1966 Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur

Lot # 325 (Sale Order: 26 of 132)

  • Initially registered to the first of three owners on the 25/03/1966

  • One of the final S-Series-derived Bentleys before the introduction of the T1

  • Believed to be one of just 100 S3 Continental coachbuilt by H.J. Mulliner

  • Showing an odometer reading of 46,667 miles (atoc) and last MOT'd in 2009

  • This car has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again

Introduced in 1955, the Bentley S-Type and equivalent Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud saloons were thoroughly modern, spacious, comfortable, quiet and powerful. In production for 10 years, they were the final series-production coach-built cars from Crewe.

Building on the legendary status of the ground-breaking R-Type Continental, Bentley soon announced a two-door S-Type to be available as a stunning drophead coupé by Park Ward and a desirable and sporting ‘fastback’ by H.J. Mulliner.

These cars were fast – thanks to aluminium coachwork, a raised compression ratio and longer final drive – and once again found favour with the super-rich of the day. It took two years before the company relented to customer demand for the pace and exclusivity of the Continental combined with the practicality of four doors. H.J. Mulliner of NW London created a superb Continental saloon, subsequently titled ‘Flying Spur’ after the Clan Johnstone crest of Mulliner’s then managing director, Harry Talbot Johnstone. The first car was on the road in May 1957 and deliveries commenced with a pair exported to the USA just two months later.

Facing competition from across the Atlantic, in August 1959 Rolls-Royce announced a new, 6,230cc V8. The light alloy unit weighed the same as the outgoing ’six but produced significantly more power, perhaps as much as 25%. The new S2 Continentals – only ever fitted with automatic gearboxes – were faster and even more refined than ever. At the same time, making use of the more compact profile of the new engine, the distinctive radiator shell was lowered and slightly raked forward.

The Bentley S3, introduced in October 1962, took this process of modernisation one step further. More than simply a twin-headlamp face-lift, S3s featured a raft of other changes including another 1.5in taken off the height of the radiator, which was raked further to aid visibility. All S3 engines had bigger, 2in SU carburettors and this modification, together with raised compression, gave the cars an edge in performance, particularly above 60mph. For the first time as standard, the front seats were individual, rather than a single bench.

One of the last cars built, this S3 Flying Spur was initially registered on the 25th March 1966 to the first of just three UK owners and has been significantly restored in the intervening years. Showing an odometer reading of 47,050 miles, at the time of cataloguing, and last MOT'd in 2009 this car was purchased in 2014 and has formed a part of a large collection which included some historically significant Bentley R-Type Continentals and S-series drophead-coupes. Although stored correctly and presenting well, the car hasn’t had much in the way of maintenance or servicing and as such is sold as a “non-runner”. We would caution any buyer to treat the car to a thorough going over upon delivery.

In recent years this car has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car.

1966 Triumph TR4A IRS

Lot # 327 (Sale Order: 28 of 132)

  • A UK-market example with just four previous keepers, accompanied by numerous invoices and a Heritage Certificate

  • The 4A debuted in 1965 and introduced an all-new independent rear suspension system (IRS)

  • It combined a modern Michelotti-designed body with the chassis of the previous TR3A

  • The 2138cc, TR3A engine continued offering a top speed of almost 110 mph with overdrive

  • The four-cylinder TRs are among the easiest of post-war classic sports cars to own and maintain being supported by a multitude of component suppliers and other specialists

  • This car has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again

Produced between 1961 and 1967, the Triumph TR4 combined a new, modern, and aggressive body design by famed Italian stylist, Giovanni Michelotti, with the basic chassis of the previous TR3A. The TR4 also improved passenger comfort with wind-up windows, face-level ventilation, and an optional hardtop. When equipped with the optional overdrive, the TR4 was good for a top speed of almost 110mph.

Following on from the TR4, the new TR4A was phased in smoothly at the beginning of 1965 and introduced an all-new independent rear suspension system (IRS), which provided exceptional rear-wheel camber control with excellent wheel travel while softer springs improved the ride quality. Having six universal joints, three prop shafts and two trailing arms, the system was appreciatively more expensive than the previous live axle arrangement (dealers in the US reacted uncomfortably to the new design on cost grounds; to appease them, Triumph actually built the TR4A in two forms, one with a live axle primarily for the US and the TR4A IRS for other markets where the price was less sensitive). The press was happy to see an all-independent car, and Triumph was pleased to be the first British car manufacturer to have all-independent suspensions under every car in their line-up. At the Sebring 12 Hours in 1966, ample proof of the validity of the IRS was provided when three IRS-equipped TR4As achieved a remarkable 1-2-3 class victory.

Body production changes for the TR4A were a new grille, decoration and badging, and a radically different chassis (designed to accept the new semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension), plus the introduction of an up-rated version of the 2138cc Vanguard unit, now with a better cylinder head breathing through a new exhaust, giving 104bhp at 4,700rpm. Other changes were new decoration, badging, sidelights and chrome trim along the door/wings, a wooden dash, and better seats. The hood too was revised with proper catches at the front, which ensured it would stay on, unlike the pitifully poor TR4 hood.

The car presented here is UK-supplied, right-hand drive 1966 Triumph TR4A dating from the 6th April 1966 and sent to Puttocks Ltd. of Guildford for sale. With only four previous keepers, this 4A has led a well-cared-for life in the hands of genuine enthusiasts immediately evident by the accompanying history file showing much expenditure on maintenance and upkeep over the years. A BMC Heritage Trust Certificate is also present and evidence that at least one previous owner was a member of the TR Register. A UK-market example is relatively rare and the most desirable, giving the new owner the opportunity to step straight into a very well-regarded British classic.

In recent years, this car has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car.

