Description

Two days with a wide variety of fun & excitement! Featuring the 50 year collection of Daryl Hemken, with a few other special cars included. Over 60 great cars from the 30’s - 60’s. Most are Post War. Many convertibles. Thousands of parts, automobilia, porcelain signs, pressed steel toys, bicycles, pedal cars, model cars and more! Join the fun and help pass on the legacy of his collection. Others can love these automotive marques like he did. Ann Hemken, Daryl’s wife of 50 years, had spent her career as a educator, but was also actively involved in the museum. So the museum board thought it appropriate for McPherson College, in McPherson, KS, to be a benefactor from the proceeds of the museum auction. McPherson is the only college in the nation with a 4-year degree in auto restoration. McPherson interns, Jimmy Pawlak and Spencer Ice, spent weeks on-site preparing many of the cars for this auction.

1963 Willys Jeep 2-Door 4WD Wagon

Lot # 284A (Sale Order: 289 of 319)

The story of the Jeep begins in 1946. Willys-Overland Motors' President James Mooney announced the "Introduction of a new Jeep Station Wagon." Carrying with this introduc...moretion was the post WWII reputation for Jeeps being rugged, safe, easy to maintain and dependable. Mooney described it as a "peoples car." In 1949 they introduced 4WD. Upgrades in engines, from the Go-Devil flatheads of the '40's to the OHV Tornado of the '60's kept the Jeep power current with the market. In the 1960's Americans were buying bigger, stronger and more comfortable performance cars. But the coming gas crisis changed that. A strong argument could be made that the Willys Jeep was the genetic origin for the massive SUV market of today. This 1963 Willys 2-door wagon, with 4WD, was one of the last "pure" Willys Jeeps. Recently purchased for the Hemken Collection (February 2021), this Jeep comes from the western U.S. in virtually original condition. It's rust free, has low miles and has the original factory 230ci OHC 6cyl Tornado engine. The Tornado was overhauled in the last 500 miles. With the original interior and one re-paint, it's now a classic vintage "peoples" car. It runs and drives well and is ready for the next off road adventure.

1955 Studebaker President Speedster. This one-year-only

Lot # 285 (Sale Order: 290 of 319)

1955 Studebaker President Speedster. This one-year-only Studebaker is fully functional except for possibly needing brakes and is one of 2215 produced. It is a member of t...morehe President series which was reintroduced to the motoring public after being retired in 1942. The Speedster initially had a run of 20 vehicles that were displayed at car shows around the U.S. with buyer reactions prompting Studebaker to put the car into production at mid-year, allowing Studebaker to offer a competitor to Ford's Thunderbird. The Los Angeles-built Speedster was loaded with standard equipment including a choice of Studebaker Automatic Drive or overdrive transmissions, power steering, power brakes, four-barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, "Shoemaker-stitched" diamond-quilted genuine top-grain leather seating, carpeting front and rear, a map pocket (but no glove box), an eight-tube push-button radio, a machine turned instrument panel with Stewart-Warner 160 mph (260 km/h) speedometer and 8,000 rpm tachometer, turn signals, electric clock, tinted glass, cigarette lighter, oil filter and oil bath air cleaner, dual backup lamps, triple horns, two-speed electric wipers, tubeless whitewall tires, simulated wire wheel covers and fog-light bumperettes. List price for the car was $3346 which was about $800 above the top-of-the-line Studebaker President State hardtop. The exterior paint on this car is original along with the original leather back seat. It also has the original wire wheel hubcaps and a chrome trim strip in the center of the hood.

1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible. A member of the

Lot # 286 (Sale Order: 291 of 319)

1950 Studebaker Champion Convertible. A member of the Champion line for Studebaker, this convertible wears the first year "spinner" grille design many immediately recogni...moreze as a Studebaker, though Ford had a similar look in 1949. This car was purchased in 1968 by Daryl Hemken remembering how he and Ann Hemken dated in his 1950 Studebaker years earlier. So this car held some special meaning for the couple. It saw frequent summer use and continues to be a good driver that is both comfortable and reliable. The car is powered by a 170ci L-head six cylinder making 85 horsepower with a 3-speed manual transmission. Just over 9300 of these convertibles were built, costing $1981. Exterior sheet metal and interior are all original on this example and is waiting for its next opportunity to serve as a parade car or transport to the nearest ice cream shop. It's easy to drive and makes a good parade car. You just have to remember that the starter button is under the clutch pedal. It is totally original, upholstery included.

