Explorations in Africa by Livingstone 1st Ed. 1872

Lot # 87 (Sale Order: 82 of 739)

Included in this lot is a copy of “Explorations in Africa” by Dr. David Livingstone and others. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was a Scottish missionary and medical doctor who explored much of the interior of Africa. In a remarkable journey in 1853-56, he became the first European to cross the African continent. Starting on the Zambezi River, he traveled north and west across Angola to reach the Atlantic at Luanda. On his return journey, he followed the Zambezi to its mouth on the Indian Ocean in present-day Mozambique. Livingstone’s most famous expedition was in 1866-73, when he explored central Africa in an attempt to find the source of the Nile. Not heard from for years, he was believed lost. Both the Royal Geographical Society and the sensationalist New York Herald organized expeditions to find him. Henry M. Stanley (1841-1904), a British-born reporter, who was to become a noted explorer in his own right, led the Herald’s expedition. On November 10, 1871, Stanley found Livingstone in the town of Ujiji, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, in present-day Tanzania. News of the discovery caused a worldwide sensation. This book, which appeared in Chicago in 1872, was part of the effort by publishers to capitalize on the demand from the public for information about Livingstone and Stanley and about Africa in general. The book is in good condition, showing some wear on the cover. The book measures 6" x 9" x 1 1/2".

Rare Colt Bisley Flattop .32-20 Target Revolver

Lot # 98 (Sale Order: 93 of 739)

In this lot is a rare Colt Bisley Flattop Target Revolver in .32-20 caliber with Colt Factory historical letter verifying all aspects of this extremely scarce example. Th...moree Colt Bisley revolver was named for the famed Bisley Shooting Range in England. Almost all parts of this model were made with fixed sights and used as working six guns, as were the more common and similar Single Action Army revolver, which was made in the same calibers and manufactured during the same time period. Although made in more limited quantities than the Single Action Army, the standard Bisley Single Action revolver found favor with cowboys, lawmen, and frontiersmen in the western and southwestern United States. The standard, fixed sighted Bisley model was made from 1894-1915 with 44,350 manufactured. However, the Bisley Flattop Target Model saw a limited production for all calibers, totaling only 976 revolvers. Of these 976 Bisleys, only 131 were chambered for the still available .32-20 cartridge. Even if all 131 of these Colts have survived to the present, the .32-20 caliber Bisley Flattop Target revolver would be rarer than the famed Colt Walker or the Colt Paterson models. Considering floods, fires, natural disasters, and guns simply used up, altered, destroyed or lost, the most realistic survival rate for these would probably be more like 50% or approximately 65 individual .32-20 caliber Bisley Flattop revolvers. Even the most advanced Colt and museum collections are missing an example of a Bisley target revolver. This Colt, with serial number 263563, is in fine, unaltered condition. It comes with a Colt factory historical letter, which states that this revolver, with this serial number, is listed in the Colt archives as a Colt Bisley Flattop Target Revolver in .32-20 caliber with 7 ½” barrel, blue finish, type of stocks not listed (this simply means the stocks or grips are the standard hard rubber grips supplied unless specifically ordered otherwise), shipped to J. F. Schmelzer & Sons Arms Company, Kansas City, Missouri on April 29, 1905. J. F. Schmelzer & Sons Arms Company was a large distributor for Colt. Most of their Single Action Army and Bisley revolvers were shipped to western dealers or individuals. Most likely, this revolver was used as a “working gun”, as opposed to a purely target revolver used in matches. As such, it shows honest frontier use, but no abuse. While showing age, all metal surfaces are smooth and show no evidence of rust or pitting. The barrel displays fine blue on the rear 1/3, with the front showing mostly gray from holster wear. The correct one line Colt address on the barrel top is crisp, as is the “(BISLEY MODEL) .32 W.C.F.” stamping on the left side of the barrel (.32 W.C.F. stands for Winchester Center Fire, which is the same as .32-20 or .32-20 Winchester caliber). The front sight is the correct pinned blade/bead target sight (the standard Bisley model had a plain blade front sight) and the non-grooved top strap above the cylinder is the classic “flattop” with correct factory installed dovetailed target rear sight that is adjustable for windage. The cylinder shows nearly all of the now aged blue finish. The frames of target Bisley revolvers were full blued instead of case colored, as on standard models. The frame on this example has aged to an attractive natural plum/brown appearance with fine correct patent date stampings on the left side of the frame below the cylinder. Importantly, the screws are in fine condition, indicating that this revolver was not taken apart or altered internally. The “rampant Colt” embossed checkered hard rubber grips show light wear and are solid. The action is fine and the hammer has the correct 4-clicks when cocked. The bore is dark with good rifling and shows wear commensurate with the overall condition of the piece. There is good aged blue on the grip straps that is now mixing with a pleasing plum patina and shows no evidence of cleaning or scouring. Serial numbers correctly match on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. Overall, this is an incredibly rare Colt with a lovely unaltered and uncleaned appearance suitable for the most advanced Colt or Western artifact collection. It is very seldom encountered and much less offered for sale. Original Colt archival letter included. Serial Number: 263563. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Colt Model 1849 Percussion Cap Pocket Revolver

Lot # 99 (Sale Order: 94 of 739)

Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with 4” octagon barrel and serial number 322187, indicating a scarce Post-Civil War manufacture date of 1870. This is a fine, original exa...moremple .31 caliber, five-shot revolver that found favor with officers and enlisted men as personal weapons during the Indian Wars of the period. Many of these also saw service in the gold fields of California, the settling West, and in about all urban areas during this very turbulent time of Post-Civil War Reconstruction. The 1849 was one of Colt’s most popular designs that was large enough for aimed fire, but small enough to conceal in a waste band or unobtrusive holster. They also found favor with gamblers and “ladies of the evening.” The barrel is correctly marked “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK US AMERICA”, along with “COLT’S PATENT” on the left side of the frame and “31 CAL.” on the side of the trigger guard. The revolver features nice, overall aged patina metal. Fine walnut grips show only normal light wear. This example also shows a mellow, uncleaned brass back strap and trigger guard. This revolver, with very attractive overall appearance, has all sharp markings, matching serial numbers, fine screws, and original loading lever. This is one of the most popular and successful of the Colt percussion revolvers and a key model for any Colt or Old West collection. Serial Number: 322187. This firearm qualifies as an Antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

RARE Winchester 1894 Deluxe Takedown Rifle

Lot # 100 (Sale Order: 95 of 739)

Extremely rare Winchester 1894 deluxe, pistol grip, takedown rifle with scarce caliber and desirable special order features. This most unusual rifle, with serial number 2...more16354, was made in 1904. It is chambered for the seldom seen .25-35 cartridge, which was originally introduced for this model in 1895. It was one of the least produced calibers in the Model 1894 and most in this chambering were 20” carbines, not rifles. Full length rifles with 26” barrels in .25-35 are seldom encountered. The .25-35 caliber was considered a fine light recoiling rifle suitable for game from small to large. This rifle was special ordered with the deluxe pistol grip stock with correct Winchester embossed grip cap and a shotgun butt plate instead of the standard curved or crescent butt plate. Further, the pistol grip was special ordered checkered with matching checkering on the fore-end. Standard barrels for the 1894 rifle were round in shape and fitted with a full magazine. This example has the rare half-octagon/half-round barrel with a short, half-magazine. It was also configured by the original purchaser 117 years ago as a Takedown Rifle. During this time, it was common for hunters to travel by train from urban areas to the country. A takedown rifle made for a small case that was easy to store in the compartments of trains at this time. It is probable that the original purchaser of this fine rifle was a person of means, as such a special order Winchester cost considerably more than a standard model. To put the rarity of this fine rifle into context, according to the standard reference work, “The Winchester Handbook” by George Madis, a count was made in 1941 when all the Winchester records were still extant. At this time, only 16,581 rifles and carbines combined were made in .25-35. For comparison, 857,613 were made in .30 WCF (.30-30 Winchester) and 101,423 were made in .32 Winchester Special caliber. Only 2671 rifles and carbines combined had shorter magazines; 3633 rifles were made with half-octagon barrels; 2179 rifles and carbines combined had special butt plates; 1879 rifles and carbines together were checkered; 2758 rifles were takedown, and a total of only 2983 rifles/carbines had pistol grips. Any one of these features would be considered rare on a Model 1894, but combining the caliber, pistol grip, takedown, checkering, shotgun butt plate, and half octagon/half magazine features in a rifle chambered in .25-35 is extremely unusual and desirable. By 1930, well over a million 1894s had been manufactured and only a very small percentage of these were special ordered with one or more non-standard features. This rifle shows normal use, but was well taken care of. The wood to metal fit around the receiver is very tight and the pistol grip cap is intact. The checkering, while worn from honest use, is still apparent. Similarly, the forearm shows checkering and is without chips or cracks. The takedown is tight and the correct Winchester markings on the barrel and upper tang are correct and sharp. The receiver has aged to an attractive uncleaned patina, while the barrel shows fine aged blue. The action is tight with strong springs and the bore retains strong rifling and, aside from being a bit dark, which is typical, it is in fine condition. The barrel is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevation bar intact mated with a Rocky Mountain blade front sight. The Model 1894 was a popular rifle with lawmen, sportsmen, and especially with the Klondike Gold Seekers in Alaska beginning in 1898. Many consider this Jonathan Browning designed rifle to be the finest and most modern tubular magazine lever action rifle Winchester ever produced. A rare opportunity to acquire a classic, very early production and historically significant Winchester with exceptionally rare, unusual and desirable special order features in very fine condition. The caliber .25-35 by itself makes this a seldom encountered Model 1894. Most advanced Winchester collections do not have a Model 1894 in this caliber with these features. Serial Number: 216354. This firearm qualifies as an Antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

North & Judd Silver Mounted High Port Bridle Bit

Lot # 104 (Sale Order: 99 of 739)

Featured in this lot is this North & Judd silver mounted high port bridle bit, circa 1920's. The bit shows a high port with a cricket in the center, a unique silver mount...moreed "S" shank design with slobber strap connectors, and a wonderful silver mounted button at the top of the shank of the bit. North and Judd was a very large company based in Connecticut that produced saddlery and other hardware, from bells to buckles. The firm employed hundreds of workers and eventually would buy out the Buermann Company in 1926. This is why you will often see many Buermann patterns with the North & Judd Anchor Brand, as many popular Buermann patterns continued to be sold after North and Judd acquired them. The North and Judd stamp on these pieces dates them to after 1926; they are less valuable than similar Buermann pieces. The condition of this bridle bit is good, with oxidation and patina consistent with the age of bit. The measurements of this bridle bit are 6 1/4" x 6" x 1 1/2".