You can now book a one-to-one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. Please contact Joe on 07779 082707 / joe@silverstoneauctions.com to secure your appointment or to discuss the car in more detail. 1948 Alvis Duncan 2-Door Coupe

Lot # 328 (Sale Order: 29 of 132)

  • One of only 27 produced in 1947/1948

  • Manufactured by Ian Duncan, an aeronautical engineer

  • Only a handful are thought to still exist

  • Once recommissioned, this lovely old Alvis will be welcomed at all motoring events

  • This car has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again

  • NB: The number plate in the pictures is not included in the sale

Produced in 1947/8 by Ian Duncan, an aeronautical engineer, the Duncan Alvis was built utilising an Alvis TA 14 chassis and running gear. Weighing in at far less, 2½ tons to be exact, than a regular TA14, the performance, at the time, was spritely compared to its larger sibling and was a much-admired motor vehicle when out on the road, in fact, the four-cylinder engine was reputedly good for a top speed of 75 mph and would cruise happily at 65 mph, with the downside being that in monetary terms, it cost almost twice the amount of the TA14!

The example on offer here was first registered in 1948, finished in black with a tan interior it has formed part of a large collection in recent years and has unfortunately sustained some minor damage to the offside rear quarter. However, the rarity of this particular Alvis, being one of only 27 produced, means that it is a desirable item and with an amount of TLC will be something that will be welcomed at motoring events far and wide. It should be noted that during its time within the collection it has received little use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car.

2001 Ferrari 456M GTA

Lot # 329 (Sale Order: 30 of 132)

  • UK-supplied, right-hand drive 456 Modificata Automatic. Just 14,318 miles (atoc) from new

  • The definitive Grand Tourer - fast yet practical, front-engined, 436bhp, 5.5-litre V12

  • Well presented in Azzuro California with light tan leather and dark blue carpets

  • Most recent MOT dated 2013 but appears to have been stored correctly since

  • This car has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. Will require a degree of mechanical recommissioning, offered as a non-runner

You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. Please contact us on 01926 691 141 to secure your appointment or steven@silverstoneauctions.com to discuss the car in more detail. The health and safety of both our customers and team remains the utmost priority, we are therefore operating to strict COVID-19 guidelines and full instructions for arrival and inspection protocols will be given when making your appointment.

Powered by what was essentially a detuned version of the engine powering the 550 and 575, the new 5.5-litre V12 unleashed no less than 436 bhp and, except for the F40, the 456 was the most powerful road car developed by Ferrari up to that point. Pininfarina worked its magic on the 456 to create a subtly beautiful curvaceous body contrasting with the hard edges of its predecessor. Aerodynamically efficient, the 456 remained stable up to its maximum speed of around 190 mph. Acclaimed on its debut, the 456's styling has not dated and is a tribute to Pininfarina's vision in creating one of most beautiful vehicle designs of modern times. The 'Modificata' 456 M appeared in 1998, starting with chassis number 109589 and it incorporated a number of changes, including improvements to the aerodynamics and cooling. The interior, still featuring Connolly Leather, was also freshened up with new seats and other detailing. The updated 456M, which was the last Ferrari model to use pop-up headlamps, was replaced in 2004 by the 612 Scaglietti.

Offered here is a UK supplied, right-hand drive 2001 Ferrari 456M GTA with just 14,319 miles displayed on the speedometer at the time of cataloguing. Presented in a beautiful colour combination of Azzuro California with light tan leather and dark blue carpets. This particular example formed part of a significant private collection and appears to have been stored correctly over the years however may not have been used for some time. Consequently, the Ferrari is offered ‘as is’ and should be considered a non-runner. The last MOT expired on 7th March 2013 and before any attempt is made to start this car we would suggest a thorough inspection, the Cam-belts are replaced and all fluids changed as a minimum.

Guided accordingly, this is an exciting opportunity to recommission this wonderful GT which, with all the work completed will provide its new owner with many years of enjoyment.

In recent years this motorcar has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use, an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed either in person or by a trusted third party, please contact our office to arrange an appointment.

1968 Bentley T MPW Two-Door Saloon

Lot # 331 (Sale Order: 32 of 132)

  • Built in 1968 with coachwork by H.J. Mulliner Park Ward Ltd, London

  • One of just 98 T-Series Coupes, far rarer than the Rolls-Royce Corniche Coupe

  • Beautifully restored and finished in black with beige leather

  • The odometer currently reads 88,500 miles (atoc). Last MOT'd in 2014

  • This car has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again

Rolls-Royce's adoption of unitary construction for its new Silver Shadow and T-Series Bentley necessitated the reorganisation of in-house coachbuilder H J Mulliner, Park Ward to meet the challenge of producing new designs on the Shadow floorpan. The variety of body styles offered was limited to just two - a two-door saloon or similar drophead coupé - the former arriving in March 1966 and the latter in September the following year. Some of the frontal panels were shared with the standard four-door saloon, but otherwise, the new bodyshells were unique, featuring a distinctive dipping upper wing line with parallel crease, and revised, more rounded posterior.

Despite a price some 50% greater than the standard saloon's, demand was strong right from the start, a state of affairs that resulted in the introduction of the outwardly similar Corniche in 1971. At this time, the Bentley marque's image suffered from its not being sufficiently differentiated from that of Rolls-Royce, a situation that would not be remedied until the introduction of the Mulsanne Turbo in the 1980s. The result was greatly reduced sales, making a Bentley of this period a much rarer car than the equivalent Rolls-Royce. For example between 1967 and 1971, 571 Mulliner, Park Ward-bodied Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow two-door saloons were manufactured compared to a mere 98 of the Bentley version! Today, however, the revival of the Bentley marque has seen a commensurate upsurge in demand for these rare and exclusive T-Series models.

