The animals around the circle are spirit helpers to the storyteller who owns the robe. The three rifles represent the white influence in trade and the three grouping of feathers represents the trinity (the god head.) As the war in europe spread in the late '30s, the u.s. Military wanted a new lightweight, four-wheel-drive reconnaissance vehicle. Three companies solicited bids: bantam, ford and willys. The bantam car company had the leading contender based on overall design, but willys had the wonderful "go devil" flat-head four-cylinder engine. Ford had some good ideas, too, and there was a pooling of ideas. The final winner was the gpw. The "g" stands for government, "p" for pigmy (a ford term) and "w" for willys. Bantam didn't have the mass production ability but willys and ford received contracts to build jeeps in the late 1940s. Willys-overland made about 360,000 jeeps between 1941 and 1945. By the time the soldiers came home, jeeps were well-known and loved for their durability and "unstopability."
