1978 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40
Lot # 079 (Sale Order: 81 of 167)
This vehicle is being offered for sale from the J.Craig Venter Collection. Craig Venter is a world renowned biotechnologist and is known for leading one of the first draft sequences of the human genome.
Much like the vintage Land Rover, the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser has a devoted following all its own. Both vehicles were developed in the early-1950s and were based on the Willys M38 Jeep, which earned worldwide respect in WWII.
When Toyota and Land Rover went head-to-head in the 1960s, Toyota won nearly every encounter in the roughest parts of the former British Empire. The short-wheelbase FJ40 was harder to kill and didn?t require as much maintenance as its British counterpart. While the older Land Rovers enjoy limited use as distressed weekend showpieces, similar FJ40s can still be found on the job today as sturdy work trucks.
135 hp, 4,230 cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission with low range and part-time AWD, semi-elliptic front and rear springs with live axle, and hydraulic front disc and rear drum brakes.
- Rust-free Arizona example; recent frame-off restoration
- Finished in original Freeborn Red with Cygnus White hardtop
- Surely one of the best FJ40s in existence
The FJ40 also made considerable inroads into the Jeep market in the U.S. in the 1960s and 1970s. Toyota then shifted its focus to the rest of the world in the 1980s; the barebones FJ40 was built in Brazil as the Bandeirante, in Venezuela as the Macho, and Australia still offers the updated 70 series for their rugged terrain. The last FJ40s were imported to the U.S. in 1983, after being replaced by a softer Land Cruiser SUV. Now, even the newest FJ40s in the U.S. are 30 years old, and as survivors, they are becoming scarce, and the prices are rising.
The best examples are becoming more exclusive, especially those featuring high-grade restorations.
The FJ40 on offer is a rust-free Arizona/California/Maine car that has been subject to a frame-off professional restoration (photo book available). Fully documented and photographed, the frame has been powder-coated, the body media blasted, and it is described as ?mechanically 100 percent.? A small lift accommodates the 33...10.50 Goodrich tires that have been mounted to the factory wheels. The interior has correct grey vinyl, and the hardtop is fitted with rear ambulance doors. Improved performance with the addition of a Weber carburetor and headers.

1967 Austin-Healey MKIII Convertible
Lot # 085 (Sale Order: 87 of 167)
This vehicle is being offered for sale from the J.Craig Venter Collection. Craig Venter is a world renowned biotechnologist and is known for leading one of the first draft sequences of the human genome.
This is last of the big Healey?s, was fully restored by marque specialist Kurt Tanner, and has a BMIHT certificate
Over the years, the Austin-Healey progressed from being the sturdy, fun-to-drive two-seater with a folding top and side screens, to a sophisticated touring convertible with wind-up windows. The final iteration was the 3000 Mark III, which added new refinements, including a walnut veneer-trimmed interior, redesigned seats with a rear seat suitable for children, an easy-to-erect top, and an adjustable steering column, yet it gave up nothing in terms of performance. Engine modifications, such as a new camshaft design, stronger valve springs, and two-inch SU HD8 carburetors, delivered an increase of almost 20 brake horsepower, for a total output of some 150 horses. Servo-assisted brakes were now standard equipment. As a result, the 3000 Mark III is the most desired ?Big Healey.?
150 bhp, 2,912 cc overhead valve inline six-cylinder engine with twin HD8 SU carburetors, four-speed manual transmission plus overdrive, independent front suspension with coil springs and live rear axle with semi-elliptic rear springs, and servo-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes, and a 92? wheelbase.
The car offered here hails from the last year of production, and it enjoyed a beautiful frame-off, nut-and-bolt restoration by the highly regarded Austin-Healey expert Kurt Tanner, of Upland, California. The color scheme of Golden Beige over Red Ambla upholstery with a black top is factory-correct, and the car is equipped with the four-speed transmission with overdrive, a heater, and chrome wire wheels. Finished to what can only be described as concours standards, the restoration is documented extensively in photos, which accompany the car, along with its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate. The result is a Healey that?s appearance shines as much as its performance. It will be a pleasure to drive and to own.