Much rarer and arguably far more handsome than the Rolls-Royce version, this beautiful Bentley T-series two-door saloon was registered on the 15th November 1968 to the first of five former keepers. It was treated to a colour change in 2003 from maroon to a more traditional black. The odometer read 88,500 miles, at the time of cataloguing, and it was last MOT'd in 2014. The car was purchased in 2014 and has formed a part of a large collection which included some historically significant Bentley R-Type Continentals and S-series Drophead-Coupes. Although stored correctly and continuing to present very well, the car hasn’t had much in the way of maintenance or servicing and consequently is being sold as a “non-runner”. We would caution any buyer to treat the car to a thorough going over upon delivery.

1953 Alvis TB21 Tourer

Lot # 332 (Sale Order: 33 of 132)

  • One of only 31. Thought to be the 8th from last TB Tourer to be manufactured

  • 2993cc, OHV, seven-bearing, straight-six. Manual gearbox

  • Finished in Porcelain White with a white-piped red hide interior

  • Original dashboard in red with a cream Bakelite wheel and cream instrument faces

  • The cutaway doors are rear-hinged and the windscreen can be folded flat

  • Only three registered keepers with the DVLA

  • This car has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again

The TA21 was Alvis' last 'clean sheet' car design to reach production. The newcomer sought to move the marque back into a more expensive area of the market than its predecessor, the immediate post-war TA14, but remained faithful to many of the company's tried and tested engineering practices. Consequently, it retained independent front suspension on a massive cross member mounted to a rigid box-section chassis frame with leaf-sprung rear suspension, though there were telescopic dampers all round and hydraulic brakes, twin-leading shoe at the front, made a welcome appearance. To keep the 2993cc OHV seven-bearing, straight-six engine silent, light springs held the pushrods in permanent contact with the rockers. In the same way that Alvis had offered an open two-seater version of the TA14, it commissioned AP Metalcraft of Coventry to perform the same conversion on the TA21 chassis, creating the TB21, though it dropped the controversial grille used on the TB14 in favour of the traditional Alvis frontage. In keeping with its sporting pretensions, the cutaway doors were rear-hinged and the windscreen could be folded flat. As the car was lighter than the TA21 the final drive ratio was raised from 4.09:1 to 3.77:1, helping to increase the top speed to 95mph and at the same time improving economy. But its high price of £1,598 kept the car exclusive and only 31 were built between 1951 and 1953.

This particular manual gearbox TB21 Tourer left the factory towards the end of production and is thought to be the eighth from last to be manufactured. Finished in, we believe, Porcelain White with a red hide interior and with only three former keepers registered with the DVLA, this particular TB provides interested parties with an opportunity to acquire an elegant 50s Sports Tourer, rarely available on the open market.

In recent years the Alvis has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car.

1992 Jaguar XJ220

Lot # 333 (Sale Order: 34 of 132)

  • Left-hand drive, delivered new to a Mr Jean Blaton of Belgium on the 14/12/1992

  • No. 97 is presented in Silverstone Green Metallic with a beige interior

  • With 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, the XJ220 was indisputably the fastest road car on the planet

  • Only 22,699 km covered, very competitively estimated, and now ready to thrill its next owner

  • NB This XJ220 has formed part of a large collection with little or no use. An element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again

It was at the 1988 British Motor Show in Birmingham, appropriately, that the sensational Jaguar XJ220 concept prototype was first revealed to the public and, as expected, orders and the required £50,000 deposits flooded in from all corners of the world. The original concept was for a V12 engined car with a six-speed gearbox and four-wheel drive priced at just under £300,000. However, some four years later when production commenced, the XJ220 had become a two-wheel drive, twin turbo V6 with a five-speed box on offer at £470,000. Predictably many of the 1,500 option holders tried to cancel their purchase blaming the massive change in specification but the collapse in values of collectable supercars at the time was probably more of a factor. Eventually, the car found 275 buyers and the others don't know what they missed. Producing an impressive 549bhp at 7,000rpm and 473lb.ft at 4,500rpm and now slightly shorter by some ten inches courtesy of the smaller dimensions of the V6 engine against the bulky V12, but still with a not inconsiderable girth of six feet and six inches, the XJ220 proved more than capable of reaching its target maximum speed. In 1992 at the Italian Nardo test track Formula One and sportscar ace, Martin Brundle, recorded 212.3mph around the banking in standard trim and 217.1mph with the catalytic converters disconnected, the latter speed equivalent to 223mph on a straight road.

With 0-60mph acceleration in a brutal 3.5 seconds, the XJ220 was indisputably the fastest road car on the planet at that time and, thanks to racing developed inboard wishbone suspension and huge ventilated disc brakes with four-piston calipers, it held the road beautifully and stopped equally as well. Production of the car began the following year in a purpose-built factory at Bloxham in Oxfordshire with the first cars delivered in July to, amongst other well-known names, Elton John, Baron Hamer of Alford and the Sultan of Brunei. On the circuits, the Jaguar also proved highly effective. In the competition version, the XJ220C, another sports car ace, Win Percy, took victory on the car's race debut in the BRDC National Sports GT Challenge. In the 1993 Le Mans 24 Hours John Nielsen, David Brabham and David Coulthard finished first in the GT class, though only for their XJ220C to be subsequently disqualified over a spurious technical infringement.

Finished in Silverstone Green Metallic with a Grey interior this, left-hand drive, XJ220 was first delivered to a Mr. Jean Blaton of Belgium on the 14th December 1992 and has covered 22,699 kilometres, or 14,100 miles, from new. In recent years the XJ220 has formed part of a large collection and as such has received little or no use and an element of recommissioning is to be expected to return it to the road once again. Your inspection pre-sale is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate the potential of this rarely offered motor car.

