EXTREMELY SCARCE 1872 CAVALRY BRACE SYSTEM.

Lot # 2085 (Sale Order: 83 of 661)

In 1872 the Cavalry Board adopted these leather braces to support a troopers extensive load. Reports from the field were universally negative, and these braces saw very use after their adoption. These M1872 Cavalry Braces are extremely scarce, as there were only 2000 made and most did not survive the frontier. The front straps attach to loops on the 1872 Cavalry Belt and there is a clip to accommodate a carbine, as the brace system acted as a carbine sling. This example was former Ed Greene and Scott Meadows. The brace system remains supple with areas of light crazing throughout its construction. Brass components exhibit a pleasing patina. All pieces are properly riveted and there are no major breaks or tears. A fine example of a rare piece of US Cavalry equipment. CONDITION: Good.

M1872 US CAVALRY ANDREW'S PATTERN FOLDING CAMPAIGN HAT.

Lot # 2087 (Sale Order: 85 of 661)

Seldom seen M1872 regulation cavalry folding campaign hat. Often said that this is one of the scarcest pieces of federal regulation headgear, this style hat was worn by both officers and enlisted men during the Great Sioux War of 1876. Historians associate this pattern hat with Custer's troopers during the Battle of Little Bighorn in June 1876. Manufactured by Pettibone under a US Government contract, these have a very limited survival rate due to their limited popularity, fragility of the design, material of the hat, and the harsh conditions in which they were used. CONDITION: Shows commensurate period wear overall with the black grosgrain band around the base of the crown present but has come undone at the front. The four japanned metal hooks are in place, with the thin leather sweatband present but coming unstitched in numerous sections.

1874 PATTERN SWIVEL HOLSTER.

Lot # 2089 (Sale Order: 87 of 661)

Very rare 1874 Pattern Swivel Holster for the Colt Cavalry Single Action or S&W Schofield revolvers. The Pattern 1874 Swivel holster has a distinctive hanger with brass swivel riveted to the holster body. The swivel enables the holster to pivot 45 degrees and accommodate the movement of a cavalryman. The holster is constructed with black bridle leather with a narrow flap that is not embossed with the standard "US" oval. The flap has a single hole and is secured by a brass finial. The loop is affixed to the body by a Hoffman swivel. The back of the hanger is stamped "WATERVLIET / ARSENAL". Field use indicated that the swivel was delicate and easily broken, therefore most of the holsters were modified or replaced. Surviving, un-altered, examples of the 1874 pattern holster are seldom encountered by collectors. The holster remains intact with light crazing throughout and scattered flaked areas. This example is featured on page 95 of US Military Holsters and Related Accoutrements by Edward Scott Meadows. CONDITION: Good.

US CIVIL WAR M1861 FEDERAL ISSUE BLANKET.

Lot # 2090 (Sale Order: 88 of 661)

One of the scarcer textile items of the Civil War is the regulation blanket. Blanket measures approximately 78” x 68” overall with 3 - 1/2” wide stripes and 4 - 3/4” tall letters. Portions of both letter's stitching are worn off. Regardless this is a seldom encountered textile from the Civil War. CONDITION: Fair.

US CIVIL WAR FEDERAL ISSUE GUM RUBBER BLANKET.

Lot # 2091 (Sale Order: 89 of 661)

During the Civil War, one of the most invaluable items a soldier carried on campaigns was the "gum" rubber blanket. The Union purchased or made 1,893,007 of these blankets between 1860-1866 for every soldier. They were among the first items given to a recruit and were treasured by troops who used them as protection against the elements. These blankets measured 70" x 60" and featured brass eyelets on the outer edges. Manufacturers used cotton for the substrate and then coated it with rubber. This example measures approximately 70" x 44" and has been subject to shrinkage. There are several small holes and repairs throughout its construction but it appears that all brass grommets are in place. There are stains throughout with some areas of flaking on the rubber side. This example also features its original inspector stamp that reads "H.S. McCOMS / MILITARY INSPECTOR" in red ink. Consigner states that this blanket was used to wrap a Civil War musket that was purchased at Bannerman's castle in 1959. CONDITION: Fair.

M1852 NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD PRESENTED TO REAR ADMIRAL CHARLES S. BOGGS.

