Greater Nicoya or Atlantic Watershed, Period IV Ca. 300-500 AD. Handsome lidded pottery urn, depicting a stylized human effigy figure. Body is covered with incised design...mores, dual pierced ears, pierced eyes, and chubby cheeks. The figure stands with tripod legs, wearing a lovely beaded style necklace with a face pedant. The head and neck section act as a lid to the urn. Size 10" H x 6 1/2" W. Provenance: ex-collection of Howard T. Knapp (1915-2010), a former physicist for the Space Program at NASA, had a deep passion for armor and weaponry and acquired many fascinating pieces from the 60s to the 80s during his extensive world traveling.

Costa Rican Polychrome Pottery Urn

Greater Nicoya, Papagayo, Culebra variety, circa 800-1000 AD. Handsome terracotta vessel, polychrome painted with red, umber and dark brown throughout. Slightly corseted ...moreneck, with protruding animal head to one side. The critter is painted with circles like spots, small ears, and long snout. Geometric and banding designs throughout the entire urn. Orange on cream slip. Size 6 1/2" H x 6 1/4" L. Condition: Multiple large non-stabilized cracks from rim down side, appears generally sound structurally, chip to foot rim and other minor losses.. Provenance: ex-collection of Stanley L. Kaufman, a Harvard educated lawyer who specialized in bringing suits on behalf of corporations' disgruntled stockholders, died in 1993 at the age of 81.
