1983 Pontiac Trans-Am 'Knight Rider' KITT Homage

Lot # 225 (Sale Order: 26 of 63)

Super replication of the Knight Industries Two Thousand 'KITT'
  • The original Knight Rider series saw Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff), a crime fighter who uses a high tech, artificially intelligent automobile, the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT)

  • Based on a 1983 5.7-litre Pontiac Trans Am with a four-speed auto box

  • Purchased from CH Auto Corporation Miami Florida and imported into the UK in February 2016

  • Appears to be a very accurate recreation. Absolutely fabulous interior

  • Not UK road registered, taxed or MOT'd although road registration may be possible

  • Starts, runs and drives but sold as seen and offered as a piece of movie memorabilia

Knight Rider is an American television series created and produced by Glen A Larson which was originally broadcast on NBC from 1982 to 1986. The show starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a high-tech modern crime fighter assisted by KITT, an advanced artificially intelligent, self-aware and nearly indestructible car.

The car used as KITT in the series was a customized 1982 Pontiac Firebird sports model that cost about US$100,000 (each) to build (equivalent to about $275,000 in 2019). The nose, dash and other interior aspects of the car were designed by the well-known design consultant Michael Scheffe. We understand that a total of 19 cars were used over the four seasons and 90 episodes, however, 14 of these were destroyed during or after production leaving 5 which we understand were stripped of their interiors. All 5 have been rebuilt and have found owners in the States with apparently one of the most used cars recently being offered for 5 million dollars.

Should owning a replica of KITT be on your bucket list we found several dozen for sale in the US for anywhere between $35 and $100,000, but there is no longer any need to cross the pond as we have one right here. This example is based on a 1983 5.7-litre Pontiac Trans Am with a four-speed auto box and was purchased from CH Auto Corporation Miami Florida and imported into the UK in February 2016. We understand that it starts, runs and drives but is not UK road registered, taxed or MOT'd although road registration may be possible if it could be modified sufficiently to get an MOT.

Sold as seen and offered as a fabulous piece of Movie Memorabilia.

1994 Aston Martin Virage 'Widebody' Volante (6.3-litre)

Lot # 226 (Sale Order: 27 of 63)

One of 26 Factory-built Widebody cars with one former keeper and just 10,900 miles from new.
  • Supplied by Stratstone of Mayfair on the 21/01/1994

  • Order confirmation letter in the file from Stratstone confirms that it was the third new Volante built to full 6.3 Widebody specification for registration in the UK

  • Superbly finished in Buckingham Green with a black leather interior piped in Spruce

  • Substantial service and MOT invoice from Joe Macari in 2011 in the file showing a mileage of 10,486

  • Most recent service in September 2019 at 10,878 miles. MOT valid until 01/10/2020

  • Original book pack and leather wallet plus supporting history file

The Volante (convertible) had been the big seller of the previous generation of AM V8s, so the only surprise was that it took Aston Martin more than two years from the Virage Coupé's introduction to come up with a soft-top sister. The production Virage Volante debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991, a prototype having been displayed at Birmingham's NEC the previous October. Weighing in at over two tonnes, the open Volante was even heavier than the closed coupé, itself no lightweight, this increase in weight being accounted for by considerable body strengthening to compensate for the absent roof, plus the extra complication of the power-operated convertible hood. Electrically powered, the latter was beautifully made and incorporated a glass rear window, complete with heated de-misting elements. Mechanically the Volante remained much the same as its closed cousin, though with a slightly lower final drive.

However, there was no disguising the fact that the Volante simply lacked 'grunt' and from the outset, Aston engineers began working on the problem. Their solution, ahead of the forthcoming twin-supercharged Vantage, was for the Works Service Department to offer 6.3-litre conversions for the existing 5,340cc V8-engined cars. Introduced in January 1992, this package could cost more than £60,000 (depending on options) and offered increased power whilst offering a menu of modifications to the bodywork, suspension, and brakes. Power was upped to circa 450bhp, thanks to boring and stroking the V8 to 6.3-litres, which gave the two-tonne leviathan 'more grunt than a pigsty' and, to cope, huge ventilated brakes were fitted to all corners, along with bigger 'OZ' alloy-wheels/ tyres, all tucked neatly under muscular flared arches.  Most crucially, the suspension was uprated, and a conventional de-Dion rear end was fitted, using Watts linkage/radius arm location, whilst at the front the spring rates were increased.  The suspension tuning was the work of Rod Mansfield, the legendary Ford SVO engineer.

In addition to the wider wheel arches, there were a number of other bodywork modifications, air dams, sills etc that appeared on the large engined 'Widebody' cars and customers with no need for the 6.3's improved performance but who, nevertheless, appreciated the aggressive looks of the 'Widebody', could order the package's cosmetic items in isolation. Aston Martin themselves recognised this demand, building a number of Volantes to 'Cosmetic Widebody' specification but naturally, it is the genuine factory original Widebody cars that are the more desirable and valuable. Only 26 factory-built Widebody cars were ever produced and further provenance with this car is in the fact that according to the Order Confirmation letter in the file from Stratstone to the purchaser, this is the third new Volante built to full 6.3 specifications for registration in the UK.

This lovely example was supplied by Stratstone and first registered on 21/01/1994 to its first owner who lived in Cavendish Square, London which might explain the low mileage. It was finished in the classic Aston colours of Buckingham Green with a Black leather interior piped in Spruce and, as you might expect with a mileage of less than 11,000 from new, remains in wonderful condition. Its first owner parted with the car in 2017 and since then it has been relaxing in a significant private collection.

There is a substantial service and MOT invoice from Joe Macari in 2011 in the file showing a mileage of 10,486 and the documented MOT history is as follows; 1997 @ 7,333, 1999 @ 8,105, 2000 @ 8,685, 2001 @

1962 Austin Mini Cooper (997)

Lot # 227 (Sale Order: 28 of 63)

A delightful fully-restored early Mk1
  • An early matching-numbers Mk1 997cc twin-carb A-series example

  • Manufactured on the 08/11/1962 as a left-hand drive North American export model

  • Discovered in remarkably solid/original condition and repatriated in March 2018 by a Mini enthusiast

  • Subject to an extensive restoration. Fully stripped down, soda blasted and epoxy-primed before being repainted in its original colours. Original floors, sills, front/rear sub-frames and stainless steel seam covers have all been retained

  • Converted to right-hand drive, 997 engine and gearbox sent to specialists Somerford Mini for a complete rebuild back to original 997 specification; new wiring loom and a new Newton Commercial interior

  • Odometer reads 34,711 miles and is believed correct (but cannot be verified)

To many, its designer Alec Issigonis included, the notion that the Mini might have a future as anything other than basic transport was an anathema, and the idea of a high-performance version was laughable. One man, though, saw it quite differently. Racing car manufacturer John Cooper already knew quite a bit about tuning BMC's A-Series engine - he was running the company's Formula Junior effort at the time - and a test drive in a prototype Mini convinced him of its competition potential. John Cooper appealed to BMC Management, with Issigonis' concerns being disregarded and the two good friends eventually cooperated in creating what rapidly became, and still remains, a legendary little motor car - the Mini Cooper. The Austin Mini Cooper and Morris Mini Cooper debuted in 1961.

The car presented here is an early 1962 Mk1 997cc twin-carb A-series example, and according to its Heritage Certificate, was manufactured on the 8th November 1962 as a left-hand drive, North American export model. What its exploits were state-side we do not know, but we can deduce it found its way to a dry State, as it was discovered in remarkably solid/original condition - it still even retains the original 7-inch discs - and was subsequently repatriated in March 2018 by a UK Mini enthusiast. He has treated the car to an extensive restoration, fully stripped down, soda blasted and epoxy-primed before being repainted in its original colours. The original floors, sills, front/rear sub-frames and stainless-steel seam covers have all been retained. It has also been converted to right-hand drive and the 997cc engine and gearbox sent to specialists 'Somerford Mini' in Wiltshire for a complete rebuild back to the original 997 specification. The car has been fitted with a new wiring loom and treated to a new interior courtesy of Newton Commercial, absolute specialists when it comes to early Minis. The original 100mph speedometer reads 34,711 miles and is believed correct (but cannot be verified).

