UNUSUAL CUSTOM RIFLE IN 22/30 ORESKY CALIBER BUILT

ON US INLAND M-1 SEMI AUTO CARBINE. Cal. 22/30 Oresky. S# 5422843. Bbl. 18 1/4". This custom carbine using the wildcat 22/30 cartridge was developed by Edward Oresky of E...moreast Newport N.Y. It is similar to the 5.7 MMJ developed by the late Melvin M. Johnson of WWII fame. These cartridges are very efficient and have almost no felt recoil making them a pleasure to fire. The 5.7 MMJ was available as a factory load but the 22/30 Oresky is a hand loading proposition only. This well made custom carbine is based on an Inland M-1 carbine with a newly made. 22 caliber barrel. The original G.I. sights are retained including the stamped aperture rear sight and the blade front sight with protective ears. Plain barrel band w/swivel. Straight cut slide. Flat bolt. Milled "INLAND" trigger housing with rotary safety. G.I. walnut stock set. Oval cut hi-wood buttstock marked with boxed "RIA / EB" and "P" proof under grip. 4 rivet handguard. MAGS: 1-5rd. converted from 15-rd. UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 2-die set of RCBS Group "G" dies in original box. Dies appear unused. CONDITION: stock set has a professional refinish over the usual wear and handling marks leaving a good appearance. The Johnson rifle was designed ...moreby Marine Captain Melvin M. Johnson, Jr. as a replacement for the 1903 Springfield rifles. The Johnson rifle did very well in trials but did not ultimately prevail against the M1 Garand. The Dutch government contracted for a large quantity of Johnson rifles to equip troops in the Netherlands East Indies. Only a small quantity were delivered with the balance of the contract purchased by the U.S. Marine Corp. These rifles were also used by the joint U.S. and Canadian Special Service Force. Bbl. 21 7/8". Bbl. and bbl. extension are numbered "1736K". Bbl. is marked on top of chamber "J.A. / 30-06 (marked underneath chamber with "J" and circular acceptance mark. The receiver is marked on the right rear with the Dutch acceptance "star" over the Cranston Arms inverted triangle logo. Receiver markings on top include "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS" / MODEL OF 1941 / CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO". Adjustable aperture rear sight graduated to 1,000 meters. Blade front sight with protective ears. Bayonet lug is present on bbl. Walnut stock set. Buttstock and forend have the early one piece construction in the mag. area. Flat checkered steel buttplate. Unmarked Model 1907 brown leather sling with steel hooks. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 7 1/2" original all metal spike blade bayonet. Bayonet is unmarked. Unmarked brown leather scabbard. Bayonet has been cleaned but retains 50% of original finish with light wear. Scabbard has very light wear and staining but retains tight stitching and is in good serviceable condition. stock set has very good appearance with a large percentage of a vintage arsenal rework finish. Stock has light wear and scattered scratches and handling marks. Notable scratches on right side of forend. Metal retains a large percentage of its original finish with light wear. The serial numbers rarely match on Johnson rifles as this was not done at the factory. Receiver is Marked on top "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS" "MODEL OF 1941" MADE IN PROVIDENCE R.I., U.S.A." "CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO" and patent info. Marked on right rear of receiver with "star" over inverted triangle around "CRANSTON ARMS CO." this is the Dutch acceptance mark. Aperture rear sight graduated to 1000 meters. Blade front sight with protective ears. Walnut stock set. Early non laminated style. Fine checkered buttplate. US issue tan leather Model 1907 sling. UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original unmarked 7 1/2" triangular blade bayonet and brown leather scabbard. Bayonet retains most of its Parkerized finish. Scabbard has light wear and staining but stitching remains tight. CONDITION: stock set has a very good appearance with only light wear and handling marks. HIGHLY DESIRABLE AND METICULOUSLY RESTORED US

