French Musical Automaton "Pageboy with Violin" by Vichy 4000/5000

Lot # 252 (Sale Order: 253 of 303)      

13" (33 cm.) Seated upon a velvet-covered wooden box is a bisque-head doll with brown glass paperweight inset eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, metal hands, wearing original very frail silk jester costume including cap, and holding a well-crafted wooden violin in his hands. When wound, he turns his head from side-to-side, and plays the violin by moving the bow over the strings in very realistic separate movements of his elbow and wrist, while music plays. Condition: music and mechanism function well, bisque excellent, costume is original albeit very worn. Comments: Vichy, circa 1880. Value Points: the beautiful quality of the music box, and the violin craftsmanship denote the luxury production of the piece....more

French Musical Automaton "Bunny in the Cauliflower" by Descamps 1200/1800

8" (20 cm.) A white-fur-covered papier-mache bunny is hiding inside a papier-mache container in the shape of a cauliflower with colorful fabric leaves and cotton cauliflower florets forming a lid. The bunny has amber glass eyes, hinged ears and mouth, and when the automaton is wound, he slowly arises from his hidey-place in the cauliflower, pushing the lid open, twirls about as though checking for danger, while his ears and mouth twitch, and music plays. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Descamps, circa 1920. Value Points: an unusual variation of the bunny in the cabbage theme, with amusing action....more

French Musical Automaton "Flower Seller with Surprise" by Leopold Lambert 6000/8000

Lot # 264 (Sale Order: 265 of 303)      

24" (61 cm.) Standing upon a velvet-covered wooden stage is a bisque-head doll with blue glass eyes, mohair lashes, open mouth, row of teeth, blonde mohair wig in upswept fashion, carton torso with adult female shape and long slender legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing silk and lace country-style costume of flower seller. She appears to be carrying a large tray of silk flowers; the tray is actually supported by a metal rod to her torso which connects the mechanism. When wound, the lady turns her head side-to-side and then nods as she lifts her right hand to offer a nosegay of flowers; she lowers the nosegay and turns her attention to a leaf-covered cone on her tray, and then presents the surprise: lifting the cone, a little dancing and twirling bisque doll is revealed. Music plays throughout. Condition: generally excellent, music and mechanism function well. Marks: L.B. (key) 1159 Germany Simon & Halbig S&H 6 (head) (illegible original tune label on the front).
