American "Bailey's Midget Piano" with Eleven Dancing Dolls 1600/2100

The wooden piano with ebony finish and elephant-shaped cast iron legs is surmounted by a display cabinet with mirrored back that contains eleven m...moreiniature porcelain-head dolls. When the keys are played, a mechanism connects with the dolls which dance about. The piano is labeled "Gem" in gilt lettering. Excellent condition, mechanism functions well. The dancing dolls piano was patented on June 21, 1881, marketed as "Bailey's Midget Piano"; it was made in several sizes, this appearing to be the most deluxe of the models. It is very rare to find.

Comments: Schmitt et Fils, circa 1878, their earliest period bebe, and with BTE marking indicating the model was registered with the French courts. Value Points: very rare early Schmitt bebe with beautiful expression, fine original state of preservation, and with original store boutique label from the prestigious Paris toy store of Au Magasin des Enfants.