MARINE CORPS 1ST ISSUE SPRINGFIELD GAS TRAP M-1 GARAND RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 3481. Bbl.24". This very early rifle was one of the first lot of 400 issued to the 2nd. Mari...morene Brigade, FMF, MCB, at San Diego California on Jan. 24,1939. The rifle is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Springfield Research Service to noted firearms author Scott Duff detailing the research on this particular rifle and the sources of the information. The rifle is listed by serial number and was manufactured between August 26, and September 23 rd 1938. It was subsequently inspected, reinspected, used in qualification firing and was last reported in the USMC on May 9, 1940. These rifles were the first production models of the iconic and widely used semi-automatic military rifle developed by John C. Garand, The new rifle was adopted January 9,1936 and became known for the name of its designer as the M-1 Garand. This rifle proved a great success and was widely used for many years and by many nations. The "Gas Trap" method of operation was replaced by "Gas Port" and a great many of these early rifles were rebuilt with the new system making an unaltered Garand a highly desirable collectors piece. The rifle has the original "Flush Nut" rear sight with the "Battle Range" elevation knob. The sight cover has a drawing number "B 8872". The blade front sight has protective wings with striations and a drawing number "B8882". The The markings on this rifle have been enhanced with white. The replacement barrel is marked on top under the rear handguard "REPRO" and "1997". The throat gauges less than 1. The muzzle was not gauged due to the gas trap. The receiver is marked on the right front corner with " D 28291" and " F" over tiny "B" visible when inverted. Has two punch proofs on the receiver bridge. The receiver has the welded " seventh round stoppage" repair inside the right rail. First revision bolt marked"D 28287 -1" with "J3B". The receiver and bolt both have two punch proofs. Slant cut two piece operating rod marked "D 35382-0". Rod has stress relief cut. Operating rod with "Keystone" springs is marked with " C-46014" on one side and on opposite side with "R". Early production gas cylinder with flutes and square sight base and numbered " D 28289". Plug with lightning cut is marked "B-8876-4. Unnumbered stacking swivel. Trigger Housing marked with drawing number " D 28290". Wide hammer stop pad. Floor plate tangs w/ angled cut. Milled trigger guard has the early grasping rings and drawing #" C-46025". Hammer numbered "C 46008-1". Trigger has" -2 " visible. Safety marked "C 46015-4". Walnut stock set. The buttstock has the modification for the trap buttplate including the deep storage holes visible when the buttplate is removed. Stock is marked on the left side with a boxed "S.A. S.P.G. the inspection marking of Stanley P. Gibbs. The encircled "P" proof is under the grip close to the trigger guard. Drawing # "D28293" is located on the belly of the stock. Buttplate is unmarked. Rear swivel screw marked "B 8881-6". Swivel has "B 8889". Rear hand guard is unmarked and has grooved band. Unmarked grooved lower band with solid pin. The front handguard is not numbered. " Lip type" front handguard ferrule. Well worn WW1 contract model 1907 leather sling marked "W.T.&B. CO. 1918". UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: nylon camouflage carrying case. CONDITION: The stock set retains a good amount of its original finish and crisp markings with the wear and handling marks expected from years of careful service. There is a missing chip at the toe app. 3/4" X 3/4". The receiver, operating rod, sights and barrel bands retain app. 50 percent of their original worn finish. The bolt, trigger housing assembly and gas cylinder assembly show more finish likely from a period arsenal replacement. The bolt does not always start open freely and may require a sharp tug. Very good shiny bore with sharp lands. (24-3796/RW). CURIO. $10,000-15,000.