1934 Packard Model 731 11th series Phaeton
Lot # 088 (Sale Order: 90 of 167)
Built during the depths of the Great Depression, this extremely rare, Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) award winning 1934 Packard Twelve 1107 Dual-Windshield Phaeton is a stunning example of one of the finest motor cars ever produced. For more than a century, automobile enthusiasts have considered Packard to be the epitome of elegance. Stylish designs and high-quality engineering propelled Packard to the front of the highly competitive luxury car market. This Phaeton proudly embodies all the characteristics of Packard?s high standards and is one of the most sought-after examples within the true classic car collector community.
The 11th Series Packard Twelve 1107 was considered the top of the line offering for the 1934 model year. Production records from this period are inconsistent. However, it is widely accepted that this 731 Phaeton is extremely rare with an estimated 10 examples ever being produced.
As one would expect of a vehicle of this rarity, this Packard was restored to an extremely high standard. It was formerly owned by well-known and established Packard collector Mr. John Wheatley of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Under Mr. Wheatly?s ownership, this Dual-Windshield Phaeton won a prestigious CCCA National First Prize Award at the Grand Classic of Denver in 1982 with badge no.1030. Mr. Wheatly entered two Packards in that show, both winning National First Prize Awards. Any Packard formerly owned by Mr. Wheatly is highly sought after by serious collectors and this automobile is no exception. Currently this Packard is being offered from a private collection of extremely rare Classic and Brass Era automobiles.
Lovingly cared for, this Phaeton has been maintained to a high degree and shows amazingly well for an older restoration which speaks highly of the quality of work that was performed. This Packard is finished in an elegant, two-tone combination of burgundy on the fenders and upper body panels complemented by a brilliant red all side body panels. The canvas roof accents the red tones exceptionally well. The burgundy color scheme is repeated throughout the interior compartment of the leather upholstery, door panels, and is accented with a soft brown carpeting. Chrome wire wheels wrapped by white wall tires present a sporty elegance to the presentation. Multiple accessories including metal covered dual side mounted spare tires equipped with mirrors, dual side spotlights, and wind-wings complete the look of the car. The paint and finish show extremely well with its brilliant shine and overall is in very good condition. Restored over 40 years ago, close inspection reveals a few select spots where the paint has developed imperfections due to aging over the years. Overall, this car is a stunner, a beautiful example of the pure elegance of Packard.
As attractive and well designed as this Phaeton is on the outside, the heart of this automobile is equally exceptional. Packard?s famous 445.5ci V12 engine is whisper quiet at idle, starts exceptionally well, is smooth and responsive to the throttle. Power is transferred through a smooth shifting three-speed selective Synchromesh transmission. As the vehicle warms up, the radiator louvers open and adjust as designed to help facilitate proper cooling. Under the car, the chassis, frame and components are as clean and precise as the rest of the vehicle presents. Again noting, this car is a former CCCA First Prize Champion, and it proudly represents that.
Despite all the beauty and design represented by this Packard, it is a rolling work of art that was meant to be driven. Drivers will appreciate the smooth accelerating and shifting of this true classic. Passengers will experience a smooth, luxurious, spacious ride as this 1107 seems to float driving down the road. Aiding in passenger comfort, this Phaeton is fitting with the correct accessory dual windshield, providing added comfort to passengers in the rear.
Opportunities to own a vehicle of this pedigree are rarely found. After years of ownership and private transfer, this wonderful Packard will be offered for the first time for public sale. This 1934 1107 Packard Twelve, Dual Windshield Phaeton is a wonderful example of a bygone era and is one of the finest and rarest luxury automobiles ever produced. It is a CCCA National First Prize Champion, and a worthy addition to any serious collector?s stable. Simply ?ask the man who owns one,? and they?ll tell you how special this automobile is.