  • Only 70,024 miles indicated at the time of cataloguing

With E-Type sales falling and an outright ban on convertibles looming in its most important export market - the USA - Jaguar addressed the problem of defining its successor as the 1960s drew to a close. Codenamed 'XJ27', the car that would evolve into the XJ-S was styled by Malcolm Sayer, the man responsible for the E-Type, under the fatherly eye of Jaguar boss, Sir William Lyons. Conceived as a comfortable and long-legged Grand Routier, rather than an out-and-out sports car like the preceding E-Type, the XJ-S made use of the Jaguar XJ6/XJ12 saloon platform and running gear. Shorter in the wheelbase than its saloon siblings, the new model debuted at the 1976 Frankfurt Motor Show as a V12-powered coupé, with six-cylinder and soft-top versions following in the 1980s, the expected ban on open cars having failed to materialise. One of the most important developments in the evolution of the V12-powered XJ-S was the introduction of the HE (High Efficiency) engine in 1981. Incorporating a new design of cylinder head, this more fuel-efficient unit enabled the top-of-the-range XJ-S to meet tighter worldwide emissions legislation. The XJ-S would go on to become Jaguar's best-selling sports car ever, well in excess of 115,000 being made up the time production ceased in April 1996.

This particular XJS Convertible comes from a private vendor who has enjoyed the car as the English weather has allowed over the last couple of years covering just a few hundred miles in his tenure.

Finished in the original colour combination of Signal Red with red-piped Magnolia leather upholstery and a black hood, it covered most of its mileage prior to 2010, since when the MOT history confirms the car travelling just a few hundred miles each summer.Currently, it has just turned the 70,000-mile landmark and there are a few service and general maintenance bills present in the rather thin history file plus the original owner's handbook. Offered with a current MOT it is said to drive well and is excitingly offered at no reserve.

1962 Jaguar Mk2 3.4 M/OD

The car has a minor clutch issue, vendor has agreed to have it repaired immediately following sale at his expense

  • Fitted with Coombs-style arches, louvred bonnet, painted wires and S/S exhaust

  • Original reg number. Comprehensive history file, Heritage Certificate, numerous invoices, photographs of the rebuild and spare keys

  • One of the nicest Mk2s we have seen for a long time

  • Your earliest inspection is encouraged and welcomed

The 2.4 saloon of 1955 had been a major step for Jaguar, marking as it did the change from a coachbuilt chassis to one of unitary construction; it was a necessary move, however, Jaguar being aware there was a strong market for a more compact saloon than the big Mk IX. Powered by a 2,482cc version of the superb twin-cam straight-six XK engine first seen in the XK120, the 2.4 offered luxury, performance and value for money. Using coil spring/wishbone front and semi-elliptic spring rear suspension, it possessed fine road manners and proved a great success, both on and off the track, particularly when the Mk1, as it subsequently became known, became available with the 3.4-litre engine in February 1957.

It was in October 1959 that the Mk 2 version appeared, making a good car even better. Similar in appearance but with a much larger glass area, it boasted a wider rear track to improve roadholding together with minor front suspension changes to reduce body roll and all-round disc rather than drum brakes. Engine options included the 120bhp 2.4-litre, the 210bhp 3.4-litre and, for the first time the 220bhp 3,781cc unit of the Mk IX.

Having enjoyed considerable success as a racing driver, most notably in Formula 1, John Coombs retired from racing to concentrate on running his Guildford-based Jaguar dealership. He race-prepared cars for himself and other drivers gaining particular success with Jaguar Mk 2 saloons, engineering considerably faster and more reliable cars than the standard examples.

Pleasingly still sporting its original registration number, and looking absolutely delightful, ‘1856 RH’ is finished in Opalescent Blue with French Blue Hide and sits on black-painted painted wire wheels with 3-eared spinners. It's a matching-numbers, manual box with overdrive car and has just benefitted from a total ground-up restoration to the very highest of standards. It's been professionally presented to reflect the influence that John Coombs had on the Mk 2 market back in the day and upgraded during the process to enhance the driving experience wherever possible. Coombs-style rear arches have been employed in conjunction with a louvred bonnet (note the correct amount of louvres stamped) to aesthetically lift the car, whilst mechanically the detailed engine bay, complete with a Coombs of Guildford plaque secreted away, houses electronic ignition, a high torque starter, sports manifold and a Coombs-style, Bell Stainless Steel Exhaust. The underside of the vehicle is also gleaming and fully detailed, set off by a Harvey Bailey Handling Kit and Poly-bushed suspension.

Internally the Reuter reclining seats have been fully retrimmed in leather together with the door cards, new carpets and replacement headlining, as well as newly veneered woodwork and a period-style wood-rimmed steering wheel for a sportier feel.

Accompanied by a comprehensive history file, its Heritage Certificate, numerous invoices, photographs of the rebuild and spare keys, this stunning Mk 2 is a testament to the craftsmen that have given this particular Jaguar a new lease of life. Now ready to be enjoyed once again, out on the open road and chatting to fellow enthusiasts about that special Coombs Jaguar look. I don't think for one minute that John Coombs, whilst popping a few louvres into the bonnet of his Mk2 to keep it a bit cooler, would have imagined that 60 years later, enthusiasts are talking about his creation in hushed tones.

