Greater Nicoya, circa 500-800 AD. Imposing pottery warrior depicted with hands held at waist, a wide mouthed smile bearing teeth, almond slit eyes. Slits to shoulders and...more knees, as he sits on a single pegged stool. Size 10 1/4" H x 6 3/4" W. Condition: Some wear and loss to surface, loss to right knee cross.. Provenance: ex-collection of Stanley L. Kaufman, a Harvard educated lawyer who specialized in bringing suits on behalf of corporations' disgruntled stockholders, died in 1993 at the age of 81. He was the founder and partner of his law firm Kaufmann & Kirby.

Pre-Columbian, South America, North West Coast, probably Inca Peru 700 CE-1100 CE. Intact framed cocoa leaf bag of fine woven fabric and vertical bands of classic scrolli...moreng in white, reds, and black dyed pigments. The remainder with fine tassels original to the bag and with light fraying to the top left section. Frame 17" H x 11" W, bag 10" H x 10 1/2" W Inca valued coca leaves as highly as gold. They used small bags of coca leaves to relieve symptoms of altitude sickness, headaches, sore throats, and upset stomachs.

Three middle pieces (Costa Rican 200-500CE) stone celts, left most in mottled greenstone pierced to the top as a bead and two more in white marble or quartz stone of avia...moren form with beak faces and pierced to either side for suspension. Stone face in profile of a helmeted figure carved from a hardstone of green mottled color with two holes for suspension at the lower and uppermost section. Two (Olmec 1200-500CE) celts right most middle dark blackish-green stone of bulbous form with and right most lower an Exceptional blue-green jadeite celt of characteristic Olmec form. Bottom left most (Costa Rican 200-500CE or Mayan 500-900CE) pipe bead of a double headed snake in hardstone with old black inventory number to the underside reading (C-266g). Size of largest 5" L. Condition: All include soiling and sold as-is, repair to the double snake bead. Provenance: Los Angeles Collection 1960-1990s

West Africa, Nigeria, Mumuye Peoples carved wooden horizontal helmet style mask with multi-colored ribbed design and a reddish mineral pigment. Such masks were known as g...morerandmothers, or old women, with their orb-like round eyes, grooved hairstyle in relief, and open protruding mouth. These types of masks were used during the Vabong Initiation ceremony. Size 17 1/2" H x 8 1/4" W Pigmented and clay applied carved wooden mask meant to represent a female spirit in a masquerade called Vabo, which appears at funerals and other important occasions. The clay between the eyes have bright-red abrus seeds and a mirrored backing to the iris. The reverse edge is held with wrapped with fibers and rope to the top.. Condition: Wear and losses commensurate with age and use throughout.