1931 Chrysler Imperial CG Coupe
Lot # 091 (Sale Order: 93 of 167)
By the late 1920?s Walter Chrysler had taken the remains of the former Maxwell Motor Company and turned it into one of the most significant automotive corporations of all time, the Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler made an impressive reputation built on quality, engineering and affordability. By the end of the decade, Walter Chrysler had set his sights on a flagship model to compete in the competitive luxury market. The result was the elegant Chrysler Imperial. This award winning example, a 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial Custom Coupe is perhaps one of the most significant examples of the Imperial line in the United States today and possibly one of the finest true classic automobiles to be found.
Like so many competitors at the time, Chrysler offered the CG Imperial chassis for sale with a full catalog of ?Custom Line? bodies to choose from. This example is believed to be one of only two LeBron bodied custom 2/4 passenger rumble seat coupes in existence. Rediscovered in the 1970s? this Imperial eventually found its way into the hands of well-known Imperial expert and restorer Joe Morgan. Mr. Morgan discovered that this vehicle maintained the majority of its original components including engine, chassis, firewall and the majority of the original body. Of the 339 imperials built over a three-year period, only two ?Custom Line? coupes are known to exist today. Mr. Morgan used the other example as a guide during the restoration of this vehicle.
No expense was spared in the complete nut and bolt concours quality restoration of this automobile. When completed, this Imperial was officially unveiled at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance in 2006. Since completion this vehicle has always been kept and maintained to a high standard by a select few prestigious private collections. In 2023 this CG Coupe received its AACA National First Prize, another prestigious honor which speaks to the caliber of the vehicle?s quality.
Not only is this Imperial one of the most stylish automobiles ever created, but this rolling work of art is an engineering marvel as well. Under the long, graceful hood sits the 385ci straight eight engine capable of 125hp paired to a four-speed synchromesh transmission. Four wheel hydraulic brakes and an advanced geometry suspension on a 145 wheelbase chassis create an automobile with exceptional performance, capable of speeds up to 100MPH. As one would expect, this Imperial runs and drives as one would expect.
A perfect combination of power and prestige, this elegantly designed automobile was completed in correct 1931 Chrysler colors a two tone Pembroke Gray ? Smoke Grey combination. Subtle touches such as the matching dark red painted wheels with matching color pinstripe help to complement the sweeping lines and curves of this marvelous automobile. On the interior, the dark red interior matches the wheels and pinstripe tying the color combinations together.
On the interior one can experience the highest level of design, luxury and functionality available for that time period. All the upholstery and coachwork was done to award winning standards and both the coupe and rumble seat interiors match.
Simply put, this 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial ?Custom Line? coupe is one of the finest true classic automobiles in the nation today. It is an extremely rare model, with two known examples known to exist, and a prestigious Pebble Beach participant and an AACA National First Prize winner. This automobile would be a welcomed entrant in any major concours d? elegance or any classic car tour or caravan. Serious collectors should take note of the opportunity to become the caretaker of this amazing piece of automotive history.

Buick Wildcat III Concept Drawing 1954/55
Lot # 092 (Sale Order: 94 of 167)
For over the past 50 years, this relic has been a prized position of the same family. Most concepts cars and their materials have a short life. It was general practice of manufacturers to dispose of the drawings, renderings, and even the cars themselves. The current caretaker explains that his grandfather and father worked for Buick and Delco respectively in the early 1960?s. Believed to be found during a cleaning out process of unwanted items, this drawing was brought home and hung in the garage of the Flint, Michigan house where it remained for decades. Remaining in relative obscurity to the Automotive world until now, the time has come to reintroduce this important artifact.
The Wildcat concept series by Buick were important projects for General Motors and Harley Earl in the 1950?s. Buick Wildcat III was unveiled for the 1955 GM Motorama that toured the United States to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston. It is believed that this drawing was created in 1954 as part of the design process and used promotional display. General Motors photographs show this drawing next to clay models of Wildcat III. The General Motors book ?Styling: The Look Of Things? produced Motors for the 1955 Motorama, prominently features Buick Wildcat III and this drawing numerous times. Wildcat III, and specifically this drawing, are representative of General Motors best styling and creative efforts of the mid 1950?s. It is estimated that over 2,000,000 people viewed Wildcat III during these Motorama tours. Currently, representatives of General Motors Archives are aware of this artwork and have confirmed its authenticity.