Sadly, unforeseen circumstances mean our vendor must now part with the car and is keen that it should go to a like-minded enthusiast. This is a super little Cooper and would be a credit to any new owner.

1965 Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1

Lot # 228 (Sale Order: 29 of 63)

A well restored example retaining its original shell
  • A highly collectable and coveted high-performance classic sports saloon

  • Owned and restored by a real Ford marque enthusiast

  • A well-known and respected car on the show and club scene

  • Its original shell and good history made this an excellent candidate for an exacting restoration

  • Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from the Lotus Cortina registrar

The Lotus Cortina came into being because of Ford's decision to step up their motorsport involvement in the early 1960s. Their Head of UK Public Relations, Walter Hayes, spoke to Colin Chapman, asking him to come up with a competitive saloon, using the Cortina as a base, that could be produced in sufficient numbers to satisfy the mandatory 'Group 2' homologation requirements, and with which the Blue Oval could beat all comers. The solution was to take Ford's bullet-proof 1500 Kent engine, fit it with a twin-cam cylinder head, pop it into a stiffened Cortina shell, sort out the suspension and brakes and paint a green stripe down the side. The cars would be built by Lotus at its plant in Cheshunt and marketed through their dealer network as the ‘Ford Cortina Lotus’.

It was 'THE' car for many enthusiasts who before had to settle for a Cortina GT or a Mini-Cooper and it also amazed a lot of sports car drivers who were used to the overweight offerings from Austin-Healey and Triumph. The Lotus Cortina earned an awesome competition reputation and is highly prized today.

The car presented here is a 1965 Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1 that has been well-known to the Lotus Cortina Club for a long time. It was bought by our Ford enthusiast vendor in 2012 and was already in excellent condition having benefited from an exacting restoration. He saw the car had further potential, having lots of original features, including its shell, and set about taking it to the next level in terms of condition. He has trailered it to numerous marque shows where it's always admired and often considered a 'best-of-breed' example. The car drives and performs as well as it presents and would be a credit to any collector or enthusiast. These cars are now highly collectable and finding them like this one is getting harder so, if you’ve ever hankered after one, this is almost certainly the car to keep.

2003 Aston Martin DB7 Vantage V12 Manual

Lot # 229 (Sale Order: 30 of 63)

V12 Engine, very rare manual gearbox and exemplary service history from new.
  • Very desirable V12, manual gearbox, DB7 with just three former keepers

  • Originally supplied by Stratstone of Wilmslow on 28/02/2003 in Tungsten Silver with Obsidian leather

  • Full Aston Martin service history (13 stamps) up until 2016 at 43,481 miles

  • Current indicated mileage just over 48,000. Aston Martin book pack and wallet including service book

  • New tyres, freshly serviced and the MOT is valid until early October 2020

Aston Martin introduced the long-awaited Vantage version of their successful DB7 in 1999. Sporting a Cosworth designed, 5.9- litre V12 producing a creamy 420bhp, the car was super-quick and was electronically limited to 185mph. The V12 had a serious appetite for air compared to its 6-cylinder predecessor, demanding a larger intake and other modifications to the frontal airflow were made to aid cooling. Other changes included chassis and braking upgrades to cope with the increased performance and Ian Callum enlarged the grille, added fog lamps, and restyled the valances to give the car a more purposeful look. The Vantage interior leather trim was cut and sewn at a special trim shop at Newport Pagnell, where the carpet and wood veneers were also prepared.

This superb DB7 Vantage was originally supplied by Stratstone of Wilmslow on 28/02/2003 in Tungsten Silver with an Obsidian leather and Burr Walnut interior and has been enjoyed by three former keepers who between them have covered just over 48,000 miles. Included with the full AM book pack is the service history boasting 13 Aston Martin stamps in the book up until 2016 at 43,481 miles and subsequently a further three by marque specialists with the most recent at 47,780 miles in September 2019. On offer from a private collection, this lovely V12 is in fabulous condition and has recently been fitted with new tyres and freshly MOT’d (October 2020).

V12, front-engined, manual gearbox, Grand Tourers have seen mounting investor interest over the last few years and this impressive DB7 Vantage certainly qualifies in that department, however, essentially it’s an affordable classic Aston with 400bhp and the open road beckons. Aston Martin, a V12 engine and a Manual Gearbox. The Holy Trinity

2010 Aston Martin V12 Vantage

Lot # 230 (Sale Order: 31 of 63)

In July 2013 Aston Martin Works Service fitted secondary cat bypass exhaust pipes by Capristo. Directly prior to the sale, this car has been fitted with 2 brand new Pirelli P-Zero Corsa at the rearA stunning Storm Black UK, right-hand drive V12
  • UK-supplied in right-hand drive with the desirable manual gearbox

  • Finished in Storm Black (AML special) with black lightweight sports seats and Tailor's Grey headlining

  • Main dealer serviced throughout with the most recent service by marque specialists Pugsley and Lewis

  • Now showing just over 32,000 miles, this V12 is supplied with a complete book pack and UK V5c

In early 2008, Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez confirmed that production of the V12 Vantage would commence in mid-2009, though with the 510bhp engine shared with Aston Martin's other 12-cylinder models rather than the Vantage RS prototype's 580bhp dry-sump racing unit. Based on the V8 Vantage Coupé, the production V12 Vantage is powered by Aston Martin's 6.0-litre V12 as found in the V12 Vanquish, DB9, and DBS models. Getting the V12 to fit the V8 Vantage chassis involved grafting on the engine cradle from the DB9, while the resulting weight increase and more forward weight distribution was accommodated by revised suspension settings. Boasting a kerb weight of 1,695kg (3,737lb), the V12 Vantage accelerates from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.2 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h).Offered here is a rare manual gearbox 2010 Aston Martin V12 Vantage supplied new on the 14th April 2010 through Grange of Exeter. Finished in the dramatic AML special colour of Storm Black Metallic which has a gorgeous red/copper fleck in the sunlight. The interior is finished in black leather and factory options included were; lightweight sports seats, Tailor's Grey headlining, 700W premium hi-fi with Dolby, Piano-Black facia trim, front and rear parking sensors, bright finish grille, Warm Charcoal seatbelts, polished alloy tread plates and 10-spoke graphite alloy wheels with sports tyres. The car has been well maintained and naturally, has a comprehensive service history displaying 7 main dealer stamps, and one stamp by respected Aston Martin specialist Pugsley and Lewis who carried out the most recent service this year. The history file also contains various service-related invoices and correspondence from its previous enthusiast owners. Supplied with its complete book pack containing all the relevant literature, its battery conditioner and two sets of keys, this V12 is now showing just over 32,000 miles on the odometer.

This is a seriously fast motor car and in addition to bucketfuls of grin-inducing acceleration, the incredible soundtrack resulting from even the lightest push of your right foot is absolutely addictive.

2000 BMW Z3M Coupe (E36/8)

Lot # 231 (Sale Order: 32 of 63)

Only 17,745 miles from new fully documented by a full, main dealer service history
  • A UK-supplied, right-hand drive, 321 bhp, S50-engined car with a five-speed gearbox

  • Superbly presented in Titan Silver metallic with a black Nappa leather interior

  • Only 17,745 miles from new fully documented by a full, main dealer service history

  • Big spec; LSD, PAS, ABS, cruise control, tilting roof and 17” Roadstar alloys

  • Complete with a rear luggage cargo net, warning triangle and unopened first aid kit

  • Supplied with its document wallets, book packs/ manuals and a complete, unused tool kit

Very much an oddball and all the better for it, the Z3 M Coupe follows no model lineage and wasn't replaced when production ceased, but what a wonderful hiccup in the corporate product line this car was. The 'M Coupe' housed the fabulous straight-six engine from the M3 in a smaller body based upon the two-seat Z3 and there were three distinct iterations of the car built for the UK market over the model's short life. Up until April 1999, the car is now referred to as the S50 ‘pre-facelift’, between April '99 and 2001 it's known as the S50 ‘post-facelift’, and the rarest of the three was built between 2001 and 2002 and is known as the S54 facelift car.

The main distinguishing feature is the engine used. The S50 engined car (321 bhp) was built between 1998 and 2001 using motive power from the E36 M3 and the later S54 engined model (325bhp) was manufactured between 2001 and 2002 and adopted the power unit from the E46 M3. Apart from the engine, the main differences between models are the drive by wire throttle, DSC system, and externally, shadow chrome wheels. The inside was as defiantly individual as the outside, featuring chrome-rimmed dials with multi-coloured leather seats available as an option but despite being distinctly different, it was built to the same superb standards as any BMW and was a totally practical everyday driver that just loved to play the ‘bad-boy’ at weekends.

