Gass was a sergeant on the expedition and as such was one of the persons charged by Jefferson with keeping a diary of events. Because of the delay in the publication of the official account, Gass’s journal became the first to appear, and as such was eagerly taken up by readers starved for information about Lewis and Clarke. Front cover detached but present, library withdrawn, the front marbled end pages are chipped, text generally very good. Chronicles of Border Warfare or a History of the Settlement by Whites. Clarksburg, VA, Joseph Israel,1831, the rare first edition, 319pp plus one advertisement leaf, lacks the 4 page table of contents. Hardbound in full leather that is soiled and worn, lacks the front end pages and there is ink writing on the back blank page with the name of the owner "John Black Stone... residing in Greene County, Monongahela...Pennsylvania." The first signature of 40 pages is loosening and appears to be held together with 1 thread, many pages have heavy foxing and stains. Field #1690 states- "Of this scarce book, very few copies are complete or in good condition. Having been issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed principally for a local circulation, almost every copy was read by a country fire-side until scarcely legible. Most of the copies lack the table of contents. The author took great pains to be authentic, and his chronicles are considered by Western antiquarians, to form the best collection of frontier life and Indian warfare, that has been printed"....more
