Solid domed paper-mache shoulder head with strong elongated throat, black painted hair close to head with looped wave in front of sculpted ears, black enamel inset eyes, painted facial features, closed mouth, old muslin stitch-jointed body, leather arms. Condition: very good, original finish with some fading of features, some craquelure at back of hair. Comments: Germany, circa 1840, an early model with strong and appealing personality, the doll wears wonderful original costume of wools and cotton, great shoes with thick leather soles. American Cloth Folk Doll with Oil-Painted Features, Along with Early Teddy Bear 1200/1600

Lot # 267 (Sale Order: 264 of 345)      

27" (69 cm.) The all-cloth doll has flat-dimensional padded face and hair with side seams, oil-painted rosy complexion, brown short boyish hair, brown upper glancing eyes with outlined eye whites, brows, outlined nose, outlined lips, stitch-jointing at shoulders of short arms, and knees. Condition: very good, hands worn. Comments: American, late 1800s, the painter of the doll charmingly used the doll's torso to wipe her paint brush, perhaps assuming that the doll would always be dressed. Value Points: appealing folk art painting of facial features, wearing blue chambray overalls, sweater, knit sweater, leather boots, and having papa's red boxing gloves, and holding his own very worn early teddy bear with vintage photograph of a young boy and his own miniature boxing gloves....more

The underside of the horse is inscribed "Made by the S.A. Smith Mfg Co, Brattleboro, Vt". Circa 1900, the S.A. Smith firm specialized in wooden toys at that time.