1948 Studebaker Champion Convertible. This Studebaker

Lot # 287 (Sale Order: 292 of 319)

1948 Studebaker Champion Convertible. This Studebaker was in a junk yard in 1968. That's where Daryl Hemken found it. He had the 170ci, 80 hp engine overhauled once he go...moret it back home. Just under 10,000 of these models were built with a $2,059 price tag. Studebaker was the first major U.S. manufacturer to introduce redesigned cars after World War II. Raymond Loewy and Virgil Exner were the force behind the dramatic streamlined forms that set Studebaker on a path similar to the groundbreaking Chrysler Airflows of the mid 30's. Soundly conceived and competently executed, they were design leaders in the postwar market. The 1948 was very similar to the 1947 models that were Studebaker's first foray into new styling concepts in the post-war era. Introduced on April 30, 1946 at the posh Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue in New York, the 1947 Studebaker was indeed the first new postwar car from a major U.S. automaker. So yes, the company's tagline, "First by far with a postwar car" was entirely appropriate. The rest of the nation's automakers, busily churning out mildly facelifted versions of their 1942 models into a seller's market, wouldn't have their new offerings ready until the model 1948 and 1949 model years. Studebaker beat them all to the punch. Studebaker built on this styling while staying with it's tried-and-true powerplants. The Champion line used "A new kind of motoring" as it's marketing theme this year. And it still is...a nice running and driving Studebaker, needing break work!

1957 Packard Clipper Town Sedan. The 1957 lineup of

Lot # 288 (Sale Order: 293 of 319)

1957 Packard Clipper Town Sedan. The 1957 lineup of Packard automobiles was based on Studebaker models using some restyling, rebadging and the addition of more luxurious ...moreinteriors. 1956 had ended Packard production when the engine and transmission factory was leased to Curtiss-Wright Corporation and the Detroit East Grand Boulevard assembly plant was sold. Only two models this year carried the Packard name, the 4-door Clipper Town Sedan and the Clipper Country Sedan Station Wagon. Carryover parts from earlier Packard models included taillights, wheel covers, block letters on the hood, instruments and radios. The headlight "eyebrows" and front bumper assembly were styled for a Packard appearance. A 1955 hood ornament was modified to fit the Studebaker hood shape and the long, wide side trim was designed to be reminiscent of recent Packard trim. A stamped overlay for the lower rear fenders also gave them a body crease line suggestive of the side trim of the 1956 Caribbean. Packard's revisions in 1955 were accompanied by bills for new tooling, technology, and factory expansion. They were costs that Packard could no longer bear alone, so the company's president, James Nance, decided to purchase Studebaker, but this actually brought more problems. When sales dropped to 13,000 cars in the depressed market of 1956, Nance bailed out. The Curtiss-Wright Corporation acquired Studebaker-Packard, primarily as a tax write-off, and quickly decided to consolidate its holdings at Studebaker's South Bend facilities. For the next two years the Packard became a badge-engineered car, built off a Studebaker platform. Though technically a fine automobile, and certainly rare and unique, this type of Packard was unable to attract customer interest. After 1958, the name of Packard disappeared from the automotive scene. Many say the passing was unavoidable, for how could a car with enduring quality and grace survive in an age in which the basis of success is planned obsolescence? If you ask the man who owns one, he's likely to answer that Packard chose an honorable death over acceptance of mediocrity. This Town Sedan was purchased in 1977 from Earl Riley in Des Moines, Iowa and doesn't run but all the factory components are in place.

1958 Packard Hawk. This was the very last year a car

Lot # 289 (Sale Order: 294 of 319)

1958 Packard Hawk. This was the very last year a car carried the Packard name and the Packard Hawk was at the high end of the price range for Studebaker-Packard. Daryl He...moremken purchased this car in 1970 from a farmer in New Providence, Iowa who was the original owner. The car came equipped with a Paxton supercharger, but the family had it removed to "slow it down". It has been reinstalled and helps the engine produce 275 horsepower. A McCulloch supercharger was in the trunk. The Packard Hawk was produced for just one year and had leather upholstery and headliner. The only thing changed on this car is the foam cushioning in the seats has been replaced so it is an unrestored original or "survivor" in today's parlance. Restyled by Duncan McRae, Studebaker-Packard's finances dictated that the changes for 1958 be made as cheaply as possible. Quad headlights, as on Studebakers, were achieved by affixing pods to the previous year's front fenders designed for two headlights. In the rear, McRae attempted to follow the tailfin craze established by Chrysler's 1957 "Forward Look" by crafting outward-canted steel fin extensions that were mounted to the tops of the existing vertical rear fenders. 1956 Clipper taillight units continued to be used. Packards also adopted a low, wide "fishmouth" grille to further distinguish them from their Studebaker cousins. Other notable changes included the hardtop's astonishingly attractive rooflines, very similar to concurrent Chrysler/DeSoto designs. Also, the switch to a one-piece drive shaft allowed Studebaker engineers to flatten the floor, which also allowed flattening of the roof panels on sedan and hardtop models. Packard (and Studebaker) also switched to 14" wheels so most 1958 models are noticeably lower. The Packard Hawk had just 588 built and the last Packard rolled off the assembly line in South Bend, Indiana on July 25, 1958. And, it's still rolling today.

