Hartford Pope #278 Sharps Borchardt in .25 Neidner Caliber with Period Scope

Lot # 550 (Sale Order: 51 of 424)      

According to Sharps Factory Research Letter, this rifle was originally an 1878 Military Rifle shipped to J.W. Patton in 1878. Patton was Adjutant General of the State of Louisiana. This rifle was part of an order of 60 for the Louisiana State Guard. Patton also was reportedly the great uncle of General George S. Patton. The rifle was then acquired by or sent to Harry M. Pope and barrel #278 was fitted to this gun. Barrel has Pope 8 groove rifling with Windgage front sight and is marked on top"H.M. Pope Hartford, Conn." and "#278"and "Nickel Steel" on underside of barrel. There are two plugged holes behind dovetail of front scope mount. Gun is fitted with 1/2" x 20" tube scope with no makers mark and comes with threaded caps. Case-hardened Sharps 1878 Borchardt action serial numbered "463" with standard Sharps trigger and lever. Tang has a Sharps Long Range sight. Walnut custom period Schuetzen style checkered pistol grip stock with brass Helm buttplate. Buttstock is similar to those done by Berg or Zischang. Forearm appears to be a Deluxe Winchester Schnabel forearm fitted with a Zischang style palm rest. Rifle comes with factory research. Jack T. Livengood Collection CONDITION: 90% original barrel blue with speckling from poor storage. 90% vivid original case colors with screws unmolested. 90% stock finish with checkering starting to dull. Sharp's New Model 1859 Rifle Converted to 50-70 Government

Made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1860 , then converted to 50-70 Centerfire circa 1867. Serial number puts this gun in a Navy order originally known as the Mitchell contract, or possibly an open market purchase. Rifle has 30" round blued barrel with original six groove rifling. Lawrence rear graduated rear sight and pin front sight with Saber Bayonet Mount. Standard Hartford Sharps markings with "New Model 1859" barrel marking. Case hardened action with Lawrence and Sharp's proofs with single trigger converted to 50 -70 caliber center fire. Standard walnut military stocks with three iron barrel bands. Visible cartouche with no visible" DFC" banner on left side. Standard military swivels with iron 2 piece patch box. CONDITION: Blue fading to brown with pitting on muzzle from poor storage. 40% fading visible case colors. Wood has coat of old oil with visible but illegible cartouches. Good bore and mechanics. Made by Sharp's rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1864 with roughly 6,150 manufactured. 30" blued round rifle barrel with pinned blade front sight and graduated R.S. Lawrence Patented rear sight. Barrel is made for socket style bayonet. Barrel marked with Sharps logo and "New Model 1863" with "M. N. M." Inspector Mark. Percussion single trigger action with Lawrence 1859 Patent, Sharps 1852 patent and Sharps 1848 patent with "M" inspection mark. Standard full military walnut stocks with three iron barrel bands and iron 2 piece patch box. Inspectors marks are worn off. CONDITION: Barrel has pitting near muzzle from poor storage with blue fading to plum. Action has traces of case in protected areas with handling areas turning brown. Wood has light coat of oil added with cartouches worn, but slightly visible. Good bore with good mechanics. CALIBER: 52. S/N: C34886. FFL STATUS: Antique.

