The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I

Lot # 35

Very good condition softcover. This book provides the most comprehensive examination of American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) combat doctrine and methods ever published. It...more shows how AEF combat units actually fought on the Western Front in World War I. It describes how four AEF divisions (the 1st, 2nd, 26th, and 77th) planned and conducted their battles and how they adapted their doctrine, tactics, and other operational methods during the war. General John Pershing and other AEF leaders promulgated an inadequate prewar doctrine, with only minor modification, as the official doctrine of the AEF. Many early American attacks suffered from these unrealistic ideas that retained too much faith in the infantry rifleman on the modern battlefield. However, many AEF divisions adjusted their doctrine and operational methods as they fought, preparing more comprehensive attack plans, employing flexible infantry formations, and maximizing firepower to seize limited objectives.

To Fly and Fight: Memoirs of a Triple Ace

Lot # 36

Very good condition, hardcover with dust jacket. "The Californian's enduring love of flying began in the 1920s with the planes that flew over his father's farm. In Januar...morey 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. Later after he received his wings and flew P-39s, he was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the new 357th Fighter Group. Equipped with the new and deadly P-51 Mustang, the group shot down five enemy aircraft for each one it lost while escorting bombers to targets deep inside Germany. But the price was high. Half of its pilots were killed or imprisoned, including some of Bud's closest friends."

Fighting for MacArthur: The Navy and Marine Corps' Desperate Defense of the Philippines

Lot # 37

Very good condition. "Fighting for MacArthur is the only book that focuses on the role of the Navy and Marine Corps during the 1941-42 defense of the Philippines. The boo...morek includes the most detailed account ever published of the Japanese bombing of the Cavite Navy Yard outside Manila on 10 December 1941, the worst destruction ever to US Navy installation. The book also provides many new details about the 4th Marine Regiment that surrendered on Corregidor in May 1942, the only time the Marine Corps lost a regiment in combat. Fighting for MacArthur includes important insights on the origins of the difficult relationship between Army General Douglas MacArthur and the Navy and also compares MacArthur’s actions in the defense of the Philippines to those of Admiral Thomas Hart, the Commander of the Asiatic Fleet."