Offered here is a truly stunning 1999, UK, right-hand drive, S50-engined, five-speed Z3M Coupe finished in Titan Silver Metallic with a black Nappa leather interior that has only covered a well-documented, 17,745 miles from new, This car is in remarkable condition, has patently been pampered to within an inch of its life, and could conceivably be the best of the 821 right-hand drive cars produced for the UK.

It was originally supplied by Douglas Park BMW and the specification included a Limited Slip Differential, PAS, ABS, Cruise control, Electric windows, Electric + heated/mirrors, Heated windscreen washers, Power tilting Panoramic roof, Remote locking and 17' BMW Roadstar alloys. It comes complete with a rear luggage cargo net, warning triangle and unopened first aid kit. Evidence of caring ownership can be found within the car's history file which includes the V5C logbook, DVLA MOT check print off, previous MOTs, Experian Auto Check Report, Original BMW owners book pack (Service Booklet, Owner’s Handbook, Dealer Warranty & Emergency Service Handbook, Service Europa book, BMW Management leaflet, Stereo Operating Instructions), BMW chassis info reference specification, BMW Service visit print off, various invoices, a full set of keys and a BMW touch up stick. It was treated to new front calipers, discs and pads at Harry Fairbairn BMW on 17/01/2019, the most recent service was on 05/06/2019 at 17,730 miles and the MOT is valid until early April 2020.

At the car’s launch, its looks certainly polarised opinion, however, even amongst those detractors a spell behind the wheel quickly changed their minds and that quiet respect has continued to grow until the Z3M appears to now be heading for ‘cult’ status. Extrovert and cranky it may be, but it certainly stands out amongst its rather anodyne siblings and being that rarest of beasts, a German car with personality, it’s increasingly sought-after and may well be one of your better investments.

1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom

Lot # 232 (Sale Order: 33 of 63)

Just 1500 miles covered since 1992
  • 34,000 miles, time-warp, genuine RS2000 dating from 1980

  • Finished in Cordoba Beige with a brown interior

  • All the MOT's up until 1992 (30,405 miles). Most recent on 11/07/2018 at 31,714

  • From long-term storage. Only 1,500 miles in the last 27 years

  • Original brochure, MOT's and numerous invoices from the 1980's

  • The distinctive looks mean that these droop snoot cars remain sought after

The ‘droop-snoot’ RS2000 has become something of a legend in Ford circles and, with rallying heritage, was the Seventies equivalent of Subaru's WRX and Mitsubishi's Evo.

It was back in 1970 that Ford introduced their Rally Sport models – the RS range. Originally designed as a way of building limited numbers of homologation specials for serious competition use, it soon grew into a major marketing opportunity, and one that Ford grabbed with both hands. By 1976, when the RS 2000 Mk2 was launched, the term RS had grown to mean something a bit special.

Unlike the Mk1 Escort which was designed by Ford of Great Britain, the Mk2 was a much more sophisticated design that was jointly developed with Ford of Germany. Based on a standard Mk2 two-door saloon shell, the RS2000 used the familiar 2-litre, inline four-cylinder, SOHC, 'Pinto' engine mounted longitudinally in the bay driving the rear wheels. A single twin-venturi 32/36 DGAV Weber carburettor was fitted with the option of a Group 1 dual Weber 40 DCNF or IDF set up. The front suspension used independent MacPherson struts with an anti-roll bar and at the rear, traditional leaf springs with telescopic dampers were utilised. Front-mounted discs and rear drums were used and four-spoke alloy wheels came as standard. Its biggest distinguishing feature was a ‘droop snoot’ polyurethane nose housing four headlamps which gave it a rather aggressive look. The new car was capable of 110mph with 0-60mph taking 8.9 seconds, not too shabby in 1976, and which combined with the car’s distinctive looks and that shiny RS badge, set Ford’s showroom doors swinging.

In late 1978, the Custom Pack became an option and included the following;  Fishnet Recaro seats, full door cards, clock and pod centre console, 6J x 13? alloys, boot carpet, remote drivers door mirror and the back panel around the rear lights was painted black.

On offer here we have a Ford Rallye Sport 2000 Custom dating from 1980 finished in Cordoba Beige with a brown interior. We understand that is has been enjoyed by three previous keepers and the indicated mileage at its most recent MOT test was 31,714 on 11/07/2018. The history file contains an original brochure, an owner's handbook, ten older MOTs up until 26/09/1992 at 30,405 miles and a number of invoices from the 1980s.

1974 Honda CB 750 Four

Lot # 233 (Sale Order: 34 of 63)

  • In 1968 Honda introduced their revolutionary CB 750 Four and changed motorcycle history forever

  • It featured an inline-four with four carburettors, four exhaust pipes, a five-speed gearbox, an electric starter, and for the first time on a production bike, a hydraulic front disc brake

  • Finished in metallic red, this original bike was imported from Sweden in 2017 with just 62,000 km from new

  • It's now UK registered with all import taxes paid and is supplied with its UK V5c, some service records and an original owners manual

  • Although in excellent condition, it may need some light recommissioning prior to use

The Honda CB 750 Four was the first motorcycle to be known as a “Superbike” which rather confirms its place in history as a legendary motorbike. It started a trend of high-performance bikes which featured a transverse overhead camshaft inline 4 cylinder engine and introduced some unique ideas at the time such as an electric starter, a 'kill switch', dual mirrors and flashing indicators on both sides.

It was the bike that most significantly cemented Honda as one of the world’s biggest producers of high-performance mainstream motorcycles with total production figures running into hundreds of thousands by production end.

This particular 1974 version of the legendary CB 750 comes sadly from a deceased estate. It was acquired in 2017 from Direct Classic Imports Ltd of Worcestershire for £7,500 as an original version that had recently been imported from Sweden. The bike is showing just 62,000 Kilometres from new and is clearly in excellent condition all round.

It has had all UK taxes paid and is now registered in the UK and has not been used in 2019, so may need some light recommissioning prior to use. Finished in the smart colour of red metallic it comes with a UK V5c, some service records and an original owners manual.

1965 Aston Martin DB5

Lot # 234 (Sale Order: 35 of 63)

This DB5 featured on the August 2013 Royal Mail postage stamp issue
  • The actual car featured on the August 2013 Royal Mail postage stamp issue

  • Presented in Silver Birch with wonderful original Red Connolly hide and factory headrests

  • Impressive restoration. Full engine rebuild by Aston Engineering in 2013

  • Right-hand drive, 3995cc, five-speed manual, standard disc brakes, chrome wire wheels, impressive history file

  • One of the finest examples of the most famous ‘James Bond' Aston Martins

Aston Martin's post-war evolution took a major step forward with the launch of the DB4 in 1958. Classically proportioned, the beautiful, Touring-designed, body established an instantly recognisable look that would stand the marque in good stead until 1970. The engine was still an all-alloy, twin-overhead-camshaft, six but the old W O Bentley-supervised 3.0-litre unit had been superseded by a new design from the pen of Tadek Marek. The new 3,670cc straight-six developed 240bhp at 5,500rpm and the David Brown gearbox was an all-new, four-speed all-synchromesh design.

Five distinct 'Series' were built as the DB4 gradually metamorphosed into the DB5 which was introduced in July 1963. The new '5' boasted an enlarged 4.0-litre engine which had seen service initially powering the four-door Lagonda Rapide of 1961 and, having proven itself reliable, was subtly modified to suit the sporting aspirations of Aston's new 'flagship'. Equipped with three SU carburettors, the '400' engine produced 282bhp at 5,500rpm and was mated to a four-speed/overdrive gearbox, a 'proper' ZF five-speed unit becoming standard later.

The DB5's distinctive cowled headlamps had first appeared on the DB4GT and the newcomer was the same size as the lengthened, Series V DB4. Outwardly there was little to distinguish the DB5 from the last of the DB4s apart from twin fuel filler caps, although these had already appeared on some of the earlier cars. Beneath the skin, however, there were numerous improvements including alternator electrics, Girling disc brakes instead of Dunlops, Sundym glass, electric windows and an oil pressure gauge as standard equipment.