SNIPER RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 3638613. Bbl. 24" marked w/ "S-A-5-52" & inverted "P" proof. Throat gauges 2.0. Muzzle gauges 1.0. "T105E1" Aperture rear sight. Blade front ...moresight w/ protective ears. The M1C sniper rifle was developed in the later part of WWII & saw service mostly in the Pacific Theater toward the close of the war. This example has a receiver drawing no. "D28291 35" which is in the correct range for these scarce rifles. Receiver fitted w/ Griffin & Howe side mt. Mount's S# on the left side does not match the rifle. Non matching but correct WWII vintage steel slide w/ slant cut scope rings. Rifle is equipped with a M82 telescope mfg. by Lyman Gun Sight Co. & was mfg. post 1948 as it has the newer style federal stock no. "F001-0084688". This scope utilizes a .875" diameter tube & is equipped w/ a vertical post w/out crosshair. Serial no. "43870". The drawing numbers appear in the correct locations on the eyepiece, adjustment mt. & dust caps. Scope is equipped w/ sliding sun shield & rubber eye cup. The S# on the blued steel slide does not match the rifle. The slide is equipped w/ the earlier type rounded & checkered levers. The slide is marked on top w/ "GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK / PAT. 1,856,549 MAY 3, 1932". All major parts markings except the 1962 dated replacement bbl. are "SA" including the mill trigger guard w/ drawing #. High Hump gas cyl. lock & cross slot gas cyl lock screw. Walnut stock set, buttstock (which is also a replacement) is marked on the left side w/ the defense acceptance eagle & marked under grip w/ encircled "P" proof. Stock is equipped w/ a brown leather lace on cheek piece having 2 brass attaching screws. Cheek piece is marked on left side w/ "line". The balance of the marking is illegible. Unmarked green web sling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: cone type flash hider marked "HIDER FLASH M2". Cleaning kit & plastic oiler w/ cleaning rod handle in butt. CONDITION: stock set has crisp markings w/ light to moderate wear & scattered handling marks. Cheekpiece has wear & scuffing w/ verdigris on brass parts. Metal parts retain a high degree of original parkerized finish w/ light wear & thinning. S# enhanced w/ white. Telescope has a worn thinning, greenish gray parkerized finish. Optics appear cloudy but serviceable. Slide has 60% original worn thinning finish. Very good shiny bore w/ sharp lands. PROVANANCE: from the Estate Collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1229/RW). The base shows evidence that it has been removed from the rifle & the screws re staked. The M84 telescope has been installed using a blued steel reproduction slide which is unmarked. The M84 telescope S# "40358" has a post & crosshair reticle plus features a correct rubber eye cup & sliding metal sunshade. The square hinged cover for the windage knob is not present. All major rifle components are marked "SA". Walnut stock set. Buttstock has been given an arsenal rework type finish. Hand guards appear to be replacements. Buttstock is fitted w/ a leather lace on cheek pad which is additionally fastened w/ rnd. head brass screws. Pad is marked "MRT 10-52". Green web sling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: cone type flash hider marked "HIDER FLASH M2 B HART MFG CO.". Cleaning kit & plastic oiler in butt. CONDITION: stock set has light wear, staining & handling marks. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. The M1D Sniper rifle was developed at the same time as the M1C but not put into production until Jan., 1951. The M1D scope mt. system was developed by the late John Garand. This rifle appears to be in the configuration of a batch of M1D rifles equipped w/ Weaver K4 Series 60B 4X telescopic sights ordered in 1964 for use in Viet Nam. The scopes & brackets to fit the 1" tube were ordered from International Armament Corporation. However definite proof that this is one of those rifles is not available. The mounting block on the rear of the bbl. has the alignment pin machine staked w/ four notches. The scope bracket has a different configuration from the original issue type. The thumb screw cap appears to be welded to the screw shank. The 2 socket head screws use a 3/32 inch wrench & screws are knurled on the outer edge. The scope w/ its blued steel tube is marked at the top rear "WEAVER K4 60-B / EL PASO TEX. U.S.A. PAT. PEND.". Scope is equipped w/ tapered post & crosshair reticle. Balance of major rifle parts are marked "SA" except for the "WRA" marked trigger housing. Prong type flash suppressor replaces gas cyl. lock. Cross slot gas cyl. lock screw. Unmarked replacement walnut stock set. Buttstock has tan leather lace on cheek pad w/ 2 brass screws marked on right side "MRT2 52". Additional screw hole is visible in belly of stock at end of pistol grip. Green web sling. