SHIP LOG FOR THE BRIG REBECCA & SALLY CIRCA 1820-1830.

Lot # 2056 (Sale Order: 55 of 661)

A large ship log measuring 21" x 14" with bound canvas covers that contains entries for the Brig Rebecca & Sally. The log contains entries that date from the 1820s-1830 and are mostly entered by the ship's captains Samuel Groves, James Houston, and William Page. Many of the entries logged include travel to and from New York, which appears to be where the vessel was harbored. Most entries include information regarding positioning, the weather, type of cargo, and various events that occurred on a day to day basis, as the ship Rebecca & Sally appears to have been a trading vessel that traversed several areas but mostly frequented the Caribbean and surrounding areas. There are interesting entries from Charleston to Marseille in which Cape Trafalgar and Gibraltar are mentioned. Some pages contain longer entries than others. The log remains intact with a few pages in the front that have been torn. There is also evidence of several pages that were torn out throughout its length. Most writing remains legible with some stains and scattered blemishes that are typical of old paper and to be expected from a book that traveled the world via ship. CONDITION: Good.

AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF PIECES TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL ALLEMAN, THE MILITARY GOVERNOR OF GETTYSBURG

Lot # 2058 (Sale Order: 57 of 661)

A fantastic fresh to the market archive of Colonel Hiram Clay Alleman who served 3 terms of service during the Civil War. The lot consists of his stunning presentation grade sword that features a double etched blade with beautifully frosted patriotic and foliate motifs on each side. The obverse features a panel that is etched "Lt. Col. H.C. Alleman" with reverse featuring a federal eagle perched on a shield in the foreground of a spread of American flags. Blade is etched with the retailer "G.W. Simons / & Bro: / Manfr's / Philada, Pa." on the obverse ricasso. This sword was assembled by Philadelphia jeweler George W. Simon who is listed as “Geo. W. Simon & Bro.” during the Civil War, and was a jeweler and sword mounter with business located on Sansom Street in Philadelphia. Simon assembled swords using both imported and domestic blades with his company name etched on the ricasso. The panel on the reverse ricasso is etched in a checker pattern with the words "UNION FOR EVER" with stars and stripes. A faint patina has set in on the blade with scattered blemishes that are most evident after the etched panels. There are small areas of rust on either side of the ricasso. The rest of the blade shines and the etched panels remain undisturbed with distinct definition to the embellishments. The hilt is as breathtaking as the blade and features a beautifully gilded eagle between the letters "US" with open scrollwork, followed by an eagle head quillon with gemstone eyes. Grip is of silver with thick scroll decorations and Columbia with sword and patriotic shield. The pommel features gilded foliage that leads to a spread winged eagle. The hilt exhibits generous traces of original gilding with a light patina that has begun to set in. There are a few areas of loss, particularly by the claws of the eagle, but the overall appearance is not affected by these aged areas. The sword is complete with its scabbard which, like the ricasso, features excellent amounts of its original gilding. The presentation is located between the mounts and reads "Presented to Lt. Col. H.C. Alleman / BY / Non Com Officers and Privates, / OF THE 127th Regt P.V. / As a Token of Esteem". The presentation is contained in a thick braided frame and is surrounded by the beautifully cast and chased mounts each of which boast their own decorations. The upper mount features an "A" contained in a frame with elegant leafy borders. The A is highlighted by pearl decoration. The middle mount features arms and armor and each mount exhibits a thickly braided carry ring. The drag features beautiful scrollwork that compliments the rest of the scabbard. The upper mount's decoration has separated at some point and is secured by string The scabbard exhibits areas of gilt loss but presents excellently and remains dignified. The sword is contained in its original leather wrapped and blue velvet lined presentation grade case. The group also includes Alleman's field used Staff and Field Officer's sword. The sword features a double etched blade embellished with foliate and patriotic motifs. Ricasso is marked "P.D.L.". A mellow patina has set in on the blade but the decorations remain defined. Hilt features a guard with open scrollwork that surrounds the letters "US" with oxidation noticed throughout the motifs. Shagreen wrapped wood grip that is grooved to accommodate twisted brass wire. Grip exhibits oxidation but wrap remains tight with slightly loose wire. The sword is complete with its metal scabbard that exhibits a pleasing finish with patina. Mounts are mostly plain and remain secured to the scabbard body. Drag with scattered small dents. There is also a NCO sword that is marked by Ames enclosed within an unraveled scroll and "U.S. / J.M. / 1862". The blade is bright with scattered blemishes. Hilt with mellow patina. Complete with its leather scabbard that features 1 break that is repaired by tape and the drag is separated. There is also large 28" x 18" silver serving tray that is embellished with ornate scrollwork that surrounds a presentation to Col. and Mrs. Alleman that was presented as a gift of congratulations for their marriage in 1889. The tray exhibits a pleasing patina with embellishments that remain visible. Lastly, there is a oil on canvas painting of the Colonel in his uniform. The painting measures 28" x 33" and is mounted on a gilded wood frame. The colors remain vibrant with a 1" tear on Alleman's beard. Hiram Clay Alleman was born in 1831 and was a 30-year-old attorney residing in Harrisburg, PA when he enlisted as a Captain on 8/5/62 at Harrisburg, PA. On 8/9/62 he was commissioned into Co. D, 127th Pennsylvania and was promoted to Lt. Colonel on 8/16/62. He commanded the 127th at Fredericksburg where he was wounded in the leg by a shell fragment and at Chancellorsville where he was struck in the ribs by a shell fragment, falling from his horse. He was mustered out of service along with the regiment on 5/29/63. In June 1863 upon Lee’s advance toward