This very special, right-hand drive, DB5 was supplied through the Eton Motor Group on the 29/11/65 finished in in Silver Birch with a red interior, the colour combination it wears today. Studying the impressive history file it is clear ‘2249/R’ has had a fascinating history having been owned by a number of larger-than-life Aston enthusiasts and looked after by some of the best in the business.

After spending time in Germany during the 1980's and most of the 1990's (there are numerous items of correspondence on file from previous German owners including registration documents) the DB5 returned to the UK in 1997 and was sold by Desmond Smail to a Mr Colin Stone in 1998. Mr Stone is a very well respected businessman, perhaps best known as the former MD of Guinness and Burger King UK. He owned ‘2249/R’ for the next 14 years and used the services of respected marque specialists, DLS Smail, to look after the car whilst in his ownership. At the time of his purchase, the DB5 was finished in Dark Blue and the decision was taken to return it to its original Silver Birch. The car's extensive history file contains details of this colour change and there are a host of invoices and much correspondence on file documenting all the expenditure that has been lavished on this car over the years.

After 14 years of ownership, Des Smail sold the car, on behalf of Mr Stone to a Mr David Irving who owned the car until late 2013. Whilst in his tenure, Aston Engineering were commissioned to carry out a full engine rebuild to a 4.2-litre, lead-free specification. The decision was taken at the time to use a replacement engine block, however, Mr Irving wisely retained the original (the story of this continues later on).

2013 was a busy year for LBH 651C as, after its engine rebuild, Des Smail, on behalf of the owner, organised for this actual car to be featured by the Royal Mail on a special edition of postage stamps produced to celebrate “The best in British car manufacturing”. In the aforementioned history file is an official set of this limited edition ‘British Auto Legends’ stamps that were issued to celebrate the “The tales of human endeavour, boundary-pushing innovation and design artistry in the British Motor industry”.

Having been admired by everyone who had licked a stamp, LBH 651C was sold in late 2013 to the former Radio 2 B

1991 BMW 325i (E30) Sport M-Tech2

Lot # 235 (Sale Order: 36 of 63)

A very desirable example of a very desirable model.
  • First registered on 08/04/1991, this is one of the last Sport examples produced

  • UK-supplied with the M-Tech2 package, its list of M-Sport upgrades is impressive

  • Powered by the legendary 171bhp M20 2494cc straight-six, good for 132 mph and 0-60 in 9.9 seconds

  • With a full book pack and comprehensive history, its full tool kit, and in completely original condition this is a great opportunity for a collector or BM enthusiast

  • Offered at No Reserve, this 325i (E30) is a fantastic opportunity to own one of the best sporting saloons of the early nineties

Compact rear-wheel drive saloons were in short supply in the 1980's and consequently, the E30 quickly stood out as something special, being lightweight, refined, and offering unparalleled driving pleasure. The range-topping M3 is now rightly one of the most sought-after sports cars of the last 30 years and can command in excess of £100,000.

With the success of the M3, BMW capitalised on the demand for more sporting E30s, and in 1986 gave the market the ‘325i Sport’, a 2-door only model with numerous ‘M-Tech’ upgrades from BMW's Motorsport Division. These included an M Technic body-kit and boot spoiler, Anthracite headlining (unique to the 325i Sport), a limited-slip differential, M Technic suspension (15mm lower springs and Boge M Technic shock absorbers) and a 5-speed ZF close-ratio gearbox. The car is powered by the legendary M20 2494cc straight-six engine giving 171bhp and 164 lb-ft of torque, good for 132 mph and 0-62 mph time of 9.9 seconds, decently quick but it's really the whole driving experience that impresses so much.

This example is a 1991 BMW E30 325i Sport (Tech-2), UK-supplied, right-hand drive car supplied by David Prentice (Cars) Ltd to Mr Purcell of Northern Ireland, finished in Alpine White and first registered on 8th April 1991. According to the service records, the car was diligently serviced by its first owner before being sold, in 1995, to a gentleman from Cardiff who apparently only used it occasionally. He, in turn, passed it on to a Mr Watts, a senior Army Officer who was stationed in Germany. All the BM's owners appear to have regularly serviced the car, mostly at main dealers with some specialists, and all of this is detailed in the car's extensive history file. In summary, this smart 325 has been enjoyed by four previous keepers and currently has covered 89,300 miles.

The car is accompanied by a full book-pack, original paperwork and tool kit. This is one of the last 325 Sports built and is highly desirable, eminently usable and in excellent condition. The market for sporting E30s continues to strengthen and this lovely example, at No Reserve will soon be off to a new home.

2012 BMW 1M

Lot # 236 (Sale Order: 37 of 63)

Owned from new by Rock legend Jay Kay. 5,500 miles from new under his single ownership
  • Owned from new by Rock legend Jay Kay. 5,500 miles from new under his single ownership

  • Ordered in the desirable combination of Alpine White with a black Boston leather interior and the media package

  • Supplied with its original Bill of Sale and service records with five stamps in the book by BMW Sytner

  • First time offered for sale. One of the 450 specially made 1-Series Coupes. Rock star provenance and sensibly guided

BMW's 1M was the first of the new generation of 'M' cars to use turbo-charging, and with more torque than the V8-powered M3, the 335 bhp six-cylinder, 3-litre, twin-turbo power unit generates linear thrust whatever the revs, taking just 4.9 seconds from 0-62mph and producing a magnificent howl in the process. With 50/50 weight distribution and that intuitive M-Power diff, the car is eminently 'chuckable' and is the complete driving enthusiasts dream.

This amazing, UK-supplied, right-hand drive 1M has been owned since new by Rock legend Jay Kay and has only covered 5,500 miles in that time. Finished in the classic combination of Alpine White with a Black Boston Leather interior, the original Bill of Sale included in the cars history file discloses that this focussed little machine was also specified with the ‘Media Package’. The car was initially supplied by Sytner High Wycombe, who have continued to service it from new with five stamps in the accompanying service book, the most recent of which was on 04/10/2019.

Being one of only 450 UK cars available, the 1M is already a tantalising proposition for any BMW enthusiast, however, this lovely example, with its single ownership, low mileage and rock star provenance, could prove irresistible.

1983 Mercedes-Benz 280 TE Estate

Lot # 237 (Sale Order: 38 of 63)

This car does not have air conditioningRare estate from the private collection of rock legend Jay Kay
  • A very rare and special UK-supplied 280 TE offered by rock legend Jay Kay

  • Only 30,000 miles from new backed up by prior MOTs and service records

  • Finished in Thistle Green with Olive Green cloth. Electric sunroof

  • Maintained regularly by Jay including recently fitting four new dampers

  • Factory options include cruise control, alloy wheels, headlamp wash wipe and the important rear-facing seats with seatbelts

Between 1975 and 1986 Mercedes-Benz mainstream range of motor cars were known as the W123 series. They are now regarded as having been the best-built cars of the modern era of Mercedes-Benz and were all heavily over-engineered with outstanding build quality and excellent and exceptional longevity.

The range consisted of two diesel and three petrol engines powering either a four-door saloon, two-door coupe or a five-door estate, all gaining in specification as the engine size increased. At the top of the range was the 280E saloon, 280CE coupe and 280TE estate version all featuring the double overhead camshaft, 182 bhp super smooth 6-cylinder engine which was so versatile it was the only engine to feature in the entire range of Mercedes-Benz at the time, including the SL sports car, 4 wheel drive G-Wagen and the sumptuous S-Class limousine.

So this 280TE supplied new by Mitchell Costs Motor Vehicles of Birmingham in August 1983 is a rare and special car. Finished in Thistle Green with Olive Green cloth, it also has several factory-fitted options including an electric sunroof, cruise control, alloy wheels, headlamp wash wipe and the all-important rear-facing seats complete with seatbelts.

It was supplied new to a Mr Showell from Sutton Coldfield and the service book confirms diligent main dealer servicing right up until 2007, although the annual mileage remained very low throughout this period.

