FINE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY ARTILLERY REVOLVER

Lot # 4052 (Sale Order: 54 of 530)

WITH JOHN KOPEC GOLD SEAL LETTER. Cal. .45. S# 18512. This is a fine example of 1890s Springfield Armory assembled “artillery” model from cavalry revolvers recalled from service. Recalled cavalry revolvers were disassembled & serviceable parts were cleaned, bbls. shortened to 5.5" w/ sights repositioned. Usable components were reassembled w/ no attention paid as to matching serial numbers & each of these revolvers tells a story from their individual components. John Kopec wrote a letter of authenticity that accompanies this lot telling the story of each component. The backstrap of this revolver is number 4818, Ainsworth inspected & part of Lot 5 cavalry issued revolvers in 1874. Revolvers in this serial range are associated w/ Custer’s 7th Cavalry & other Indian fighting cavalry units. The cylinder number 8271, also Ainsworth inspected & originally mfg. in 1874. Barrel numbered 8075 is inspected by Henry Nettleton, original host revolver would’ve been serial number 48075 mfg. 1878. Grips are numbered 2384, w/ 1885 date & inspector’s cartouche “DAC” (David A. Clark), the original host revolver would have been serial number 112384 issued in 1884. Each of the other components is detailed in Kopec’s letter. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: John Kopec letter. CONDITION: very good to fine overall. Has matching surfaces from muzzle to butt, sharp crisp markings, strong traces of original blue & case colors. Grips well fit, hand worn patina, edge wear, cartouche light but discernible, date is light & appears to be 1885 though Kopek states 1884, last digit is partially obliterated. Mechanically fine w/ crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Estate collection of the western gentleman. (01-19489/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