Lot # 2092 (Sale Order: 90 of 661)

A nice example of a post-Civil War M1852 Naval Officer’s sword presented to Rear Admiral Charles Stewart Boggs. The sword is in standard M1852 configuration, decorated for over half its length with etched panels that depict naval and foliate motifs. The blade measures approximately 1” in width with slight curve, meaning the sword dates pre-1870. Blade is marked “Joseph / Starkey / Conduit St / London”. Blade exhibits nice decorations, very clean overall, with scattered blemishes toward the tip and a few nicks along the edge. Hilt with standard serpent quillon and guard with USN banner, pommel with eagle in star vignette. Hilt exhibits a generous amount of gilding. Rayskin grip with strands of twisted brass wire. Compete with black leather scabbard that features brass mounts, also retaining generous amounts of original gilding. Fouled ring mounts with 2 carry rings and serpent drag. Scabbard is marked “Joseph Starkey / 25 Conduit St / London” in decorative shield. Mounts are slightly loose but secured to scabbard body. Silver presentation escutcheon is located between the upper and middle mounts and reads “Rear Admiral, C.S. Boggs / 1886”. Scabbard remains sturdy with a few scattered scuffs and blemishes. Charles Stewart Boggs (1811-1888) was appointed midshipman in the U.S. Navy in 1826; passed midshipman 1832; lieutenant, 1837; commander, 1855; captain, 1862; commodore, 1866; rear admiral, 1870. He served at the Boston Navy Yard; aboard the brig Porpoise; on the USS North Carolina in 1837; and on the steamer Princeton in the Mexican War. In the 1850s he served on the frigate St. Lawrence, commanded 2 mail steamers and was lighthouse inspector in California in 1860-1861. He is best known as commander of the screw gunboat Varuna in the fighting at Forts Jackson and St. Philip in April 1862 in Farragut’s move up the Mississippi against New Orleans. In Farragut’s advance group, the ship, carrying 8 8-inch guns and 2 30-pd. rifles, took part in fighting the CSS Louisiana and the Manassas near Ft. St. Philip, then moved upriver, becoming the lead vessel, engaging a group of Confederate gunboats and pursued by the Louisiana gunboat Governor Moore, the two ships firing into one another sometimes at a range of ten feet in dense smoke. Twice rammed by the Louisiana vessel, Boggs ran his sinking ship aground even while being rammed by yet another Confederate ship, and yet kept his guns firing until the gundeck was swamped and the vessel sank. 8 of his men were awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in the desperate fight, which was celebrated in poem opening, “Who has not heard of the dauntless Varuna? / Who has not heard of the deeds she has done?” Promoted captain in July, he later commanded the steam sloops Juniata and Sacramento, the cruiser Connecticut, and from 1866 to 1868, the gunboat De Soto. He commanded the European fleet 1871, retired 1872, but served on the lighthouse board into 1873. The sword may relate to his trip to Europe in 1886 or a recent article dealing with the fight of the Varuna and Governor Moore, though before leaving on that trip he announced his intention to contradict some aspects of that article. He died in 1888 in his native New Jersey. CONDITION: Very good. Blade Length: 30 - 1/2" Overall Length: 36 - 1/4" Paperwork: Charles Boggs documents

GEORGIA ZOUAVES BADGE OF LIEUTENANT PENN BEDELL, WHO KILLED THE FIRST ATLANTA POLICE OFFICER KILLED

Lot # 2099 (Sale Order: 97 of 661)

An attractive badge named to Penn Bedell, who was a southerner with a colorful history. Bedell enlisted in the Confederate States Army on April 28, 1861, at New Orleans in Nelligan’s 1st Louisiana for 1 year and was 2nd Lt. of Co. D. He resigned in July 1861, but apparently then became 1st Lt. in Company C, serving until March 1862 when he was “dropped,” likely indicating he did not reenlist “for the war” when the army was reorganizing in Spring 1862. During the post-war years, he was a member of the Georgia Zouaves, and an 1874 newspaper article sheds light on this award: "Lieut. Key, of the Jonesboro Zouaves presented Lieut. Bedell of the Georgia Zouaves with a magnificent gold badge, representing the coat of arms of Georgia." The badge is quite attractive and features a ribbon bearing the name "PENN BEDELL" with chain suspension that holds a cross that exhibits the Georgia coat of arms as described by the article, with presentation in each arm of the cross. Bedell has an interesting history, as he was involved in a shootout with an Atlanta policeman, M.W. Rasbury, in which Bedell killed Rasbury; Rasbury was the first Atlanta police officer killed in the line of duty. Since Rasbury shot twice first, Bedell had the charges against him dropped. Bedell was later murdered on February 19, 1874 and was buried in his Zouaves uniform. The badge exhibits a pleasing light patina with no visible gold markings, and is most likely gilded brass. CONDITION: Very good.