Acquired by our vendor, rock legend and Jamiroquai frontman, Jay Kay in 2009, it has been used sparingly by him but maintained well throughout including the fitting of four new dampers as well as regular servicing and MOTs. The very low mileage (for a strong workhorse like this) today of 30,000 is confirmed by prior MOTs and service records and is therefore warranted, although one glance inside the car will also confirm the originality and exceptional condition of this truly lovely Mercedes. There is a strong following for cars of this ilk and from this era and we believe you would be very hard pushed to find a better example today. It's a classic but with all the modern conveniences of air conditioning and ABS, central locking and tinted glass with a timeless and stylish design that has aged very well and still cuts a dash in the car park today.

1988 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2

Lot # 238 (Sale Order: 39 of 63)

A great way into the owing & showing an RS car
  • Originally registered in Spain, the car is understood to have gone into storage in 1999/2000

  • Imported into the UK in October 2016 and purchased by the current owner and a well-known RS enthusiast, UK-registered

  • Left-hand drive non-custom model without a sunroof, no central locking, winding windows and opening rear side windows

  • Commensurate condition throughout for the indicated 47,000 km (29,000 miles)

  • The car has been sympathetically re-commissioned, fully stripped, repainted, with a turbo rebuild and a new fuel tank

  • A contender for RS Concours 'Expert Category'

  • Featured in 'Rallye News', the RS Owners Club magazine, January/February 2019

Based on the success of the previous model, the Series 2 Escort RS Turbo (1986-1990) was more suited to the road, whereas the earlier car was a bit of a 'homologation special'. Many new features were adopted for the Series 2 including utilising the 1600cc fuel-injected CVH engine taken from the S1 Turbo but now fitted with the Garret T3 turbo (water-cooled, unlike the S1), revised engine management settings, lower overall gearing, an improved gearbox and limited-slip differential, a larger clutch and improved KE Jetronic unit and inter-cooler. Suspension and chassis changes included stiffer front and rear springs, uprated anti-roll bars, mechanical ABS and larger brakes. The S2 car produced an impressive 132bhp at 5750 rpm, with maximum torque of 133 lb/ft produced at 2750 rpm, giving it ample performance with a top speed of 125 mph and a 0-60mph time of 8.3 seconds.

The car presented here is a left-hand drive, 1988 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2 which was originally registered in Spain and is understood to have gone into storage in 1999/2000 which is where it was discovered in fantastic original condition. It was subsequently imported into the UK in October 2016, UK registered and purchased by the current owner, a well-known RS enthusiast.

It's a desirable non-custom model without a sunroof, no central locking, winding windows and opening rear side windows. The overall integrity and condition of the car is wholly commensurate with the indicated 47,000 km (29,000 miles) and, whilst in the UK, it has been sympathetically re-commissioned, fully stripped, repainted and has benefited from a turbo rebuild and a new fuel tank.

Now in tip-top condition, this great and now rare, hot-hatch is surely a contender for the RS Concours Expert Category. It was featured in Rallye News, the RS Owners Club magazine (January/February 2019) generating much praise. This superb example car offers a new owner a very economical way of owning and showing these very special Fords.

1972 Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 Custom

Lot # 239 (Sale Order: 40 of 63)

A stunning RS that would be at home in any collection.
  • The Escort 'RS1600' was developed using the BDA engine that was essentially a detuned Formula 3 unit

  • As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened Type 49 body shells, making them ideal for rallying

  • Only 1,137 RS1600s were ever produced, so are now very collectable

  • Meticulously restored car with its original shell. In incredible show condition on the RS1600 Register

  • Previously owned by marque expert and proprietor of ASM Restorations, Andrew Stapley

  • Accompanied by plenty of invoices for parts and labour, as well as a copy of the original buff log-book

The original Ford Escort was introduced at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968 and soon became a commercial success. Ford had, for a number of years, used active participation in motorsport as a means of getting their showroom doors swinging, and the new Escort was to prove no exception. Popular at club level in every discipline of the sport, it was at an International level that the name 'Escort' became synonymous with winning. The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960s / early 1970s, and arguably, the Escort's greatest victory was in the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally being driven by Finnish legend Hannu Mikkola. This result and the ensuing acclaim prompted Ford to produce the famous Escort Mexico road version in honour of the rally car.

One step up from the Mexico, the Escort 'RS1600' was developed using an engine that was essentially a detuned Formula 3 unit designated BDA (Belt Drive 'A' Series). Both the Mexico and RS1600 were built simultaneously at the Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) facility located at the Aveley Plant in South Essex. As well as higher performance engines and sports suspension, these models featured strengthened bodyshells, making them ideal for rallying.

Even today, Mk1 Escorts are still very popular in the historic rallying scene with their reputation for a great balance of power and handling, making them true driver's cars. The BDA engine emits a distinctive and appealing 'growl', which can be heard for quite a distance when the vehicle is being driven hard.

The car presented here is a 1972 Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600 in simply stunning condition. As 1 of just 1,137 RS1600s ever produced, this example was built at Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) factory in December 1971. It was originally supplied by Tate Cars Ltd. in Leeds in April 1972 and has seen just four keepers since that time, with the current owner being an avid collector of rare and immaculate Fords. Photographs in the history file document the comprehensive works carried out by highly regarded ASM Restorations. There are also plenty of invoices in the paperwork for parts and labour as well as a copy of the original buff log-book. The car is recorded on the RS1600 Register and is simply as good as you're ever likely to find.

1988 Ferrari 328 GTS

Lot # 240 (Sale Order: 41 of 63)

A late, pre-ABS 328 GTS, fresh to market for the first time in 30 years
  • UK-supplied, right-hand drive, Rosso with Crema and Red carpets, showing just 27,500 miles in outstanding condition

  • One of the very last pre-ABS 328’s featuring some of the later model’s updates including interior and door handles

  • Fresh to market for the first time in 30 years, maintained and stored correctly with a full service including belts and MOT pre-sale

  • To be offered with original owners pack, service book stamped up-to-date, tool kit and a comprehensive history file

This Targa-roofed GTS was delivered new to Michael Terence Holdings in Jersey on 24/03/1988, supplied by Maranello Concessionaries and first registered in the UK on 1 August 1988. It’s presented in arguably the most sought after combination with Rosso Corsa paintwork and a Crema leather interior with matching Rosso carpeting, timeless and very well suited. Our vendor purchased this example on 14 /04/1989 and has enjoyed the car in fine weather conditions only, always dry stored correctly and has kept it maintained regardless of cost at regular intervals by either Ferrari main agents or highly regarded marque specialists. As such, today the car can be considered as excellent in condition, in fact, one of the best examples we have seen. On inspection the paintwork is blemish-free and retains a deep gloss, panel gaps are even across the entire body, the exterior trim components are excellent and all the glass is etched with matching numbers. The Crema leather seats and interior panels are virtually free from wear as are the factory-original red carpets. As a very late, pre-ABS production model, this example benefits from some of the ‘face-lift’ updates including revised interior and external door handles, making it an interesting and rare variant.

Offered with the important original Ferrari wallet including the original service book stamped up-to-date with the most recent major service including belts and a fresh MOT to be completed prior to the sale. The tool -roll and spare wheel are present and, pleasingly, the car has been fitted with four new model-correct tyres. Also accompanying the car is a rather suitable private number and a history folder containing old MOTs and supporting invoices.

Rarely do examples this good come to market, this really is one of the last of the true analogue sports cars offered by Ferrari. Just pop off the Targa roof panel and set off to the destination of your choice in the early morning sunshine with the wind in your hair and the lively V8 fizzing away behind you – classic Ferrari ownership at its best.

1984 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante

Lot # 241 (Sale Order: 42 of 63)

UK-supplied factory Vantage Volante with ZF manual conversion
  • First registered on the 05/01/1984 and delivered with a factory Vantage engine

  • One of six cars sporting the Vantage engine clothed in the standard Series I Volante coachwork

  • The sister car belonging to Victor Gauntlett starred in the 1987 James Bond film, The Living Daylights

  • Finished in the same colour as the Bond car, Cumberland Grey, and converted to a ZF manual gearbox

  • The understated lines of this Vantage Volante are similar to the later Prince of Wales (PoW) cars

  • Presented to auction with a detailed history file that includes the original logbook, warranties, and past ownership details

The first Aston Martin V8 Volante rolled off the production line at Newport Pagnell in 1978 to worldwide acclaim and went on to be Aston's saviour as, much like its older siblings, the DB5 and DB6, the V8 Volante kept the order books full by conquering the North American market. As the convertible version of the new luxury Oscar India V8, the car had the brutish good looks of an aristocratic rugby player and the interior refinement of a gentleman's club. If the contemporary Ferrari of its day was likened to a 'prancing playboy in snakeskin loafers' the Aston V8 Volante was the solid chap in burnished brogues, equally at ease in town or country.

