Theodore Roosevelt's "Big Stick" Walking Cane Ex. Lattimer Collection

Lot # 628 (Sale Order: 129 of 424)

Some would argue that Theodore Roosevelt was one the most interesting men to ever hold the office of President. Noted as a "Can Do" guy, he was born in 1858 and died in 1...more919. Having accomplished many great achievements. Known as an outdoorsman, soldier, and Statesman, he was the 26th President of the United States. Lattimer. This cane/walking stick measures 37" in overall length with a Briarwood staff capped with a brass tip and fitted with an Elk or Antelope horn handle. (Provenance states Antelope horn, but looks to be more like Elk or Mule Deer antler.) The handle measures 11" from tip to top of staff with top facet marked "Gov Theodore Roosevelt/Col. R.R./Jan 1st 99". This marking indicates this cane/walking stick was made for Roosevelt, by an unknown source, while he was the 33rd Governor of New York. The provenance accompanying this item states that the "stick" was given to a neighbor of Roosevelt's and was always regarded as the original "Big Stick" and comes out of the famous Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection. Provenance: Letter from Charles Hamilton Galleries of New York City, dated May 6, 1977, indicating it's authenticity and date of purchase by Dr. Lattimer. CONDITION: Wood has worn handled look with cracking in the grain. Handle has smooth old patina with cane in good condition.