1956 Packard Patrician. Purchased from Delbert Schroder

Lot # 290 (Sale Order: 295 of 319)

1956 Packard Patrician. Purchased from Delbert Schroder in Sibley, Iowa, this is what is considered the last "real" Packard, a company that for years had held the distinc...moretion of being among the mightiest luxury automakers. The Patrician had minor changes that were mostly cosmetic, including the hood bird streamlined to the max. Just below, a crest replaces the letters formerly used with the 55 Series. Front fender headlamp brows are extended forward, increasing the appearance of overall length. Grille is restyled with larger openings, backed up by a mesh panel that was initially made of chrome-plated steel, but Packard quickly switched to a gold-anodized aluminum material to keep up with Cadillac. Front bumper guards are moved outward, air opening in lower valence is enlarged and also includes a mesh panel. Ribbed stainless side trim (aka - Reynolds Wrap) is extended all the way to the taillight. New gas door molding features a concealed finger cove. Window finish moldings are eliminated from top of sedan doors and center pillars, in favor of a wider molding for the roof drip rail. Brushed stainless side roof trim and corresponding sheet metal gusset allow for a more streamlined roof pillar; former circle-vee ornament was replaced with a crest here. Fender skirts and lower body moldings are standard. Trunk lid is squared off, and circle-vee ornamentation replaces former trunk handle. V-shaped ornaments on taillights replaced by a hexagonal red reflex. All exterior script plates are now gold-plated. New electric door locks were available with electric (power) window lifts, but on sedans only. Torsion-Level suspension becomes standard equipment in May of 1956. This car runs, powered by Packard's 374ci 290 horsepower engine and it drives nicely but does need brakes.

1948 Lincoln Continental 2-Door Cabriolet. With a total

Lot # 291 (Sale Order: 296 of 319)

With a total production of 452, this Continental Cabriolet is easily as rare as many of the 40s and 50s cars Daryl Hemken managed to find. He was searching out these coll...moreector cars well before many were even thought to be collectible! This one came into his hands, strangely enough, during the dark of a Saturday night when he found it in Des Moines. He inspected it in the dark but then told the owner he would buy it only if it was delivered to Williams, Iowa by the following day. That Sunday morning, at 7 a.m., he had a new acquisition and the Series 876H Lincoln was part of his collection. It now runs well on a rebuilt engine and is waiting to head down the road, sleek, low and with the top, down! The Lincoln has a 305ci V-12 engine (rebuilt in 1990s) packing 130 horsepower which was not offered again by Lincoln after the 1948 year. Lincoln was in the midst of a total rework of their model lineup so the 1948 models didn't get many updates from the year before (or the two years before that), but the Lincoln still held on to its luxury car designation. This car has push button door latches, power windows and top with dimensions much larger that the rest of the Lincoln lineup. Wtih a hood seven inches longer (to fit that V-12 engine), the car stretched 218 total inches. It sits about three inches lower than the rest of the '48 Lincoln models and has a frame design that "incorporates bridge-floor construction with double box section side rails for utmost rigidity and high torsional strength" according to 1948 advertisements. The Lincoln was repainted and upholstered but needs a new top. And as the Lincoln advertising said, "Your perfect introduction...anywhere."

1953 Dodge Coronet 4-Door Sedan. It's not often what

Lot # 292 (Sale Order: 297 of 319)