When Timothy Dalton took over as James Bond in the 1987 film 'The Living Daylights' he did so behind the wheel of the most appropriate car of the era, a V8 Vantage Volante. Bestowing the virtues of its heritage, luxury and power, the V8 Vantage Volante helped ease Mr Dalton into the role of the quintessentially British spy. The car was to feature prominently throughout the film, with the 'Winterised' version eventually falling foul of its own self-destruct button. The Cumberland Grey Vantage Volante that starred in early scenes of the film belonged to the, then, Chairman of Aston Martin Lagonda, Victor Gauntlett, who lent it to EON Productions for filming. A Cumberland Grey V8 Vantage coupe with standard 'Oscar India' coachwork, bearing the same registration number as the earlier screen Volante will return in the latest Bond film “No Time To Die”.

Mr Gauntlett’s car, and indeed this superb example, were two of just six cars benefiting from factory engine upgrades to Vantage specification before delivery as customer special orders, clothed in standard Series I Volante bodies. The upgrade to Vantage specification on this car, chassis # 15321, was carried out by Aston Martin Lagonda’s Special Department in January 1984 in the month of first registration. The increase in power and performance was significant and these six cars retained the slender lines of the standard Volantes without the ostentatious side skirts and front and rear spoilers of the brawnier Vantage Volante. Interestingly when HRH Prince Charles ordered his new Vantage Volante in 1987 he preferred the Vantage engine but with the more understated styling of the standard Volante such as this car, and a further twenty-one Prince of Wales specification cars were produced, which have become highly sought after. It could be argued that this car, with its factory Vantage engine and standard Volante coachwork is the predecessor to the celebrated Prince of Wales specification cars.

Delivered new to its first owner, a Mr T Mitchell of Moorgate, London via Aston Martin (Sales) Ltd. of Sloane Square, the car is accompanied by a comprehensive history file, including many invoices and old MOTs, plus its original handbook, warranty card and fitted luggage. Owned and cherished since 2014 by our vendor, the fifth registered custodian, who re-painted the car from its original Windsor Red to arguably the better colour, Cumberland Grey. A new mohair hood was fitted at this time also. The original Cream leather interior is complemented by matching leather tonneau. The car benefited from a conversion to an original Aston manual ZF gearbox by Aston specialists Richards of England, Lincoln and mated to an RS Williams-supplied short shift kit which gives a smooth and quick gear change. The original automatic gearbox has been retained for the next owner. The Ronal alloy wheels and a Prince of Wales specification, Nardi wood-rim steering wheel were also fitted at this time and both original steering wheel and BBS alloys are also included in the sale. The re-painting and mechanical and cosmetic enhancements were all carried out less

1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom

Lot # 242 (Sale Order: 43 of 63)

A simply stunning prize-winning example
  • In 1980, an RS2000 Custom was an extremely aspirational purchase, with the distinctive polyurethane droop snoot front end and air dam, distinguishing it from any other Escort

  • The RS2000 substituted the diva-ish Cosworth unit for a sturdier 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder, SOHC, Pinto engine, which was mounted longitudinally, endowing the car with a 0-60 mph time of just 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 108mph

  • An original shell, fully matching numbers car, restored to an amazing Concours condition, winning 1st place in the expert category at RSOC Lakes tour 2017

  • Accompanied by lots of history

In September 1978, Ford introduced the RS2000 ‘Custom’ which came fitted with ‘Fishnet’ Recaro seats, full door cards, clock and pod, centre console, 6Jx13' alloys, boot carpet, remote driver’s door mirror and a black panel around the rear lights. In 1980, an RS2000 Custom was an extremely aspirational purchase, with the distinctive polyurethane ‘droop snoot’ front end and air dam, distinguishing it from any other Escort.

The car presented here is a 1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Custom in extraordinary restored condition. The quality of the car has been recognised with many RSOC show accolades and trophies, with it winning 1st place in the expert category at RSOC Lakes tour 2017 – no mean feat! Our vendor knows his classic Fords and has owned some of the best examples in the UK. Importantly, this car retains its original shell and is also matching-numbers, forming the basis for an exacting restoration. The car drives and performs to a similarly high standard and is in, arguably, the best colour for a ‘droop-snoop’ of Venetian Red. Cars of this quality rarely come to the market, with our vendor now having a change in circumstances. If this was your aspirational new car in 1980, this is the closest you can get to owning one today. You will not be disappointed.

1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk1

Lot # 243 (Sale Order: 44 of 63)

The 'British Cobra', a UK/RHD example first registered to Rootes Ltd.
  • The West Coast Sales Manager of Rootes American Motors Inc. set about changing the Sunbeam Alpine's image using the Shelby Cobra as a guide

  • Sunbeam asked Carroll Shelby to produce a functional prototype which was fabricated by Shelby employee George Boskoff and sent to England for evaluation - the Tiger was born!

  • This particular Mk1 Tiger was originally registered to Rootes Ltd. themselves on 29/03/1966, we believe as a demonstrator; it was subsequently sold to a Mr Willey of Streetly, Sutton Coldfield

  • Beautifully finished in Navy Blue with original black leather interior, the subject of a bare-metal repaint in 2014

  • Holley 600 carburettors, Edelbrock inlet manifold, electric fan and stainless steel exhaust system

A muscle car version of the Alpine Roadster, the Sunbeam Tiger was conceived on the West Coast of America, inspired by the success of the AC Cobra - the result of inserting a small-block American V8 engine into the British designed AC Ace. The West Coast Sales Manager of Rootes American Motors Inc., Ian Garrad, realised that the Sunbeam Alpine's image was that of a touring car rather than a sports car and he saw the potential for performing a similar operation on the stylish but rather pedestrian Alpine, replacing its humble 1.5-litre four with a big Yankee V8. Carroll Shelby was hired to develop the prototype and Ford's 4,261cc (260ci) 'Windsor' unit was the power unit of choice. George Boskoff was the project engineer tasked with shoehorning the V8 into the Alpine's engine bay which he managed by moving the firewall back to create additional space and redesigning the rack-and-pinion steering and the exhaust system.

A total of some 7,085 Sunbeam Tigers were eventually produced, including 536 of the now very rare 4.7-litre Mk2 versions which arrived in 1967. The final cars rolled off the lines in 1968, production being shelved when Chrysler took over the Rootes Group, their new bosses unable to sanction a car powered by their arch-rivals, Ford.

The car presented here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive 1966 Sunbeam Tiger Mk1, making it a relatively rare car. Interestingly, it was first registered to Rootes Ltd. themselves on 29/03/1966, we believe as a demonstrator. It was subsequently sold later that year to a Mr L. Willey of Streetly, Sutton Coldfield, as documented by the original registration document. Beautifully finished in Navy Blue with an original black leather interior, this Tiger was the subject of a bare-metal repaint in 2014. As a result, the paint retains an excellent shine and the car presents very well indeed. Mechanical components include Holley 600 carburettors, Edelbrock inlet manifold, electric fan and stainless-steel exhaust system. The interior is wonderfully original retaining its period wood-rim steering wheel. This ‘British Cobra’ is coiled and ready to strike!

1952 Bentley Mark VI 'Special'

Lot # 244 (Sale Order: 45 of 63)

A superbly engineered bespoke 'Special'
  • Inspired by the pre-war Bentley Racers and recently completed

  • Based on a 1952 Mark VI Bentley and built by highly respected Jaguar specialists DJB Engineering

  • Mighty B81 6.8-litre straight-eight engine mated to a silky smooth Bentley gearbox

  • Elegantly proportioned with the engine and gearbox set back and clothed in bespoke aluminium bodywork

  • Lots of engineering details, exactingly constructed and properly shaken-down

  • The sounds, smell and speed of a period Bentley racer

When Bentley was founded in 1919 in London, W.O.'s aim was simple: 'To build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.' His earliest motor cars – the 3-litre, the 4½-litre, the Speed Six and the supercharged Blower – were absolute world-beaters, and Bentley's performance at Le Mans is the stuff of legend. Their first entry in 1923 saw them finish fourth, and by the following year they had crept up to first. Soon the marque was unstoppable at Le Mans – its reliability and performance undeniable – with Bentleys taking first place in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930.

