Drawing of "Robed Man" by Paul Cadmus 1904-1999

Lot # 296 (Sale Order: 295 of 449)

Drawing on blue paper in chalk depicting a blonde man in a loosely affixed robe. Signed top right. Paul Cadmus (1904–1999) was an American painter and printmaker known...more for his sharply satirical, often erotic depictions of everyday life. Blending Renaissance technique with modern social critique, his work tackled themes of sexuality, vanity, and hypocrisy with a bold, figurative style. Raised in a creative New York household, Cadmus trained at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. His breakthrough came with The Fleet’s In! (1934), a provocative painting that scandalized the U.S. Navy and cemented his reputation as a fearless artist. Throughout his career, Cadmus explored queer identity, masculinity, and morality, often using his lovers and friends—especially longtime partner Jon Anderson—as muses. Though once censored, his art is now celebrated in major museums, remembered for its daring honesty, technical brilliance, and unapologetic edge. Size 20 3/8" L x 17 5/8" W, Sight 11 3/4" L x 9" W.