1963 Lotus Elan 'Bourne Bodied' S1

Lot # 339 (Sale Order: 40 of 132)

  • One of the first 200 Elans produced and an original right-hand drive car

  • Matching numbers authenticated by Lotus Club GB

  • Chassis up restoration in 2010/2011

  • Complete with original Works hardtop, hood and hood frame

  • A superb example of one of the very first Lotus Elan S1s

  • Your earliest inspection is encouraged and welcomed

In the early 1960s, before any production Elans were built, Colin Chapman decided to outsource bodyshell production to Bourne Plastics in Netherfield Nottingham. The mainstay of their business at that time was the production of fibreglass boat hulls, but in 1962 they won a £100,000 contract to supply GRP bodies for the new Lotus Elan sports car. This was seen as a breakthrough for the company and, remarked the Nottingham Evening Post, “represented the city’s re-entry into the car industry”. Special tools and moulding equipment were installed at the Netherfield factory to achieve the five-part body-forming process and over the next two years, Bourne’s went on to make approximately two hundred bodies before demand became too great and production was transferred in-house to Lotus Cars in 1964.

Totally restored from the chassis up in 2010/ 2011, this particular S1 was actually exported to the East Coast of America in 1972 /73 before returning to the UK in need of some attention. This early Elan has now been bought back to life with a conscious nod to originality, forming part of a small Lotus collection ever since. Its condition is superb throughout and a testament to its fastidious owner. Attention to detail is paramount with vehicles of this type and this particular Elan is no exception with the underside and running gear almost as clean and as tidy as the top of this delightful Lotus and, as you might hope, the 'S Bourne & Co (Plastics) Ltd.' plaque remains in place on the bulkhead and the engine bay, boot and underside still wear their faithful grey Gelcoat, exactly as it would have left Netherfield prior to final assembly.

A much sought-after 60s sports car that was produced with minimum weight in mind whilst still providing room for a 6’ tall driver together with practical luggage carrying capacity, the Elan was instantly popular. Around 900 of the early Series 1 cars were produced with many being converted to race specification, and a few lost in the mists of time making this Bourne-bodied example a very rare thing indeed.

Complete with a comprehensive history file, including the buff logbook, invoices from its time over the pond and later paperwork, MOTs etc.

You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. Please contact us on 01926 691 141 to secure your appointment or charles@silverstoneauctions.com to discuss the car in more detail. 1987 BMW E30 M3 FIA Tarmac Rally Car*

  • Finished 2nd overall in March 2020 in Rally Mallorca and is now turnkey and ready to compete

In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s the owner of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale, had several E30 M3’s built and prepared for racing by the UK Works BMW team, Prodrive, who were also responsible for the BMW Works representation in the World Rally Championship. This meant he had a unique insight in to the workings and the key people behind the scene of both the building and running of the original E30 M3 Works rally cars. This created a life long desire to one day switch from racing to rallying and then build and compete in a Works spec M3 on tarmac events and find out what legendary ex-Works BMW rally drivers ~ like Mark Duez and Patrick Snijers ~ had experienced back in the day.

So in Jan 2014 an original road going M3, without a sunroof or air-conditioning, was found and sent away to the West Country to be turned in to a Group A rally car. However, it soon became apparent it was neither strong enough or reliable enough, so 2 seasons later it was sent away again, this time to renown rally preparation experts, Mellors Elliot, who are the UK Proton Factory rally team, to be stripped and professionally prepared from a bare shell and turned in to an ultimate spec BMW M3 Group A Works replica to FIA 1990 specification. This included taking detailed advice from the Prodrive rally team manager back in the day, Paul Howarth, on how to make the car stronger and more reliable . On completion the car was handed over to Dansport of Chesterfield for testing and development who are very well known for building and running some of the world’s greatest period rally cars, several of which are owned by rally legend and entrepreneur, Steve Perez. The car then went on to compete in Ireland on some high profile tarmac events, including Killarney, as well as competing on the Manx International Historic Rally as well as numerous UK based events as part of the MSV/Motorsport News tarmac single venue series.Additionally, the car has regularly competed in Mallorca on both Rally Sol de Ponent and Rally Mallorca taking outright wins twice on the Rally Mallorca Legends event. Infact it was lying 2nd overall on Rally Mallorca Legends to an ex-Works Metro 6R4, this year in March 2020, when the rally was halted after 2 days due to the Covid 19 outbreak.

It has been built and run on a no expense spared basis utilising the very best FIA legal Group A parts throughout. The professionally built 2,300cc engine has only done 2 events since being refreshed and will come with a current rolling road BHP print out, the Samsonas 6 speed manual gearbox is an FIA approved recent purchase (running homologated ratios ), the drive train (including the development of stronger prop shaft joints and a trick limited slip diff) have all been developed, strengthened and improved over the last 5 years, including the successful fitment of power assisted steering. The car is offered with an accident free competition history.

The suspension features the ultimate Group A homologated Reiger dampers all round on Eibach springs with helpers, and all the usual competition spec radiator, pedal box, steering rack and upgraded GroupA components have been added where appropriate. The car features high tech instrumentation whereby the individual dashboard instruments glow red if they are out of pre-set parameters and the car has in date high spec seats and belts as well as a bespoke fuel tank and fuel system in the boot which is designed to allow for a full size spare wheel/quick jack and tools to be carried on board. It has current FIA HTP papers

For decades, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been something of an automotive yardstick for technology. These luxury saloons have always represented the very best of the German marque's forward-thinking design with many world firsts debuting on an S-Class. In its homeland, this model is referred to as the "Sonderklasse," or Special-Class in English and the W126 generation was very special indeed.

Only the second generation of the car to officially carry the S-Class nameplate, the W126 succeeded the very popular W116. Launched in 1979 after six years in development, this was to be the car that would take Mercedes-Benz into the next decade and serve as the flagship for the three-pointed-star. Designers wanted the W126 to be the best in the world in the areas of safety, technology, and efficiency and they managed that for over a decade.

In 1984, the most expensive top of the W126 range was the 500 SEL, a veritable palace on wheels. It combined the super smooth, 5.0-litre V8 and the long wheelbase of the SE range, meaning it competed directly with the Rolls-Royce Spirit of the day - both in terms of price and size.

