PROTOTYPE FOR THE 1875 HOLSTER WITH ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT TAG.

Lot # 2103 (Sale Order: 101 of 661)

An interesting example of a prototype 1875 pattern swivel holster with Ordnance Department tag. The holster is constructed of bridle black leather and was manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal. The belt loop is marked "WATERVLIET ARSENAL" on the belt loop, which is affixed to the holster by a Hoffman swivel. The holster exhibits a wider body and does not feature the typical US in oval embossing. The Ordnance Department hang tag that allowed positive identification of the pattern holster of 1875 was removed from the holster but is original to the holster. The tag reads "No 3882 EWC / Aug 7 1875 / RECEIVED ORDNANCE OFFICE / Sample Holster / From / Watervliet Arsenal / for either / Colts, Schofield Smith & / Wesson revolvers". Leather body remains sturdy and supple with surface crazing throughout. Securing strap exhibits a repair. Belt loop is properly riveted and the swivel does not function. A nice example of a prototype holster with documentation. This holster is featured on page 97 of US Military Holsters and Related Accoutrements by Edward Scott Meadows. CONDITION: Good. Paperwork: Ordnance Department Tag

1878 PATTERN HOLSTER.

Lot # 2104 (Sale Order: 102 of 661)

The 1878/79 holster was manufactured at the Watervliet Arsenal and links the M1875 swivel holster and the M1881 holster. This example features a large flap with US in oval embossed diagonally instead of horizontally. The holster is complete with all components including the plug, flap, strap, and rivets. Securing strap is stitched and riveted to the flap. Belt loop is intact and riveted to body by 3 rivets. All stitching remains tight and the holster body remains sturdy and supple. Light crazing throughout its length with wear on the securing strap. The remains of the AR Smith inspector stamp is slightly legible on the strap. Originally black, the holster has faded to brown because of the vegetable tanned leather. A very nice example of a rare Indian Wars holster that remains intact. CONDITION: Good.

The 1872 pattern holster is an extensively modified Civil War holster that was altered at the Watervliet Arsenal.
