Revolutionary Broadside The Boston Massacre & Lexington and Concord circa 1850's Lattimer Collection

Lot # 579 (Sale Order: 80 of 424)

This lot was originally thought to be from the period. However, now having been examined by several experts who feel that the paper, due to the striations, is of a period...more circa 1850's, possibly done to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Boston Massacre and Lexington and Concord. The document measures 21" long by 15" wide and is the exact copy of the original 1775 document which sparked the Revolutionary War, in particular The Battle of Lexington and Concord. The document lists the name of each person wounded or killed in these incidents and is printed with black ink on paper containing lateral striation which was notably used in the 1850's, according to said experts. This document was originally part of the Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: The document has some light staining and fold marks with edges tattered and having some small tears. An interesting piece of Americana with more research needed.

Historic Surrender Flag From Fort Sumter Ex Lattimer Collection

Lot # 595 (Sale Order: 96 of 424)

On April 12th, 1861 Confederate forces under General P.G.T. Beauregard began firing on Fort Sumter, initiating the American Civil War. The fort was under the command of M...moreajor Robert Anderson with Captain Abner Doubleday as his Second-in-Command with some 90 soldiers, which endured roughly 34 hours of continuous fire by over 3000 Confederates until the fort was surrendered on April 13th, 1861. The flag comes with provenance from Peter Hart who was a New York City Police Officer; who escorted Mrs. Robert Anderson to Fort Sumter on January 26th, 1860. Hart was a Mexican War veteran and great friend of the Andersons and had served under Anderson in the Mexican War. On January 7th, 1861 upon Mrs. Anderson's request, he escorted Mrs. Anderson to the fort promising to be a non-combatant. He became a hero of the battle after dodging intense fire to raise the 33 star battle flag after the Confederates had shot it down during the battle. Texas Senator Louis Wigfall , an avid successionist from South Carolina, rowed out to the fort to encourage Anderson to surrender without Beauregard's acknowledgement. During the discussion between Anderson and Wigfall a white handkerchief flag was raised. According to accounts, Wigfall only possessed a white handkerchief, which was not visible when it was risen and a bed sheet was cut to suspend hostilities while they negotiated. As Wigfall was not a commanding general, a second group and yet a 3rd group was sent out to negotiate with Anderson. Seeing his situation was worsening Anderson decided to surrender the fort on April 13th, 1861. This flag measures 28 -1/2" high by 33" wide and is made out of ground cloth linen warp and weft sewing thread linen (according to textile examination). The holes are from tacks used to hold the sheet to the bed and the flag is attached to an unknown age wooden staff. Accompanying this flag is a report written by Civil War historian and authority Gregg Biggs of Tennessee verifying the in-depth history of this flag. The flag comes out of the Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection, who purchased this flag and other items from a Norm Flaydermann style auction catalog circa 1950. This and other items, Gregg Biggs notes in the accompanying report, were gathered by Peter Hart, who was known to collect and possess many Fort Sumter items. Biggs, in his well written report, cites many historical references and anecdotes verifying the authenticity of this item. There is a handwritten note, signed by Peter Hart, stating this item was obtained by him on the last day he was in the fort. Both Anderson and Hart were welcomed as heroes when they returned to New York City. Research by JSA has deemed this signature, in the accompanying letter, as inconclusive due to the lack of comparable examples. Research was done on the fabric by the Textile Conservation Workshop of South Salem, NY and in an accompanying letter it was found to be of that period and authentic. Civil War historian Gregg Biggs has put together a well researched and informative report on the flag and the events and the people of those days in 1861, which still continue to affect us in modern times. All is included in this lot. Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection CONDITION: Flag has some tattering and staining and comes with in-depth examination letters and certification documents. A great historical lot.

This rare rifle was made by Ferdinand Francis Cook in Athens, Georgia in 1864. Cook and Brothers originally started in New Orleans until forced to leave by the Union take...moreover of the city in 1862. The factory was then established in Athens, Georgia and up and running by 1863. In 1864 Ferdinand was killed by a Federal sharpshooter defending Griswoldville, Georgia against Sherman's March to the Sea. Collectors estimate only a few thousand of the rifles were built. The rifles closely resemble a British Pattern 1856 "Short Rifle". Rifle has a 33" round Damascus steel rifled barrel in .58 caliber with no lug for bayonet. Original front sight and replaced rear notch sight. Breech is marked "Proofed".