While somewhat faded on the edges, the brilliant colors of the air brushed details are as vibrant as ever. Intended to be a ?package drawing,? this rendering shows various automotive components of the vehicle in a cutaway form within the outline of the general design. Wildcat III was a long, sleek two-seat convertible with an extremely low-slung appearance, painted a vibrant red with red leather interior.
Fogg & Dalton Art Restorations recently custom built a mylar wrapped, wood framed cradle with foam board backing to properly mat and protect this artwork and help prepare it for however its next caretaker would choose to display it.
Simply stated, this is one of the most significant artifacts of the golden era of automotive concept car design to be found. It brings to life the brilliance of Harley Earl?s General Motors design team and invokes the excitement and emotion felt by visitors at the General Motors Motorama, simply by standing in its presence.

1911 Stanley-Steamer Model 63
Lot # 093 (Sale Order: 95 of 167)
Being sold with No Reserve is this beautiful 1911 Stanley-Steamer Model 63
10 hp double-acting two-cylinder steam engine, tubular front axle and live rear axle with full-elliptical leaf springs, and two-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 104 in.
The iconic Stanley Steamers from the coffin-nose era are without doubt the 20-horsepower Model H Gentleman?s Speedy Roadster and the 30-horsepower Model K Semi-Racer. During this era, however, the Stanley Motor Carriage Company?s bread-and-butter line comprised mostly 10-horsepower cars, including the long-running Model E variations of 1905?1909 and the 60-series cars built from 1910 to 1914. Although they weren?t as fast as the 20- and 30-horsepower cars, let alone the streamlined Rocket that set the world land speed record in January 1906, they encompass the same technology and are every bit as roadworthy and enjoyable.
From 1910 to 1913, 60-series cars totaled to 1,165 units, handily outselling the 70-series 20-horsepower cars, which managed just 877. In fact, the Model 63 10-horsepower Toy Tonneau, of which this car is an excellent example, was the second-best-selling model of the period; its 219 cars built between September 1910 and July 1912 was bested only by the Model 60 2-3-4-Passenger Runabout.
This attractive Stanley was acquired as a restoration project by the current owner in 2009. The effort had begun many years earlier by Carl William Rothhausen, of British Columbia, Canada, but like many others, it had stalled long short of completion. The ?restoration kit? comprised a rolling chassis; a new body by the late Carl Amsley, of Pennsylvania, who was a legend in Stanley circles; and many boxes of parts.
The chassis was sent to Alan Kelso?s well-respected Steaman Inc., a restoration facility in McConnellsville, Pennsylvania. Kelso thoroughly restored it with a new boiler, burner, and pilot, and much work was put into the replacement of valves and piping. Local craftsmen in Washington State completed the restoration and applied the final detailing. The body is painted deep red, with black moldings and straw pinstriping. The fenders are black and contrast with the beige wheels and running gear.
The car is upholstered in buttoned black leather, with a matching black canvas top that has a windshield curtain. This dual-fuel car, with separate pilot and main burner systems, has a rare original pilot torch that is fed from the Presto-Lite gas lighting system. This system was a welcome and convenient tool for lighting the pilot in the days before inexpensive plumbers? torches, and they are rarely seen today. The original split valve for the torch, which is fitted at the gas cylinder, is a particularly hard-to-find item.
The car was running in 2010, and it completed its maiden voyage on that year?s western steam tour in Idaho. With a new top installed, the car was complete in 2011, and it took part in the Pacific Northwest Steam Society tour in Sedro Woolley, Washington. This vehicle essentially wears a fresh restoration, and it runs and drives beautifully, with all the sensations that only a steam car can provide.
- High-quality restoration by Alan Kelso, Carl Amsley, and local craftsmen
- Rare Presto-Lite pilot torch
- An outstanding tour car for AACA, HCCA, and VMCCA events
