FINE EARLY NIMSCHKE ENGRAVED COLT SAA, ORIGINAL

DOUBLE SIDE CARVED IVORY GRIPS. Cal. 45 S# 23451. Profusely scroll engraved in the distinctive Nimschke style, nickel plated. This is among the finest "as found" complete...more and original survivors with the best fit and patinaed carved ivory grips. Left side has standard Mexican eagle with snake, the opposite grip is personalized with relief carved initials & horseshoe. Pictured on page 334 of the Colt Engraving Book, which states this revolver belonged to a sheriff. This Revolver in standard configuration, manufactured 1876, 7.5" barrel, bullseye ejector button, Hartford address with dashes. You won't find a more honest early SAA showing honest use and wear, but well cared for. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of page 334 from Wilson's the Colt Engraving Book, vol. 1, 2001 where revolver is shown on full page. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, complete and matching, well fit, crisp engraving & markings, grips have fine smooth patina. Mechanically fine, good rifled bore. SAA CAVALRY REVOLVER WITH FACTORY LETTER. Cal. 45 Colt. S# 133583. Bbl. 7 1/2" with fixed blade front sight. Rinaldo A. Carr was a civilian employee and the principal Sub...more-Inspector for the final 2 Government contracts in 1889 and 1890. The known serial number range for these revolvers was 131,208-140,136. "RAC" inspector's initials marked on frame, cyl, bbl. & bottom left of grip. "K" factory inspector initial found on end of ejector rod assembly, bbl. (beneath ejector housing), ahead of trigger bow & on bottom of grip frame. "P" proof marked on bottom of barrel & side of cyl. "O" marked in hammer slot. Matching numbers appear on frame, trigger guard frame, butt, cyl. & bbl. Frame marked on left side "US" with 3 line 3 date patent markings. 1 Line block letter barrel address. Blued bbl., 6 shot fluted cyl. & grip frame. Case hardened frame & hammer. "Donut hole" ejector rod head. One piece walnut grip, with correct "RAC" stamped on bottom and no cartouche on sides, indicative of arsenal replacement. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory letter stating the following: "Serial Number: 133583/ Caliber: .45/c/ Barrel Length: Not Listed/ Finish: Blue/ Type of stocks: Not Listed/ Sold To: United States Government/ Delivered to U.S. Government Inspector/ Address: located at the Colt plant/ Date of Shipment: June 16, 1890/ Number of same type Guns in shipment: 150". CONDITION: overall very good plus. Bbl. & ejector rod housing retain 90% original blue with high edge wear & areas of mild thinning. Cyl. blue. Frame & hammer retain 40% original case colors; bright & vivid in protected areas with areas of mild brown patina. Grip frame has faded to gray. Cyl. pin retaining screw shows minor wear from improper screwdriver use, remainder of screws are crisp. Grips appear very good with slight shrinkage at heel & toe due to age. Bore retains sharp rifling with scattered areas of moderate pitting. A very good example of a U.S. Cavalry SAA. (01-25557/BH). ANTIQUE. $17,000-22,000.

Due to decreased demand in 188...more8, approx. 100 of these were converted to 22 RF, & 1 to 32 RF. No other cals. have been documented. New bbls. & cyls. were fitted & the trigger guards were restamped 22 cal. It is unknown who or when this revolver was rechambered to 22 WCF. Bbl. 7 1/2" w/ a lowered front sight. Six shot fluted cyl. 2 piece checkered hard rubber eagle grips. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from Charles B. Layson, contributing editor "SAA Revolvers", "The Blue Book of Gun Values". 2 page letter detailing the history of the rimfire Colt SAAs & talking of Mr. Layson's opinion of this revolver. As noted in "A STUDY OF THE COLD SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER" by Graham, Kopec & Moore, "The U.S. C...moreolt Single Action revolvers manufactured in 1875 are among the most interesting, and least known U.S. Colt Cavalry revolvers. There were three U.S. Ordnance Principal Sub-inspectors who inspected these revolvers at the Colt factory." The two known inspectors are identified as A.P. Casey & Samuel B. Lewis while the third, unknown, is recognized as using a tiny single "J" initial. Trigger guard, cyl & bbl. all bear this initial "J", with bbl. also having small initial "P". Hammer slot marked "C". Matching numbers on frame, grip frame, cyl. & bbl. 1 Piece walnut grips with faintly visible "APC" cartouche on left side. 1 line Italic bbl. address. 2 Line patent date on left side of frame followed by "US". CONDITION: metal has turned gray with an even brown patina. Frame & ejector rod housing exhibit areas of cleaned pitting. Cyl. pin retaining screw appears replacement. Grips appear to have been lightly sanded & refinished with cartouche still lightly visible. Bore shoes even light pitting with strong rifling. All 4 clicks present, last notch is weak and barely holds. (01-25341/BH). ANTIQUE. $8,000-10,000.