Barrel has front sight mount with no rear seat and is fitted with 12x Unertl 1-1/2" target scope with aluminum micrometer rings, standard cross air reticle and steel scope caps (missing rear). Blued Ballard No. 6 action with single trigger and blued lever. Walnut plain target stock with rollover cheek piece and brass serrated marksman butt plate. Walnut large beavertail marksman type forearm with adjustable sling stud. CONDITION: 95% plus overall as customized with excellent bore and mechanics and clear optics. CALIBER: .22 Long rifle. Rifle has 30" rifled octagon barrel with replacement front and rear sights with non-original Marbles tang peep site. Barrel has standard "Patent May 26, 1874- Phoenix" marking with breech marked "40 Cal CF". Frame forearm and breech block are all serial numbered "3716". Case hardened frame with standard single trigger. Gun has walnut checkered Schuetzen configuration stock with Schuetzen cheek piece and Schuetzen nickel plated buttplate. Matching walnut checkered forearm with Schuetzen model horn tip. A rare and seldom seen rifle. CONDITION: 95% overall condition as completely professionally restored with light storage marks. Belgian Twist steel 12 gauge 30" barrels with 2-3/4" chambers and cylinder and cylinder chokes. Barrels have extractors and smooth rib marked with Colt address. Case hardened action with exposed hammers marked "Colt Pt. F.A. MFG Co". Blued trigger guard with double triggers. European walnut checkered round knob pistol grip stock with German silver stock plate and smooth steel over the comb buttplate. Matching checkered walnut splinter forearm with ebony tip and latch release. Includes Colt Archive letter. LOP: 14-1/4". CONDITION: Barrels fading to silver with corrosion spots and traces of original twist pattern. 40% original case colors with carry area worn silver. Trigger guard has silver edges with strong amount of original blue. Good bores with some frosting and strong mechanics. Case hardened Trojan frame marked "Parker Bros" with double triggers and automatic safety. Standard walnut checkered pistol grip stock with factory hard rubber buttplate. Matching splinter forearm with friction release. A nice petite Parker. LOP: 14-1/4". DAC: 1-1/4". DAH: 2-1/4". CONDITION: 85% fading blue with areas of plum and silver mostly in carry areas. Traces of case colors with handling areas turning a silvery patina. 95% original varnish with usage scratches around butt and handling areas. Good bores with excellent mechanics. CALIBER: 16 GA. Gun has blued 26" steel side by side barrels in 12 gauge with 2-3/4" chambers, ejectors, raised matted rib, twin bead sights and choked Improved Cylinder and Improved Cylinder. Barrels are marked "A.H. Fox-Special-12 Gauge" on right barrel and "Savage Arms Corp. Utica, N.Y. USA" on left. Breeches have standard floral engraving. Blued squared off action with standard "SP" Grade floral engraving, non-automatic safety and a Kautzky single selective trigger. Walnut checkered factory English grip stock with checkered wood butt. Matching checkered walnut beavertail forearm with latch release. Factory letter mentions all options except forearm and butt. LOP: 14". DAC: 1-1/2". DAH: 2-1/2". CONDITION: 70% original barrel blue with muzzles and carry areas fading to a silver patina. 80% action blue with corners and tang blue worn to silver. 1920 L.C. Smith Trap Grade 12 Gauge Engraved Featherweight SxS 30" Shotgun

This shotgun was manufactured by Hunter Arms Company in 1920. Features 30" solid rib barrels with mid and front white beads. Chambered for 2-3/4", chokes are Modified and Improved Modified. Hammerless Featherweight action with automatic ejectors, double triggers, and tang safety. Break lever, bottom of the trigger guard, top and bottom of the action is engraved with a wide floral scroll design. The left side plate features a trap shooting scene and the right, a field hunt. Fitted with a walnut pistol grip stock. Hand checkering on the pistol grip and capped with an ebony cap. Splinter forearm with hand checkering and ebony tip. Includes Cody Research letter. LOP: 14". DAC: 1-1/2". DAH: 2-3/4". CONDITION: Retains 78% finish with light wear and a few spots of wear near the action. Small scratch on the top left barrel. Stock shows light handling and field wear. RARE Philadelphia Arms Co 12 Gauge Side by Side Shotgun

Manufactured by Philadelphia Arms Co. between 1904 and 1905. Roughly less than 2,000 were produced under this companies name before it was dissolved by Ansley. He then started the A.H. Fox Gun Co. Features 28" solid rib Krupp steel barrels with white mid and front bead sights. Chambered for 2-3/4" shells with Full and Improved Modified chokes. Hammerless Flues action with automatic ejectors, double gold-washed triggers, and tang safety/selector switch. Beautiful intricate floral scroll and blossom full coverage engraving throughout the action. Each side features a gold inlaid hunting dog with "ITHACA GUN CO" above. Quail and dove engraving on the bottom. Fitted with nicely figured walnut pistol grip stock with fleur-de-lis checkering. Gold inlaid shield vanity plate underneath. Matching splinter forearm with engraved push release, checkering and ebony tip. Capped with a factory black spacer and solid red rubber period recoil pad. Two single barrels, one with Full choke and one with Improved Modified choke, both with nickel mid and front bead sights. Box lock action is coin finished with wide floral scroll engraving along the top, bottom and sides. Tang mounted single select trigger and safety selector and automatic ejectors. Fitted with a walnut pistol grip stock and competition style forearm. Checkered pistol fitted with a factory red "W" grip cap. All forearms feature checkering and blued engraved hardware. Capped with an adjustable black rubber recoil pad. Includes an additional Kick-Eez walnut pistol grip stock with adjustable rubber recoil pad. Side #1 has light wear in the fields with small paint chips and areas of discoloration in the outer fields. The perimeter has light wear with a small bend and paint loss on the lower inner flange. The reverse has additional wear in the fields and perimeter. Marked Made in U.S.A. Overall an outstanding display piece with exceptional graphics. 13.5" H x 18.5" W.