Some of the cars that achieved these feats are still around today and quite rightly command much respect and heavy premiums, on the rare occasions they do come to the market. For a number of years now there have been a handful of very skilled specialists producing cars in faithful homage to these great Bentley racers, often bringing together original parts, new materials and engineering prowess, sometimes themselves commanding in excess of £250,000. These sorts of car should always have a distinct ‘Bentley flavour’, both mechanically and stylistically and perform as closely as possible to the original examples.

The car presented here is in that same vein and offers an owner a real taste of that unique and intoxicating Bentley spirit. The car was conceived and built by a highly skilled engineer, who has fully restored many Bentleys and Jaguars over the years, as part of DJB Engineering in Northamptonshire. This Bentley Special was a long time in the planning and the execution has been a labour of love.

Based on a 1952 Mark VI Bentley, utilising the chassis and gearbox, much specialist engineering has gone into making this bespoke car. The chassis has been carefully modified to accept a mighty straight-8 engine, whilst retaining its all-important ‘cruciform’ ensuring its inherent strength and integrity - a Bentley chassis characteristic - are not compromised. The 6.75-litre engine was sourced especially for the car and is an ex-War Department unit, understood to have been overhauled/serviced by The Ministry in the 1960s. Now fully rebuilt and detailed, it runs and performs as well as you’d expect, having found its most exciting application at the heart of this Special. Likewise, the purposeful rear axle and differential were carefully selected for their strength and to be able to utilise hydraulic brakes. With the modified chassis, the aesthetics of the car were immediately more pleasing to the eye, with elegant proportions in hand-built aluminium. Painted and trimmed to an equally high standard, with a tailored tonneau, this Special is ready to go.

There really is an abundance of engineering and visual detail evident in this remarkable special and it needs appreciating in the metal. Elegant and wonderfully evocative, we feel that W.O. would certainly approve.

1994 Porsche 928 GTS

Lot # 245 (Sale Order: 46 of 63)

A very low mileage, right-hand drive GTS coming from rock legend Jay Kay
  • Very rare and stunningly finished in Amazon Green Metallic with a Carrera Grey interior

  • Just 26,000 km (16,000 miles), automatic transmission, ordered new to Japan and UK registered in 2015

  • Certificate of Authenticity states optional equipment of top-tinted windscreen, sunroof and soft-look leather front seats

  • Offered straight from Jay Kay’s amazing collection this is a desirable, low mileage 1990's modern classic

In terms of the 928, in 1989 Porsche moved the game on with the even more powerful 928 GT, which with a top speed of around 170mph was the Stuttgart firm's fastest production car at that time, before launching the model's ultimate incarnation: the 928 GTS. Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1991, the latter boasted a 5.4-litre engine producing all of 345bhp and automatics were fitted with the much faster responding 'Dynamic Kickdown' gearboxes setting them apart from the previous models. The GTS model also benefitted from a complete electrical revamp, eradicating the problems of past models and in this form, the 928 lasted in production until the model's deletion in 1995.

The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity states that this remarkable 928 GTS was sold through Porsche Japan and registered in February 1994. It was delivered in the very rare Amazon Green Metallic with a Carrera Grey interior and was optioned with a top tinted windscreen, sunroof and soft-look leather front seats.

This remarkable, right-hand drive, automatic GTS has covered just 26,000 km (16,000 miles) and was imported into the UK in 2015. More recently it has formed part of the rock star Jay Kay’s amazing collection and Silverstone Auctions are honoured he has enlisted our services to offer it to the open market. This is a low mileage example in an extremely rare colour and combined with its special provenance, it certainly looks like a very interesting proposition.

1950 Land Rover Series I

Lot # 246 (Sale Order: 47 of 63)

MOT until October 2020A simply lovely Landie with a believed correct 10,000 miles
  • First registered in the UK on the 13/09/1950 to the first of five keepers, all farmers in Southern England

  • Mechanically tip-top, the paintwork is believed to be original and is in a delightfully patinated condition

  • The believed accurate 10,000 miles is validated by its use exclusively on farms and the condition of the paint

  • Our vendor, a gamekeeper and the custodian of small Land Rover collection, used the car for his wedding

  • A local artist painted a watercolour of KUF 762 and a limited edition print is included in the sale

  • Few Land Rovers of this period are unrestored and this patinated little Landie is perfect for family fun

Volumes have been written on the Land Rover's influence on twentieth-century motoring, and similarly, five decades of the twentieth century did much to influence the shape of the Land Rover. Developed by the legendary Maurice Wilks for the benefit of farmers, agricultural businesses and the military, early Land Rovers summed up post-war Britain; innovative, no-nonsense and thrifty, and were built from steel and aluminium now surplus to the war effort. However, the distinctive lines and simplicity of purpose changed little from that famous stick-sketch in the Anglesey sand made by Maurice Wilks in 1947, and as the final Defender rolled past the applauding engineers at the Land Rover plant on the 29th of January 2016, the family resemblance was there for all to see.

Designed to carry bales of straw and faithful sheepdogs, the Land Rover somehow morphed into the ubiquitous, multi-purpose, continent-conquering vehicle we know today but this development owes a significant amount to the clearly voiced requirements of its many owners. Rarely has a British car company, before, or since for that matter, adapted to the demands of its customer base with such enthusiasm. The first Land Rover, and currently the most in-demand by collectors, was built with an 80-inch wheelbase and it continued to evolve after calls for larger engines, in both petrol and diesel variants, longer wheelbases and different body styles.

This venerable example was first registered in the UK on the 13/09/1950 to the first of five keepers, all farmers in Southern England. Mechanically tip-top the paintwork is believed to be original and is in a delightfully patinated condition. The rear load bed shows Land Rover’s continued use as farmer’s workhorse and the odometer reading of some 10,000 miles may well be accurate. Our vendor, a gamekeeper and the custodian of a small Land Rover collection used the car for his wedding and has kept it as a daily runner. It's a bit of a local celebrity and a local artist has painted a watercolour featuring KUF 762, a limited-edition print of which is included in the sale. Few Land Rovers of this period are unrestored and this little Landie displays the patina of decades of use and could probably be regarded as an important 'piece of social history'. How many 'pieces of social history' can be used for a family trip to the pub?

1990 Bentley Turbo R Sports Saloon

Lot # 247 (Sale Order: 48 of 63)

Only 67,000 miles from new and in superb condition
  • A lovely example of these 'blower' Bentleys that has patently been cherished

  • Finished in Graphite Grey over Parchment Hide with Slate piping, Walnut veneers, and lambswool rugs

  • Fitted with a turbocharged, 32-valve, 6.75-litre, MFI V8 producing 316bhp and 455lb.ft

  • Full service history (14 stamps) with recent mechanical attention from a marque specialist, invoices on file

  • Supplied with its tool kit, triangle, jack, spare wheel, two sets of keys, handbook and service records

  • Rare, expensive, stylish and powerful, the synergy of power and class

Based on the Mulsanne chassis, the Bentley Turbo R was built to be a serious high-performance machine and, like its predecessor, this Bentley had a turbocharged engine, however, the 'R' was more highly tuned and a touch more 'sporty'. With Bosch fuel-injection increasing torque levels, uprated suspension, anti-roll bars, and superior dampers, the Bentley Turbo was surprisingly nimble for a car of its size and fitted with a 6750cc V8 capable of 135mph it was a real performer in a straight line too. Rave reviews in the press helped dealers move the Turbo R in relatively substantial numbers - one report by Motor Trend described it as 'The first Bentley in decades deserving of that famous name'.

The stylish lines of these nineties Bentleys look best in subtle colours, and the Graphite Grey paintwork with twin light grey 'coach-lines' gives this substantial saloon a wonderfully low and sleek look. As is traditional with a car which would have cost £110,000 new, the interior is classically stylish with Parchment Hide, Walnut veneer, parchment hide armrests, lambswool rugs, and Slate seat piping.

