Unique Engraved Colt Brevete Third Model Dragoon Revolver in .44 Caliber

Lot # 608 (Sale Order: 109 of 424)

Made circa 1850, likely in Liege, Belgium or London, England by an unknown unlicensed Colt Brevete gunmaker. Lots 608 and 609 are unusual revolvers and consecutively serial numbered, with one marked "11" and the other marked "12". THIS LOT IS FOR SERIAL NUMBER 11 ONLY. Samuel Colt anticipated his famous revolvers being copied, so as a way to profit from these copies, he supplied these makers with parts rather than have patent infringement lawsuits. He even had his own inspector licensing some of these copies. These two pistols demonstrate his savvy business sense with both having parts with British proof marks, possibly indicating these parts came from his London factory. Both "11" and "12" have cylinders and barrel frames with British "crown/v" proofs with "Colt Patent" barrel markings. Licensed pistols were typically stamped with "Colt Brevete", essentially meaning "copy" in English terms. Another hypothesis is that these markings were used on both pistols for an English speaking market (possibly the Confederacy). Pistols feature full coverage engraving in the Gustove Young style with a floral pattern and "Wolf's Head" hammer scene. Engraving possibly could have been executed by Joseph Delany, who was present and engraving Colt Revolvers in London from 1852-1856, according to R.L. Wison. Another interesting feature of this pair is that both frames are made of smooth brass and have no Belgium or any proof marks. The left panel side of each revolver is marked with "Colt Patent". Barrels are smooth bore with both measuring .425" at breech and No. 11 measures .433" at muzzle and No. 12 measures .430" at muzzle. Both barrels are round turning to 3 sided facet at the frame. No. 11's loading rod latch differs slightly, so it can not be said that these are a Matched Set". However, it could be that the maker ran out of parts and just utilized similar loading rod mechanics out of necessity. Both revolvers have walnut one piece grips. All serial numbers match and it is notable that they have purposely been matched, but this is to be expected if period parts from Colt were used. The cylinders are British proof marked and are 6-shot with Dragoon scene and "Colt USMR" panel marking and stamped with "11" and "12" serial numbers respectively. Cylinder 11's tubes measure from a low of .430" to a high of .449" at loading points. Cylinder 12's tubes measure a low of .449" to a high of .459" at loading points. Pistol No. 11's cylinder is beveled at rear and has relief cuts for ease of turning at cylinder stop notches. These pistols have blade front sights with hammers notched for rear sight. It should be noted that this is the only two brass framed Brevete Third Model Dragoons this cataloger could locate. CONDITION: Both revolvers exhibit a used silvery patina finish with engraving still very visible. No. 11 has some corrosion on frame around assembly screws. Brass on both pistols has a handled, but golden appearance. The grips show evidence of original varnish with No. 11 having a chip missing at base. Bores show dark appearance with some slight pitting. Both have fading but partially visible cylinder scene. No. 11 has good functioning mechanics. No. 12 functions but is in need of adjustment. Unique pistols with some unusual features. Further research needed. CALIBER: 44. S/N: 11. FFL STATUS: Antique.

S/N: 12. FFL STATUS: Antique.
Made circa 1850, likely in Liege, Belgium or London, England by an unknown unlicensed Colt Brevete gunmaker. Lots 608 and 609 are unusual revolvers and consecutively seri...moreal numbered, with one marked "11" and the other marked "12". THIS LOT IS FOR SERIAL NUMBER 12 ONLY.