Offered here is an extremely well preserved 500 SEL presented with beautiful Nautical Blue paintwork and Beige/Cream MB-Tex velour seating. Delivered new on 8th August 1984 by Mercedes main agent Swinford Motors – Stourbridge, West Midlands with just three owners in total, the first believed to be a diplomat, the second a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast and our vendor who is a private collector. Accompanied by a history file containing its complete original Mercedes-Benz book-pack, maintenance booklet stamped up to 25,573 miles, Owner Manuals, a Mercedes-Benz Owners Club card and even an original Antenna wipe. Indicating just 33,333 miles at the time of cataloguing, it's clear to see that this particular 500 SEL has been well looked after over the years and offers many more years of luxurious service, today with a twist of retro-cool.

1970 Maserati Ghibli SS

Lot # 342 (Sale Order: 43 of 132)

You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between the 16th and 30th July. Please contact Arwel Richards on 07434 960868 arwel@silverstoneauctions.com to secure your appointment or to discuss the car in more detail.

The health and safety of both our customers and team remains the utmost priority, we are therefore operating to strict COVID-19 guidelines and full instructions for arrival and inspection protocols will be given when making your appointment.

• Manufactured in 1970 as one of just 12 right-hand drive examples of the Ghibli SS • Supplied new to the dry climate of Australia the car was first registered in the UK in 1990• Between 2000 and 2005 it formed part of Maserati UK’s Heritage Collection • The history file includes invoices for significant sums over the decades by Bill McGrath• Copy build sheets and letters from Maserati together with handbooks are also included• Showing an odometer reading of 61,500 (atoc) the car presents beautifully with a mellowed interior.• Far rarer than its contemporary rivals this car offers classic Italian styling and serious performance.

Maserati's Ghibli debuted in coupé form at the Turin Motor Show in November 1966. Styled at Carrozzeria Ghia by Giorgetto Giugiaro and named after a Sahara Desert wind, the Ghibli rivalled the Ferrari Daytona for straight-line performance with a top speed approaching 170mph. Dry-sump lubrication enabled the engine to be mounted deep in the chassis, permitting a low bonnet line, while limited suspension travel ensured that the tyres did not foul the wheel arches. The roofline fell away from the top of the steeply raked windscreen to the chopped-off tail, Giugiaro thus achieving a cabin lower than that of almost all the Ghibli's contemporaries. The car was serious competition for Ferrari’s Daytona and Lamborghini’s Espada.

The Ghibli used a shortened version of the Quattroporte saloon's tubular steel chassis in its live rear axle form. In preference to the more complex suspension designs favoured by its rivals, the Ghibli used leaf springs and a single locating arm. The power unit was Maserati's powerful, four-cam, 90-degree V8, derived from the 450S sports racer and first seen in road-going guise in the 5000GT. This was used in 4.7-litre form up to 1970 when it was superseded by the 4.9 litre SS version in order to meet ever more stringent emission laws. Its performance was stunning, with 100mph arriving in under 16 seconds. This neck-snapping acceleration resulted from the V8's enormous torque, which made the Ghibli one of the most flexible and easy-to-drive GTs of its era. One of the most stunning sports cars ever made, the Ghibli represents exceptional value for money today against its main rival, the Ferrari Daytona, just as it did 40 years ago.

This historically important example is finished in Rosso with a light tan leather interior and is the rarest of them all, being the SS model. Documents within the extensive history file inform us it was first delivered to Alec Mildren PTY Ltd. in Pymble, New South Wales Australia in September 1970. Ordered in Verde Gamm, a typically 1970s lime green metallic, with Bianca (white) interior. The car resided in the sunny climate of New South Wales until it was shipped to the UK in 1990. MOT'd in that same year, it was first registered in the UK in June 1991. From late 1994 through to May 1995, Windmill Classics carried out a body restoration at a cost of about £9,500 which included the replacement of both sills and footwell panels. The rubbers were replaced on refitting and the car was fully serviced before being returned to its owner.

In 1996, the car was sent to marque specialists Bill McGrath Ltd. for a strip and rebuild of the engine at a cost of £10,300 and a full mechanical and detail refreshment at a further cost of £3,699. McGrath continued to maintain the car, with further invoices detailing work carried out to the suspension, brakes and steering in 2000 at a cost of some £6,500. By late 2000, the Ghibli was sold to Maserati UK for their Heritage Collection and during their ownership through to 2005, circa £10,000 was spent internally at the Maranello Egham workshops. In 2004, the engine was removed once again and returned to McGrath for a complete strip and rebuild at a cost of £18,000 whilst additional sums of £9,000 and £4,200 were spent on further restoring and perfecting the car, including t

1972 Jaguar E-Type FHC Series 3

Lot # 345 (Sale Order: 46 of 132)

  • Lovely Series 3 V12 2+2 presenting beautifully in Primrose Yellow over black leather

  • Just under 69,000 miles indicated and has covered only 500 miles since 2006

  • Restored over a seven-year period at a cost in excess of £100,000

  • UK-supplied, right-hand drive car described by our vendor as matching engine, chassis and manual gearbox

  • Large detailed history folders including a photographic record of the restoration

A decade after the original Jaguar E-Type arrived, the design progressively matured through 1971 with the introduction of the Series 3. Designed to showcase the new smooth and torquey 5.3-litre engine, originally developed for Le Mans, the Series 3 cars were available as a 'Roadster' (convertible) or a '2+2' Coupé. The Series 3 is easily identifiable by its large cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tyres, a larger bonnet bulge, updated bumpers, four exhaust tips, and a badge on the rear that proclaims it to be a V12. It also featured uprated brakes, power steering as standard and a large horizontal scoop added to the underside of the bonnet to assist with cooling. The interior was entirely new in the V12, with more comfortable seating, stylish new door panels and a smaller, dished and leather-rimmed steering wheel. Being slightly larger and altogether much softer in nature, the E-Type in Series 3 form had lost the wildness of its youth but gained the long-legged touring profile, to which it was arguably better suited.