1953 Dodge Coronet 4-Door Sedan. It's not often what is considered a "Plain Jane" car has any special significance in the collector car community, but this '53 Dodge Coro...morenet is just one of three Chrysler built to use as a demonstration model for the company's air conditioning system. Chrysler had been one of the early innovators in air conditioning systems after Walter Chrysler had a system invented and designed for his new Chrysler Building in New York City. Systems in the 1930s were bulky and complex so Chrysler went to his engineering staff to come up with a new way to cool buildings, The Airtemp Corporation was born from that effort and the systems were also developed to be installed in vehicles. Some early vehicle air conditioning systems appeared in the late 1930s but until 1953 the major manufacturers didn't introduce systems that were true options. Ford and GM launched factory A/C systems for Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Lincoln and Chrysler put a system in the 1953 Imperial. But Chrysler's system was different from the GM and Ford systems and the company wanted to show the public what they had and why it was better. Which brings us to the 1953 Dodge Coronet Daryl Hemken managed to find in Arizona with just 16,000 miles on the odometer. Chrysler created three demonstration vehicles that were shown around the country with the air conditioning system installed. This is one of those three and it was actually sold by the company to Winnie Hogg in Coralville, PA on June 12, 1953. Chrysler's Airtemp systems utilized a trunk-mounted evaporator with fresh air inlets located on the rear fender, a much tidier installation than the chunky scoops Ford and Lincoln employed to draw in fresh air. The evaporator both discharged cooled air and recirculated inside air through the rear parcel shelf. Unlike GM and Lincoln, Chrysler did not use ceiling mounted diffusers with clear plastic ducts to distribute the air, but discharged the air right into the parcel shelf. To avoid freezing the rear passengers' necks, cold air was discharged through the center register, while the outboard ones were used for air return (opposite from Lincoln and GM systems). Even though Chrysler had a distinct advantage with their Airtemp systems being well known in the residential and commercial use markets, Chrysler wanted to expand its use of the systems into its regular car lines and these Coronets worked perfectly as potential demonstrators. This one-of-kind car still runs and drives and has had one repaint. All the components are in place as installed at the factory.

1947 Dodge Custom Convertible. The 1947 cars were

Lot # 293 (Sale Order: 298 of 319)

1947 Dodge Custom Convertible. The 1947 cars were essentially unchanged because there was not much point in trying to change a car they could scarcely produce enough of a...mores it was. Every car offered up to the public by Dodge was eagerly snapped up, demand was just that high. With the seller's market still going as it had before, most dealers accessorized the cars to the max (and generously padded the mark-up). Some unscrupulous dealers sold themselves the cars, drove them a few weeks then sold them at very inflated prices as "used cars" since car prices were technically still held down by government mandate. Shortages of everything possible, inflation, strikes both large and small, even riots began to erupt across the nation. Despite that, Dodge managed to churn out more cars in 1947 than 1946 with an estimated 243,000 cars (about 50 percent more than 1946). Dodge produced 9500 of these cars from 1946-1948. The Custom convertible was purchased from a service station in Marshalltown, Iowa in 1971 and up until that time Daryl Hemken said he had never seen one before. All models were powered by a 230 cid inline six-cylinder engine producing 102 horsepower. A three-speed manual transmission was standard but this one has the optional Fluid Drive transmission. This car has had new paint and upholstery and runs and drives well.

1947 Oldsmobile Series 66 Convertible. Purchased on

Lot # 294 (Sale Order: 299 of 319)

1947 Oldsmobile Series 66 Convertible. Purchased on September 30, 1965 from a young man who was drafted into military service. He told the Hemkens he wanted to see the ca...morer preserved and it has been. The car is completely original except for one re-paint. The engine does run and the car could be drivable. It has that look that would cause heads to turn on a drive through town! The car has a 238ci six-cylinder engine featuring a Hydra-Matic transmission. This transmission was developed by GM during World War II for army tanks and other combat vehicles needing reliability and performance. Standard features for the Oldsmobile were safety glass, spare wheel and tire, dual horns, vacuum booster pump and cigarette lighter. A special feature of the engine is the down draft carburetor and an automatic choke and fast idle system.

1948 Pontiac Torpedo Deluxe Convertible. This

Lot # 295 (Sale Order: 300 of 319)

1948 Pontiac Torpedo Deluxe Convertible. This convertible was purchased in May, 1971 and is the last in the line of Torpedo named Pontiacs that extended back to 1940. Thi...mores particular car is complete including the ivory steering wheel and chrome facial tissue dispenser. The Torpedo had more chrome trim than any other GM vehicle at that time and this car has stainless steel full window surround, front fender stainless, wheel trim rings and chrome gravel guards. Pontiac, like all American automotive manufacturers, was wholly dedicated to the war effort until 1945. Accordingly, when Pontiac introduced its new line for 1946, as every other builder did, it was essentially a 1942 model with a new grille, fenders, and trim. They did not have to do much, as demand was also at its highest point ever with newly returning servicemen and their families literally buying anything that they could get their hands on. The refreshed 1942 design would stay in production for a solid three years, remaining tremendously popular for each of those years. To many, the streamlined Torpedo design of this model represents post-war Pontiac design at its best. It has a wonderfully aggressive, purely American appearance, which when paired with the famous power of the Pontiac straight eight and the iconic "Silver Streaks" on its hood represents the best of 1940s Detroit motoring. Currently not running.
