Each medal shows Victory crowning a Union soldier on the obve...morerse with the dates 1861-1865. The reverse reads “THE STATE OF OHIO TO (soldier’s name) VETERAN (soldier’s unit) OHIO VOLUNTEER (branch).” All medals are engraved to a soldier of the Infantry or Light Artillery. CONDITION: none of the medals have ribbons, and 10 have at least partial suspension devices intact. Three show only a small drilled hole for suspension. Medals show varying degrees of wear. Measuring 11" in diameter, the red & yellow-painted ...morekerosene container, highlighted in black, features "Buffalo Bills Wild West Show" surrounded by a painted rope. A 30" crooked pipe terminates with the base of the lamp. Two valves on the pipe regulate the flow of fuel. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: descriptive sheet and auction tag. Canvas belt with a leather 6-hole tongue that is stamped “WATERVLIET ARSENAL A.R. SMITH”. Square brass buckle with a single prong. The belt holds 54 45/70 cartridges. The...more interior of the belt has a partially legible marking that appears to read “F. Walther Co. F.____”. CONDITION: canvas is a bit brittle and some stitching is broken. The reverse shows a spread-winged American eagle with glory above. The bullion-trimmed red velvet collar/sash. A typewritten affixed to the collar reads, in part, “William Harrison Presidential Peace Medal dated Aug. 8, 1803”. CONDITION: medal shows some wear & tarnish. RARE DEERSKIN HOLSTER POSSIBLY FROM YANKTON SOUIX.

Lot # 3168 (Sale Order: 173 of 487)      

An exceptionally attractive holster measuring 11 1/2" long and 5" wide, excluding the fringe. The holster is made from brain tanned deerskin. Body of the holster is of tw...moreo pieces stitched together on the front & rear edges with the rear edge & toe having long buckskin fringe. Top rear of holster has two long leather thongs with tin cones and dyed red horsehair tassels. The body of holster, as well as the flap, are beautifully beaded, utilizing lazy stitch on thread. The beading consists primarily of white beads with green, yellow, pink, dark blue, & red bowtie patterns down the front and on the flap. Edge of flap has widely spaced red beads. Accompanied by a note from consignor who states that this made was by a Yankton Sioux of South Dakota and had been donated in 1951 to a Montana Museum. Also accompanied by a glass topped wooden display case. PROVENANCE: Wes Adams Estate Collection sold by James D. Julia in the spring of 2012. CONDITION: beading appears to be completely intact with no noticeable losses. Leather is sound, showing moderate wear on the backside with some soil around the rear edge and beading of the front edge. An exceptional example of a late 19th century Sioux ceremonial holster.