The lovely example on offer here is an original UK-supplied, right-hand drive car, factory specified with the desirable manual gearbox and finished in Primrose Yellow with a black leather interior, arguably, one of the best-suited colour combinations for the Plus 2 silhouette. The previous owner purchased the Jaguar in 2012 and, whilst overall it appeared in good condition, some areas of the underbody were suffering from corrosion. Consideration was given to attempting localised repairs but, eventually, the decision was made to commission a total nut and bolt restoration of engine, body, interior and axle. The previous owner was fastidious in keeping track of all his expenditure and, accompanying the car, is a ledger detailing all payments made during his tenure totalling over One Hundred Thousand Pounds. He also recorded the various stages of restoration photographically. Also supplied with the car are a large number of invoices and MOTs dating back to 1985, and other partial history dating back to the 1990s, and viewing of the various document folders is highly recommended.

Now offered from a significant private collection, this fabulous E-Type has just been issued a fresh MOT, has had a recent inspection, is in superb condition, on the button and absolutely ready to enjoy.

1974 BMW 3.0 CSA (E9)

Lot # 346 (Sale Order: 47 of 132)

  • Launched in 1968, the E9 Coupe was one of the most handsome cars ever made by BMW, sleek and elegant with an airy cabin, slim windscreen pillars and a large glass area

  • Utilising the 3.0-litre, M30 6-cylinder, the twin carburettor CS produced a useful 180bhp

  • Nicely finished and expensive when new - the 3.0 CSA cost more in the UK than an Aston Martin DBS

  • Only 355 were produced in 1974 with total CSA production worldwide numbering a paltry 3,667

  • UK-delivered in right-hand drive, this automatic CS is superbly finished in Ceylon Metallic with a lovely original interior

  • Originally used as a showroom centre-piece, driven minimally and latterly stored, the car was recently fully recommissioned

  • Just two previous keepers, 15,600 miles, lots of history, its full original book-pack and old registration book

In 2015 our vendor was on the look-out for a low mileage, matching-numbers BMW 3.0 CS. After much searching, he came across ‘UPL 610M’, first ordered and owned by a Mr George Allen, of Portadown County Armagh, in Northern Ireland back in 1973. Mr Allen was a prominent local businessman and owner of a car dealership in Northern Ireland, called ‘Allens Autos’ (a garage sticker is still on the car) and for many years, the car was on display in their main showroom before George took up personal ownership. Given the access George Allen had to other cars, it was rarely used and by the early 1990s still had less than 16,000 miles on the clock.

In November 1991, Kevin McGarrity (a Belfast-born Formula 3 racer) took ownership of the car and, right up until 2014, he kept it tucked away in a discrete lock-up garage in Londonderry. Kevin had fully intended to restore the BMW, however, by 2014 with it left unattended in the lock-up, the car was beginning to look very tired, and had deteriorated to the point where Kevin felt it was beyond his abilities. Consequently, the car was advertised on Car & Classic, where it was spotted by our vendor. After several lengthy conversations, a deal was struck, and five weeks later the car was shipped over from Belfast and delivered to the workshop of specialist classic restorers ‘AV Classics’ in Bedfordshire for a complete external restoration.

AV Classics set about logging the extent of the work that was required along with the necessary parts. The entire interior had survived very well and it was decided to leave that intact, however, the bodywork was a different story. Although the structural integrity of the car was very good, some of the exterior panels were poor and were replaced with genuine OEM parts. The AV Classics bare-metal paint process is an exacting 14-coat procedure, using PPG paint products and 3M preparation materials. During the initial manufacturing process at BMW, as new metal is let in, it's protected by a localised application of copper spray. During the restoration, prior to commencing the respray, the copper spray protection is removed, and the shell is given a full coat of etch primer and epoxy primer which is baked for 30 minutes at 60 degrees. A thin skim of filler is applied to any areas that require final shaping and panels are filled and correctly gapped.

The epoxy primer was further hand-shaped and sanded back with 80 grit and finally finished in 180 grit. This 3.0 CSA was now ready for the paint shop. The paint shop prepared the body with 3 to 4 coats of high build primer before being baked for 40 minutes at 65 degrees. After baking, the material is allowed to settle so that any sinking can take place. The primer coat is flatted and shaped by hand with 120 grit and finished in 180 grit. The shell was then re-primed with a further 3 coats of high build primer, baked again and allowed to dry before being hand blocked and flatted again with 240 grit followed by 320 grit. It was finally finished by DA sanding with 500 grit. The prepped BMW shell was now seam-sealed and was ready for the final colour application of the base coat. This BMW “Ceylon Metallic 008” (original to the car) period colour was applied in three layers followed by three coats of clear coat. The car was then low baked for 30 minutes and then left to air dry for a few days. Once all the material was cured the car was then polished. Finally, the paint was flatted and polished with progressively finer grades of papers starting with 6,000 grit ending on 12,000 grit and machine polished to create a perfect glass-like finish.

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Sport Coupe

Lot # 347 (Sale Order: 48 of 132)

  • Standard factory Sport with Fuchs alloys, front and rear spoilers, electric pack, sport seats and a sunroof

  • Classically presented in Guards Red (G1G1) with a contrasting black leather interior

  • Fitted with the more user-friendly G50 Getrag gearbox

  • Extensive service history with 29 stamps. Less than 200 miles since the last entry at 66,414

  • With its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, original service and handbooks, MOTs back to 1997

  • Your earliest inspection is encouraged and welcomed

The 3.2 Carrera is revered as the ultimate development of the original 911 that first appeared in 1963. These final cars (before being replaced by the more complicated 964) were the most flexible and usable of Butzi Porsche's original design. Launched in 1984, and reviving the ‘Carrera' name for the first time since 1977, these were the ultimate 1980's sports cars.