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: cleaning kit & plastic oiler in butt. CONDITION: stock set has very good appearance w/ light wear & sm. scattered handling marks. Leather cheek pad has very light wear & staining. Metal retains 75% arsenal rework parkerized finish w/ thinning & light wear. Scope mt. has a lg. degree of it's parkerized finish w/ light wear. Scope retains 75% of it's blued finish w/ wear, scratches & handling marks. Optics appear clear & serviceable. Bore has worn lands turning dark in grooves. Barrel is marked on the left side "S-A-1-5?". The last digit has been obliterated by a round nosed punch. The throat gauges 1.5. The muzzle gauges 1.0. The receiver and hammer are marked "WRA" with the balance of the parts marked "SA". T105E1 aperture rear sight. Blade front sight with protective ears. The barrel has the correctly fitted base for the M84 scope. Correct short rear handguard. Walnut stock set. Buttstock is marked only with two "P" proofs under grip. The lace-on leather cheek piece is unmarked. The M84 scope is marked on a plate on the right side"TELESCOPE" / "SERIAL NO. 16818". The markings on the packing materials indicate that the scope was overhauled "4/68-SA4". The scope shows very light wear and the optics are sharp and clear. Post and crosshair reticle. Cal. 30-06. S# 1564279. Bbl. 24". Bbl. is marked on right side "SA D7312555 3 53 A 1916" "crossed cannons". Throat gauges 1.0. Muzzle gauges 1.0. The M1D Sniper rifle was...more designed during WWII by John Garand but was not produced in quantity until the Korean War. The M1D scope mounting system was considered more durable than its predecessor M1C. The rifles were made at Springfield by converting M1 Garand service rifles. This work was also performed by other arsenals and depots leaving the total number converted unclear. This rifle is a very good example which is made up on a WWII receiver. T105E1 aperture rear sight. Blade front sight with protective ears. The bbl. which is correctly dated has a turned down area ahead of the receiver to accept the M1D mount. The rear handguard is a shorter replacement which fits between the scope base and bbl. band. The scope bracket is in the correct style with 50 detent clicks and has the compression washer installed. The telescopic sight is marked on the nomenclature plate "TELESCOPE / M84 / SERIAL NO. (boxed) 38692". Turrets have square hinged dust caps. Ocular lens has rubber eye cup. Objective lens with sliding sunshade. Non tapered post reticle with horizontal crosshair. All visible parts markings are "SA" except safety is "IHC". Stamped trigger guard. Prong type flash suppressor. Walnut stock set. Buttstock is unmarked except for 2 encircled "P" proofs under grip. Lace on leather cheek piece marked "MRT / 11-62". Late type green web sling. CONDITION: telescope optics appear slightly clouded but serviceable. Ocular lens has crack extending from 12 o'clock to center and 8 o'clock to center. stock set has a good appearance with moderate wear and handling marks. Rear handguard has less wear. Cheek pad has staining, most notable in stitching area with several loose grommets. Metal retains 70% original finish. Bbl., scope block and gas cylinder have notably darker finish with less wear. Walnut stock set. Buttstock marked only with faint encircled "P" proof under grip Rear handguard is very proud of front of receiver. Brown leather military style sling. UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 15 3/4" fullered blade model 1942 bayonet. Marked on left ricasso "UC / US flaming bomb / 1942". Grooved composite grips. Green plastic scabbard with metal throat marked "US flaming bomb". Bayonet and scabbard have light wear and thinning finish. Also included: cleaning kit w/ handle, Plastic oiler and grease container. CONDITION: Stock set has an arsenal rework finish with light wear and handling marks. The toe has a moderate loss of wood. Metal retains app. 75% original Parkerized finish.