IDENTIFIED EARLY CIVIL WAR SUMMER HAVELOCK.

Lot # 2065 (Sale Order: 63 of 661)

Exceedingly rare, white cotton duck forage cap and Havelock. Discarded and cursed as making the neck too hot or not allowing air to circulate, these British designed neck protectors were only seen briefly at the start of the War in 1861 and then rarely seen again. Most commonly associated with the Battle of Bull Run, they are an early war item that is missing from most collections. This example is named in period ink on the crown, "Joseph L. Bonn / 13th N.Y. Inf." The 13th, the "Rochester regiment," composed of eight companies from Rochester, one from Dansville and one from Brockport, was mustered into the U. S. service at Elmira for a term of three months. It left Elmira on May 29, 1861, for Washington with the 12th, and camped on Meridian Hill until June 3, when it was ordered to Fort Corcoran, where it was employed in construction work until the opening of the Manassas movement. It then became a part of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, Army of Northeastern Virginia; was engaged at Blackburn's ford, and was active at Bull Run, where they lost 58 members. The regiment's service record supports the ID as his unit was where many of these originated from New York units and where they have documented use. The top is ventilated with a hole sewn into the top of the crown and a button used as the vent. The underside of the button is an oilcloth reinforcing patch. Most likely used once and then store away, this is a museum quality example of this scarce headgear. CONDITION: Excellent with only the slightest age discoloration. From a smoke free home.
Exceedingly rare, white cotton duck forage cap and Havelock. Discarded and cursed as making the neck too hot or not allowing air to circulate, these British designed neck...more protectors were only seen briefly at the start of the War in 1861 and then rarely seen again. CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE PIKE HEAD BOWIE KNIFE WITH SCABBARD.

Lot # 2070 (Sale Order: 68 of 661)

Though unmarked, this bayonet blade is an exact match with a specimen featured in the famous Ben Palmer Bowie knife collection bearing the maker-mark “T.A. Potts / New Orleans / 1840”. While the date of manufacture is open to conjecture, it is probable that these bayonets were not government issue but originated with state or militia troops. Although from the Civil War era, its attachment rings are too small to fit the standard .58 caliber Civil War rifle, nor does it come with any locking device. The intended use of this blade is a matter of some speculation, as described on page 66 of Abels' "Classic Bowie Knives" that it was likely intended as a combat knife that could also double as a pike head or bayonet, while Albaugh suggests on page 165 of "Confederate Edged Weapons" that the rings integral to the guard and pommel are too small for a rifle barrel or pike staff. These knives were believed to have been sold by Potts, a military outfitter in New Orleans, and similar examples are known to have been made by Rees Fitzpatrick of Natchez, Mississippi, though some suggest Dufilho as possible manufacturer. The weapon is composed of a large bowie knife with a long clip point blade, fitted with a fine flat-sided wood grip and brass furniture. The guard and pommel are both thick brass. The front ring has a 1 - 1/8" exterior and 13/16" interior diameter, and the rear ring has a 1 - 3/8 inch exterior and a 13/16" inch interior. This example exhibits an older polishing throughout the blade. Pleasing light patina to hilt that also appears to have been cleaned. Grip exhibits nice dark finish. This example is complete with its original leather scabbard that features brass mounts. Scabbard is in rough condition with 1 major break toward the throat, however it remains intact as 1 piece. Throat is missing 1 pin on each side and is slightly loose. Drag exhibits a dent. CONDITION: Good. Blade Length: 12 - 1/4" Overall Length: 17"

LOT OF 2: US CIVIL WAR KNAPSACK AND HAVERSACK.

Lot # 2077 (Sale Order: 75 of 661)

Lot consists of: (A) M1853/55 standard issue enlisted knapsack. (B) Nearly every soldier was issued a haversack to carry his rations and mess gear. This is the standard wartime federal pattern of tarred canvas with a fixed shoulder strap and flap secured by a leather billet and small roller buckle (this example has billet and buckle replaced). Haversacks themselves tend to be scarce. Compared to knapsacks, which survived in large crates in the inventories of military surplus dealers like Bannerman's, haversacks were used hard during the war and were also used up as they were valuable gear in civilian employ. CONDITION: Very good with age commensurate wear.