R...moreevolver features 75% coverage of a well executed floral scroll engraving throughout. Engraving is attractively highlighted by gold wire inlaid borders at bottom & rear of frame at both sides, muzzle end of bbl., edges of cyl. flutes & outer edges of recoil shield. All external marking have been gold filled, including rampant Colt. Double bands of gold & rose gold inlay appear at rear of both bbl. & cyl. Left side of recoil shield features bugling bull elk. Loading gate has side profile bear head. Gold plated trigger. Sides of blued hammer are engraved with floral scroll terminating in an eagle head. 1 Piece smooth grips. CONDITION: Very good to near excellent overall. Metal retains 98% custom blue finish with a very light patina in sighting groove on top of frame. Area where sight was removed has small void with light oxidation. Very good grips show light staining & minor scuffs. Bore retains strong rifling with scattered areas of light pitting and an overall frosted appearance. Overall a very attractive Single Action Army. (01-25305/BH). ANTIQUE. $8,000-10,000.

Flat top target style frame. Six shot fluted cyl. Blue finish. Checkered trigger. Trigger guard has an added metal finger rest attached by a single screw. 2 piece hard rubber eagle grips. 925 flat top target models were mfg. 1888-96. This revolver was mfg. 1890. CONDITION: 70% blue showing flaking on frame. Cyl. is fading to brown & shows a drag line. Grips show light wear. Tight action, hammer retains all 4 clicks. REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt S# 133489. Bbl. 7 1/2". Six-shot fluted cyl. Left side of the frame is stamped "U.S." after the standard patent dates. Bottom of frame and bbl. hav...moree R.A.C. inspector's mark, referring to Principal Subinspector Rinaldo A. Carr. Trigger guard and butt of gun are marked with the inspector's initial "K". Frame, bbl., grip straps, and cyl. have matching numbers. Ejector rod has a standard-style head. Walnut grips. Right panel has "RAC" cartouche. Left panel has 1890 date over "SEB" cartouche referring to Ordnance Inspector Captain Stanhope English Blunt. Final US contracts for SAA cavalry revolvers were dated November 12th, 1889, and September 19th, 1890. Each contract consisted of 2,000 revolvers. This entire range of revolvers was inspected by Rinaldo A. Carr. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: letter from Colt Industries detailing the following information: "Caliber: .45 / Barrel Length: 7 1/2" / Finish: Blue / Type of Stocks: Not Listed / Sold to: U.S. Government / Delivered to: U.S. Government Inspector at Colt Plant / Date of Shipment: July 3, 1890 / Number of Same Type Guns in Shipment: 150". Also includes a letter of authentication from John A. Kopec. CONDITION: bbl. retains 30% dull, fading blue, showing spots of light pitting. Cyl., frame and grip straps have faded to gray, showing light pitting and corrosion. Lightly refinished grips retain visible cartouches with dents at butt. Sound action retains four clicks. Standard configuration nickel plated, 7.5" barrel, one line Hartford address, stamped on right side "44-S & W" denoting rare S&W Russian 44 calibe...morer, checkered Colt logo hard rubber eagle grips. This revolver was made in 1894 and one of only nine single action army revolvers in this rare caliber shipped that year. (Wilkerson & Hoyt). UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory archive letter confirming configuration of this rare single action, shipped to August 28th 1894, nickel, 7.5" barrel, 44 Russian caliber, stocks not listed. Shipped to George Worthington Co., Cleveland OH as part of 6 revolver shipment. George Worthington (1813-1871) started his large wholesale hardware company in 1829 and of 1990 was oldest continuous running company in Cleveland, OH. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, all matching good discernible markings, retains about 95% re-nickeled finish. Mechanically sound, good rifled bore .
