same manner as the lock. Walnut stock with checkered grip and German silver mountings. Manufactured circa 1850-1870 and marked "R. Beauvais" on top barrel flat. R. Beauvais is listed as a St. Louis-based gunsmith who mainly made half stock percussion rifles. He is listed in operation in St. Louis from 1858-1875. The entry in Gluckmann and Satterlee's "American Gunmakers" also alleges that Beauvais supplied the Confederate members of "Order of American Knights" or "Knights of the Golden Circle" with arms. Sights are a dovetailed German silver blade front and a tang notch rear sight. Fully octagonal barrel. Stock is walnut with checkered grip, Schnabel forearm, Geramn silver forearm tip, and German silver mountings. Back action lock and mountings feature floral engraving. Serial numbered 11 on end of trigger guard near butt. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a brown patina. Stock is very good with minor age related handling marks but no major signs of distress. Mountings retain a pleasing mellow patina. Action is soft on half cock, but will hold on full cock. This rare rifle has a full octagon barrel with no visible markings or rifling. Notched iron rear sight and brass front blade sight. The converted lockplate is stamped "1817" at the tail and "RICHMOND / VIRGINIA" in the center. The rifle was converted using a dolphin-head hammer and drum bolster. Standard brass Second Model patchbox and furniture. Plain walnut stock. Ramrod appears to be its original. CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown surface with pitting throughout, heavier at breech. Lock retains a light brown patina with scattered light pitting, markings very good. Lock spring does not function. Brass retains a mustard patina. Stock as found and untouched with scattered cracks, minor losses and out stains. Some wood loss above lockplate behind breech. A very scarce rifle that a Confederate likely used during the Ciivl War. Sharps manufactured just 384 Model 1878 carbines between 1878 and 1880, many of which were sent West. This example appears to have been professionally cut back from 24" to 22" with script "Old Reliable" trademark and Bridgeport address. Blade front sight and tang mounted peer sight, the original carbine rear sight removed. Rust blued receiver with saddle ring and stud removed. Maker information present on the left side. Falling block and lever are case hardened. Business rifle style Schnabel forend and plain walnut stock with checkered steel shotgun butt plate. Forend could not be removed to check for matching numbers. CONDITION: Near excellent. Barrel retains nearly all of its factory rust blue with some scattered marks. Receiver has some saddle ring wear and cleaned oxidation spots on the left. Significant portions of strong case colors are retained on the lever and falling block, areas fading to a mottled brown patina. Significant amounts of nitre blue are also retained on screw heads. Wood is nice as cleaned with scattered marks, a small split on the right side of the forend, and an area of deeper abrasion on the right side of the butt. Very fine and bright bore with crisp rifling. Fine mechanics. A very interesting and rare Sharps carbine. Manufactured in 1860 prior to the opening shots of the Civil War. Fitted with a desirable 6" octagon barrel with 2-line New York address and brass pin front sight. Cylinder rolled with the stagecoach holdup scene. Silver plated grip straps with varnished 1-piece walnut grips. Backstrap is faintly inscribed in a non professional hand "Capt S J Johnson 17 NCT", an additional "S. J. Johnson" on the butt. A small card accompanying this lot indicates that it was purchased in 1982 in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1982 from the family of Captain Samuel J. Johnson. No exact matches were found in the 17th North Carolina Infantry records. Lot includes research for a Lieutenant Samuel B. Johnston (also spelled Johnson), who served as Sergeant of Company H and was appointed to 1st Lieutenant in 1862. A Captain Stuart L. Johnston is also listed in the rolls of the 17th NC. The 17th North Carolina served at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fort Fisher, and Bentonville. An early tooled leather flap holster also accompanies this lot. CONDITION: Good. Barrel blue has drifted to a worn brown patina with some oxidization spots. Frame and cylinder have faded to a mottled gray. Partially legible cylinder scene. Significant portions of the silver plating are retained on the front strap and trigger guard. Backstrap has been heavily cleaned, the engraving still somewhat legible but very soft. Grips have some scattered handling marks and areas of finish loss. Strong, abraded bore. Mechanics do not function reliably and have some period repairs. A few screws also appear to be replacements. Matching numbers observed throughout. Holster has some surface crackling and wear but remains supple. Manufactured in 1860 prior to the opening shots of the Civil War. Fitted with a desirable 6" octagon barrel with 2-line New York address and brass pin front sight. Cylind...moreer rolled with the stagecoach holdup scene. Silver plated grip straps with varnished 1-piece walnut grips. Backstrap is faintly inscribed in a non professional hand "Capt S J Johnson 17 NCT", an additional "S. J. Johnson" on the butt. A small card accompanying this lot indicates that it was purchased in 1982 in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1982 from the family of Captain Samuel J. Johnson. No exact matches were found in the 17th North Carolina Infantry records. Lot includes research for a Lieutenant Samuel B. Johnston (also spelled Johnson), who served as Sergeant of Company H and was appointed to 1st Lieutenant in 1862. A Captain Stuart L. Johnston is also listed in the rolls of the 17th NC. The 17th North Carolina served at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fort Fisher, and Bentonville. An early tooled leather flap holster also accompanies this lot. CONDITION: Good. Barrel blue has drifted to a worn brown patina with some oxidization spots. Frame and cylinder have faded to a mottled gray. Partially legible cylinder scene. Significant portions of the silver plating are retained on the front strap and trigger guard. Backstrap has been heavily cleaned, the engraving still somewhat legible but very soft. Grips have some scattered handling marks and areas of finish loss. Strong, abraded bore. Mechanics do not function reliably and have some period repairs. A few screws also appear to be replacements. Matching numbers observed throughout. Holster has some surface crackling and wear but remains supple. (A) SAVAGE 1861 NAVY REVOLVER IN .36 CALIBER

Approximately 20,000 Navy size revolvers were made in Middletown CT from 1861-65. Of those, 11,984 were made under US contracts but most were not US surcharged as is this example. It is referred to as the Navy Model due to the .36 caliber. This revolver features the octagon barrel with Savage legend stamped on top strap. It is a six shot, single action in which the ring trigger engages the cylinder to cock and the single trigger fires the weapon. Finish was blue with two piece walnut grips. CONDITION: Very good, all smooth homogenous patina. All legends are legible. Grips are very good with some finish loss and marring. Action works correctly. Bore is sharp with some residue. (A) CIVIL WAR PERIOD COLT 1860 ARMY SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Per the included factory letter, this revolver shipped as a classic .44 caliber with 8" barrel, blue and brass finish, and wood stocks, shipped to Emerson Gaylord, Springfield, Massachusetts, on July 8th 1862, in a shipment of 590; presumably, this was the noted retailer who operated out of Massachusetts. Classic configuration. Barrel assembly is unnumbered, with an "M" inspection above wedge, and the rear of the bolster is shaved, indicating replacement; wedge also a replacement. "S" stamped behind trigger guard, "0" ahead of guard. Matching numbers observed on cylinder axle, frame, and trigger guard; butt appears to match but is very soft. 4 screw frame cut for a stock, with matching cut at heel of butt. CONDITION: Refinished over fine pitting throughout, essentially an even homogeneous mix of dove grey, soft bluing, and chocolate patina. Handling marks and age related marks throughout. Stocks with splice repairs on both sides. Mechanically fine, excepting that there are only 2 hammer clicks, bore with strong rifling and light frosting and oxidation.