Supplied new by the SMAC Group Plc of Thorpe Bay, Essex, it has a full service history with fourteen stamps in the book and has recently been treated to an extensive mechanical refresh by renowned marque specialist Clark and Carter of Braintree. It has only covered 67,193 miles from new and has a full MOT. The extensive work carried out in November 2018 included replacing the engine drive belts, air conditioning compressor, full engine service, front discs and pads, rear hydraulic gas springs and sundry items as itemised in the history file. It comes complete with its tool kit, triangle, jack, spare wheel, two sets of keys, handbook and service records.

Unrivalled as a long-distance cruiser this sporting ‘Blower Bentley’, in this sophisticated colour combination, offers remarkable value.

1950 Aston Martin DB2 'Washboard'

Lot # 248 (Sale Order: 49 of 63)

Major honours at Pebble Beach is as good as it gets
  • One of the first 49, Series 1, three-grille, 'Washboard' examples

  • The sixth customer DB2. Delivered new to Australia, in right-hand drive by Brown and Dureau on 14/12/1950

  • Numbers match Aston's factory datasheet

  • Still in its original Almond Green over Dark Green

  • Competition history in Australia during the early fifties

  • Bare metal body-off restoration and full mechanical rebuild by The Healey Factory 2004-2007

  • Purchased by Vern Schuppan in 2009 and taken to the top-level (2010/2011) by Marque Restoration of Adelaide

  • Third place in 'Post-war Sports Cars' in 2015 at Pebble Beach, the world's most prestigious Concours

  • An important car. One of the best, if not THE best DB2 in the world

Making its debut at Le Mans in 1949, well before road versions hit the streets, the first DB2s were fully-fledged competition cars. The model was made possible by David Brown’s purchase of Aston Martin and Lagonda in 1947 guaranteeing the availability of Lagonda’s superb twin-cam, six-cylinder engine – a WO Bentley creation – which when mated to a shortened AM ‘2-litre Sport’ chassis and clothed in Frank Feeley's distinctive sports-tourer bodywork resulted in the era-defining DB2.

The earliest DB2s to fly from the factory floor featured a three-part grille and a substantial slatted vent behind each front wheel which gave rise to the “Washboard” nickname which is still how the early cars are referred to and even the current register of the three-grille cars is entitled 'The Washboard Register'. After an initial run of 49 cars, the design was simplified and thereafter the side vent was deleted and the three-piece grille replaced by a single unit. To quote Frank Feeley, responsible for the DB2 design, in Aston Martin Magazine:

“Anyway, eventually we tidied up the DB2 and got it into production by which time quite a few changes had been made. For example, we had these outlet grilles on each side of the bonnet behind the front wheels. But Lawrence Pommeroy of The Motor said to David Brown that they were awful and looked like washboards. He had a lot of influence with him and persuaded David Brown to do away with them. So we had to drop them but I personally always thought they looked rather nice, and I was rather upset when they were done away with. Another change we made later was to the grille which started off as a three-piece design. This change came about through James Watt who said can’t we save some cost by making it one piece. So I redesigned it to the shape which has become almost a trademark. The grille itself was made of horizontal slots on a very light frame which was just pushed up behind the panel work to fill the big “window”. I don’t really think it was an improvement but we had to save costs somewhere. I preferred the first design actually.”

LML/50/16 was the sixth production DB2 and the first, we understand, to be fitted with a floor-mounted gear change. According to its BMI Heritage Certificate, it was finished in Polychromatic Almond Green with a beige interior (the same colour as the three 'works' cars at Le Mans in 1949) and fitted with a Smiths heater and a Smiths 'Bijou' cigar lighter. It was signed off by the factory on the 1st October 1950 and the following day set off on its long journey to Melbourne, Australia where Aston Martin agents, Brown and Dureau, had a customer waiting. After the import documentation had been completed and the car prepared for sale, it was duly registered XPG 833 and delivered to its first owner, a Mr WH (Tony) Luxton of Dundenory, Victoria on the 14/12/50 just in time for Christmas.

Tony Luxton obviously enjoyed a bit of competitive motoring and there are written records and photographs of the car competing in The Victorian Trophy in November 1951 at Ballarat Airfield, the Rob Roy hill climb on 29/01/1951 (demonstration run) and the Argus Cup on 18/03/1956 where it placed 15th. Within the history file are a copy of Australian Motor Sports magazine and various photographs, results sheets etc. Also within that file is some limited service information confirming that at various times between March 1951 and June 1953, Brown and Dureau carried out work to the Aston including the N/S rear shock absorber, two front springs, a broken push rod, windscreen wiper repair, water temperature gauge, and sundry oil leaks.

1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Roadster

Lot # 249 (Sale Order: 50 of 63)

We believe this not to be a matching engine number carA beautifully restored original UK supplied right-hand drive Roadster that's as 'pretty as a picture'.
  • 32 years current ownership and just three owners in total

  • Ground up, nut and bolt restoration by XK Engineering completed in 1992

  • Built around a Martin Robey System Three monocoque, bonnet, boot lid and doors. Stainless wire wheels

  • Stainless steel exhaust, 4.2 gearbox, servo-assisted 4.2 brakes, Kenlowe fan, electronic ignition, and a semi-sealed cooling system

  • Really lovely Series 1, as nice as you'll find

Just as in their world-beating D-Types, Jaguar's E-Type was based around a monocoque tub forming the main body/chassis structure whilst a tubular spaceframe extended forwards to support the engine. The early cars, subsequently known as the Series 1, were initially fitted with the triple SU carburetted, 3.8-litre, six-cylinder Jaguar XK6 engine from the XK150S mated to a Moss (EB) 4-speed gearbox. Developed from that of the original XK120 sports car and refined in the racing D-Type, the double-wishbone, independent front suspension was mounted on the forward subframe. At the rear, the E-Type's suspension broke new ground for a large-capacity sports car, being independent at a time when most of its major rivals relied on the traditional live rear axle. Dunlop disc brakes were fitted to all four wheels; those at the rear being mounted inboard alongside the differential to reduce un-sprung weight.  With a claimed 265 horsepower available, the E-Type's performance furthered the standards set by the preceding XK models, partly because it weighed around 500lbs less than the XK150 but mainly because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used the experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.

The car's Heritage Certificate confirms that this lovely, right-hand drive, E-Type Roadster left the production line on 29/06/1962, finished in Carmen Red with Black trim and a black soft top, and bound for Henlys of London. In addition, the green log book tells us that it was first registered on the 29th August of that year and the car's lucky first owner was a John Stephen Hinely in the lovely Devon town of Brixham. One more owner followed Mr Hinely before 5679 HJ began the second half of its life some 32 years ago on 19/05/1987 when it was purchased by our vendor. He made the decision that he was going to keep the car for the foreseeable future and a full restoration was in order.

In 1987, it was entrusted to Martin Robey Engineering Ltd. who for many years have been acknowledged as one of the major players in the manufacture and supply of parts for Classic Jaguars. Their unique bodybuilding facility for E-Type Jaguars is world-renowned and they have been responsible for the restoration of some very important E-Types including 77 RW (the first production E-Type) and HDU 555N (the last car ever), both on behalf of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT). A 'System Three' rebuild was chosen and this included a completely new Monocoque (body shell), new bonnet, boot lid and doors. A new bulkhead is normally part of a System Three build but in this case, our vendor chose, in the interest of originality, to utilise the existing bulkhead which was shot blasted and prepared for reassembly. The car was then transferred to XK Engineering in Coventry to work their legendary magic and complete the restoration. There is an invoice in the file from Coventry Engine Components for pistons and liners so presumably, the engine benefited from a top-end rebuild at the same time.

Mechanical/electrical upgrades to E-Types are the norm these days and in fact, often enhance the value. 5679 HJ has been fitted with a later 4.2 gearbox, servo-assisted 4.2 brakes, a Kenlowe fan, electronic ignition, a semi-sealed cooling system, external fuel pump, stainless steel exhaust, and stainless-steel wire wheels. It was then superbly painted in the original Carmen Red, fully retrimmed in black with red piping, and fitted with a new Mohair hood. It was Waxoyled underneath before being returned to our delighted vendor. There is a photograph album with the car full of images of the rebuild. Our caring vendor insists that, since its return from restoration, he has never used it on salty roads and only taken it out on sunny days. The speedometer failed in 2006 and was recalibrated and currently reads 10,750 miles.

Recent maintenance (August 2019) has included a replacement ball-joint gaiter
