CONDITION: Very good to near excellent overall as nickel plated at time of engraving. Metal retains 98% nickel with a couple small areas of freckling in sighting groove on top of frame. Metal features 97% reapplied nickel. blued parts exhibit some thinning finish. Approx. 1" finish scratch on left side of hammer. Very good grips have a few small chips at edges. COLT SAA REVOLVER OF POLICE CHIEF W. M. PETERSON.

Cal. 38 Special. S# 336877. W. (Waino) M. Peterson (1884–1955) was appointed Police Marshall of Lake Bluff, Illinois, on November 5th, 1907. From 1913 to 1945, he served ...moreas Police Chief of Winnetka, Illinois, on Chicago's suburban "gold coast." As Police Chief, he was known for cleaning up "vice conditions" in the village and was considered a valuable and efficient officer by community leaders. Chief Peterson carried this historic revolver during his law enforcement career. Bbl: shortened at breech end to 4" length with blade sight. Six shots of fluted cyl. The top of the bbl., ejector housing, backstrap, trigger guard, and screw heads have been added with geometric pattern hand engraving. Cyl. has simple line engraving. Blue and case-colored finish. Two-piece checkered hard rubber rampant colt grips. The revolver was mfg. 1918. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Chief Peterson's Winnetka police badge (no. 5). The holster is a hand-toulled Mexican double loop style carried on a V.L. & A. Chicago leather cartridge belt. A copy of the summer 2014 "Rampant Colt Magazine" features an article about Chief Peterson titled "A Lawman at the Crossroads in Prohibition Chicago." The article pictures this revolver and talks of Peterson's prohibition service and association with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and Special Agent Melvin Purvis. A hard-bound copy of "Jake Lingle, Chicago on the Spot" is signed by author John Boettiger with the following inscription: "To Police Chief W. M. Peterson, who lived through and knows this tale as intimately as the writer. With sincere wishes, John Boettiger, June 1932". Two display boxes contain medals and police association ribbons. A framed certificate from the International Association of Chiefs of Police dated March 1st, 1929 certifies W. M. Peterson as a member. A large binder full of letters and correspondence addressed to Mr. Peterson from the Chicago area and national organizations. The binder includes many pages of newspaper clippings from prohibition-era Chicago talking about crime and criminals, including Al Capone. A second thick binder contains numerous photographs and correspondences from Chief Peterson's storied career and also includes a bill of sale when his son sold this revolver to a California resident after his father's death. Also included is a rolled bundle containing many photographs. CONDITION: bbl., cyl., and grip straps retain 60% thinning blue showing edge and carry wear. The frame retains 60% of the darkly visible case colors. Grips show light wear. Action is sound with four notches on the hammer. Very good bore. (23-5446/DS). CURIO. $3,000-5,000.

The officer's model was offered for sale to ranking army officers for personal sporting use and was popular with officers statio...morened in the American west. A total of 477 were produced in 1875-85. Bbl. 26", round. Gold-washed combination front sight, model 1879 rear sight with wrist-mounted, mid-range, Vernier-style peep sight. Blue finished bbl. and receiver with case-colored breech block, top tang, lock, hammer, and trigger guard. Action and lock have open pattern scroll engraving. Lockplate is marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" forward of an American eagle. Band-fastened, half-length walnut stock; left ear has clear "SWP" cartouche with 1885 date. Features include engraved pewter forearm cap with fancy finial and blue-finished carbine buttplate with engraved heel. Forearm and stock have wraparound hand checkering with screw-attached pistol grip. The 3rd model's features include 5/8" longer forearm tip, squared profile forearm cap, and unplated brass tip on the hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: extremely fine, one of the best we have seen. Bbl. and receiver retain over 95% blue, showing small marks and spots. Breech block lock and other fittings retain over 95% vivid case colors. Forend band and Vernier sight staff have small spots of finish loss. Original stock finish shows a few scattered minor small scratches and marks, having very small chips at the toe. Mechanics are fine. Bright bore with strong rifling. An extremely fine Officers model. (01-25742/DS). ANTIQUE. $20,000-$27,500.

EARLY SPRINGFIELD 1875 TYPE I OFFICER MODEL US

TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. NSN. A total of 477 officers model rifles were produced between 1875-85. Most of these were purchased by officers w/ about 100 issued to offic...moreers in militia & guard units. The remainder were sold to commercial outlets after the adoption of the Krag rifle. Type 1 rifle. Estimated production of type I rifles was 125 in 1875-76 only. Unnumbered model 1873 action has an 1873 dated high arch breech block. Receiver, 1873 dated lock, hammer, breech block, buttplate and bbl. band have moderate coverage of scroll hand engraving with straight line borders. Set trigger. Original blue and case colored finish. Model 1873 long comb style stock with short forearm tip having engraved pewter nosecap with long floral finial. Forearm and wrist are checkered. No pistol grip was provided on Type I rifles. Left ear of stock has a clear "ESA" cartouche referring to principle subinspector "Erskine S Allin". Hardwood cleaning rod has nickel finished brass fittings and is held by a single iron pipe. Bbl. 26" with Beech combination front sight and model 1873 rear sight installed with slotless screws. Long inletted base Sharps vernier tang sight with disc aperture. This sight was used on the first 25 officer model rifles produced. WEIGHT: 7 lbs, 14.8 oz. CONDITION: bbl. retains over 70% original blue with a lightly muted plum appearance showing small spots of surface corrosion. Action and fittings have faded to gray with areas of light brown patina. Stock has aged darkened appearance with lightly worn checkering showing dents, scratches and marks. Lock area has small cracks and chips with small added wood repair forward of lock. Hammer does not always fall when utilizing set trigger, otherwise mechanically fine. Bore shows lightly worn rifling with small spots of very light pitting. PROVENANCE: From the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (01-23377/DS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.

CONDITION: very good overall, metal gray patina, stock is sound, showing saddle wear, partially discerned inspector cartouche, "E9" is distinct. Mechanically fine good rifled bore. Left side of the stock has hand-scratched initials "RK" over a raised "A" near the center of the buttplate. Both sides of the stock have other hand-scratched markings. CONDITION: metal finish is largely fading to brown. Refinished stock shows numerous dents, scratches, and marks. Bore has a dark, frosted appearance with weak rifling. (01-25772/DS). Blade front sight with folding leaf rear sight. An 1873-dated high-arch breechblock and an 1873-dated Springfield lock. Stock is altered to a half-length sporter configuration with an ebony-tipped schnable forearm having checkering at the wrist and forend areas. Original U.S.-marked buttplate. Brass museum tag attached to the trigger guard is marked "J. M. Davis / 7288 / Memorial." CONDITION: metal finish has faded to a mottled gray-brown, showing spots of corrosion and light pitting. Stock has worn finish and checkering, showing numerous dents and marks. Sound mechanics. The pitted bore retains largely intact rifling. (01-25774/DS). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
