(A) CIVIL WAR NAVY INSCRIBED SMITH & WESSON MODEL 2 ARMY REVOLVER OF LIEUTENANT JOHN HUMPHRY.

Lot # 2255 (Sale Order: 253 of 661)

Per an included factory letter, this revolver with early 3-digit "296" serial number shipped August 27, 1861, to J.W. Storrs of New York City. Classic early configuration with ribbed 5" octagon barrel, German silver blade front sight, 5-shot cylinder, stop retained by only 2 pins, spur trigger, and 2-piece varnished rosewood grips. Backstrap period inscribed "ACT. LIEUT. JOHN HUMPHREY, COM'DO / C.S.N. 1861". Although research could not locate a Lieutenant John Humphrey in Confederate Naval Service, a Lieutenant Joshua Humphrey is listed as commanding the gunboat CSS Stevens, which was scuttled in New Iberia. It is also possible the inscription on this revolver, now somewhat worn, originally read "U.S.N." A volunteer Acting Lieutenant John Humphrey commanded the USS Young Rover in 1861, a steam powered bark. After some complaint about the newly fitted ship's boiler and armament, Humphrey initially set sail for the York River at Hampton Roads, Virginia, as part of the Atlantic Blockade Squadron in September 1861. In 1862, the USS Young Rover briefly served with the Potomac River Flotilla before reassignment to Florida as part of the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. A file of research about both Lieutenant Joshua Humphrey and Acting Lieutenant John Humphrey accompanies this lot, along with a LOA for the engraving. CONDITION: Very good. Revolver displays a silvery patina with some light cleaned oxidation throughout. Grips have some mild finish loss and scattered impressions, the right grip stamped in the inside with the full serial number. Bore is strong with some black powder abrasion. Crisp mechanics. Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: .32 Long RF FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: Model 2 Army Paperwork: Factory Letter, Research, Previous Listing Serial Number: 296

(C) FINE PHILIPPINE COLT MODEL 1878/1902 DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 2269 (Sale Order: 267 of 661)

Frame was manufactured in 1900 and the 1902 date is not stamped on right side making this one of the earliest known examples of this model. Adopted by the Government due to the inadequate performance of the then-in-use .38 revolvers. The large trigger guard and extra long trigger was devised as a solution for the heavy double action trigger pull and the smaller stature of the Philippine soldiers. Rinaldo Carr (RAC) was the chief sub inspector of all these revolvers. You will find his stamp on the left side of frame near grip, on the back of cylinder, and the trigger guard. Right side of frame has the inspector stamp "OCH" for Odus C. Horney who worked at Springfield from 1898-1902. The are a proof "P" and "K" stamps under the barrel. Matching serial number on butt, cylinder, and loading gate. Gutta percha Colt grips are not numbered. Features standard blue finish with fire blue screws and sports a factory lanyard loop. The top of the barrel wears the single line Colt address. The side of the barrel is stamped 45 Colt. Left side of frame has the Colt pony in a circle. This revolver comes with a standard Colt SAA / Schofield holster that was altered during its period of use with an access cut to allow fitting the large guard. CONDITION: Excellent. The frame retains about 75% blue with some age spots. The barrel retains approximately the same coverage with age spotting and some blended patina. The housing has blue in top protected area. The straps retain some bright blue blending patina. The cylinder shows some generous blue in flutes with the balance patina. The screws are true and retain the majority of fire blue, as does the top and back of the hammer. The grips are excellent and crisp. Action working but heavy pull. Bore is bright with minor residue. Holster is stamped US and exhibits some cracking but solid. Accessories: Holster Barrel Length: 6" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1878 DA Serial Number: 43471