The all-alloy flat-6 engine, which had been fuel injected since 1971, received a final stretch to 3,164cc, producing a torque-rich 231 bhp - enough to propel the lithe and slippery coupé to over 150 mph, with 0-60 mph coming up in 5.6 seconds. Cars built from September 1986 onwards were fitted with the more user-friendly G50 Getrag gearbox, but all 3.2 Carreras feature galvanized bodies, which together with Porsche's legendary build quality, ensure that these classics are long-lasting.

This JCT 600 Newcastle-supplied Carrera Sport is presented in the most recognisable of Porsche colours – Guards Red ( G1G1 ) with a contrasting black leather interior and is a standard factory 'Sport' model with Fuchs alloy wheels, front and rear spoilers, electric pack, sports seats and a sunroof.

Having been with its present owner for in excess of twenty-two years, very reluctantly the time has come for this 80s sports ‘classic’ to move on to pastures new. The condition throughout is a true credit to the owner who is a Porsche Club GB member, which is reflected in the extensive service history in the accompanying dealer service records. Twenty-nine stamps in total, ten from Porsche main dealers and the remainder by marque specialists, and less than two hundred miles since the last entry at 66,414 miles. The accompanying history file includes a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the original handbooks, and a host of MOT Certificates dating back to 1997, highlighting its light use in recent years. It should also be noted that recent 'works' include new tyres, calipers, replacement brake pipes and partial stainless steel exhaust,

This is simply a lovely and genuine example of one of the most popular and sought-after Porsche models that has very clearly been loved and cherished. With Carrera 3.2 values starting to gain momentum once again, this is an opportunity that warrants your very serious consideration.

1973 Porsche 911 (3.0) RS Recreation

Lot # 348 (Sale Order: 49 of 132)

  • Originally supplied by Malaya Garage, Billinghurst, West Sussex

  • Powered by a 3.0-litre SC engine with triple Webers rebuilt by specialist Bob Watson

  • Previous competition history and RIAC competition log book

  • Superbly presented in Viper Green with the correct 1973 2.7 RS graphics and black interior

  • Complete with Porsche Certificate of Authentication

  • Inspection of this superbly prepared car and its paperwork is highly recommended

Purchased by our client in 2016, this particular RS re-creation had been built some years previously and used extensively for road rallies etc, however, attention was required and so an in-depth rebuild commenced in March 2018. The vehicle was stripped to a bare shell then shot blasted to ensure that there would be no issues remaining once the build was complete. Utilising all new or fully refurbished panels and parts as required, the re-creation was completed to the very highest of standards and fully detailed throughout. Mechanically, the 3.0-litre engine, which had previously been ‘breathed on’ by well known Porsche mechanic Bob Watson of Bob Watson Engineering, received a full check over and was deemed fit for purpose, the gearbox, however, was found to be in need of attention and was completely rebuilt. Externally the Porsche was refinished in the desirable and instantly recognisable shade of Viper Green and fitted with the correct decals for that nod to originality, while internally a full retrim was commissioned. The project was completed in 2019 and has received little use since.

Accompanied by a detailed schedule of the rebuild (£57,611), rebuild photographs, original handbooks, Malaya Garage Maintenance book, Malaya Garage invoices, and its RIAC Competition Log Book, this RS re-creation comes to market freshly serviced and with a recently issued MOT Certificate ( no advisories) that expires 07/7/2021

This fabulous 911 is based on an original 1973 right-hand drive 2.4E, a valuable car in its own right, and with ‘original’ 2.7 RS Porsches now effectively unobtainable, this superb and highly desirable recreation is offered at a fraction of the cost of the real deal but will provide as much, if not more, enjoyment for its next custodian.

1991 BMW 325i Sport (E30)

Lot # 349 (Sale Order: 50 of 132)

  • The revered E30 325 with the legendary M20 SOHC 6-cylinder engine

  • First registered in May 1991. One of the last Sport models ever produced

  • UK-supplied and with low ownership, this car has covered under 57,000 miles

  • With its last keeper for 26 years before being passed to his nephew

  • Presenting really well, in Sterling Silver with a classic black interior

  • Lightly refreshed recently, Inspection 2 Service and a fresh MOT

  • With E30 M3 prices now out of reach to most, these fabulous driver's cars are a real alternative

The BMW 325i was a massively important car for BMW - and it remains an enduring success today. The E30 generation cemented BMW as the market leader in the medium-sized saloon sector, and although it looked little different from its predecessor, thanks to understated styling by Claus Luthe, it was far more convincingly engineered and far better to drive. The upper models in the range, with their straight-six power, rear-wheel drive and perfectly judged steering, were the ones to have.

The 320i and - even more so - the 323i/325i were a real driver's delight and the E12′s propensity to oversteer when it wanted to, had been tamed considerably in the E30. The manual 325i Sport was the best of the lot and with that wailing engine, controllable rear-biased handling, and all-round quality this was ‘the' sports saloon to beat.

This 2.5-litre 325 Sport is superbly understated in Sterling Silver with a classic black interior and has patently been cherished by its long term owner. He must have loved his little silver 'Beemer' as he kept it for 26 years before handing it over to his nephew, and whilst his nephew would have loved to keep it, circumstances prevailed and our vendor acquired the car within the last year. Minimally refreshed where needed, it has recently undergone its Inspection 2 Service and MOT and comes to the sale ready to join a collection or to be a daily driver for those in the know.
