Two American Oil-Painted Cottage Cloth Dolls 800/1100

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 345)      

16" (41 cm.) and 20". Each is all cloth with unusual block-shaped heads with one head seam encircling the sides and crown, with painted facial features and hair, each having painted black hair, and well-defined facial features including eyes, entire nose (of nearly identical shape), and lips. The larger doll has stitch jointing at hips and shoulders. Condition: very good, original finish with some craquelure and darkening. Comments: American, late 19th century, from small cottage industry whose maker is unknown, the very similar painting of the facial features, especially the nose, and similar block shape of the head suggests the same maker of both. Value Points: artfully-painted features, the eye shading especially rich and deep, great antique costumes....more

All-black cotton fabric with un-jointed very plump head, torso and legs, having center seam on face and torso, jointed arms with large separately-stitched fingers, stuffed with excelsior and cloth, with hand painted facial features including pronounced eye whites, brows, nostrils, lips with two rows of tiny teeth, defined ears, and with individually sewn-on wool loops as hair, wearing antique red woolen middy covered with badges and pins including George Pardee, Republican, the 21st governor of California from 1903-1907. All-cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features and hair, deeply-defined eye sockets with incised eyeliner, brown painted eyes, brown painted hair with stippling onto forehead and matching brown brows, accented nostrils, stitched ears, closed mouth with very full lips, stockinette stitch-jointed body, oil-painted lower arms and legs, antique costume appears original. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: known as the "Philadelphia Baby", the distinctive doll was commissioned for the J.B. Sheppard Department Store of Philadelphia toward the end of the 19th century; the quality of artistry and workmanship is superb and distinctive, yet the actual maker remains unknown. Value Points: rarely found American doll with superb sculpting details and fine original painted finish. Ex-collection Evelyn Ackerman from which it was acquired for the Blackler Collection....more

All-cloth homespun doll with stitched-on shoulder head with flat-dimensional face and rounded back of head having center back seam, oil-painted hair and face, large blue painted blue eyes with pronounced white eye dots, outlined brows, eye sockets, nostrils and even the philtrum, defined nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, shaded blonde short curly hair with painted blue hair band and bow, cloth body with stitch jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, oil-painted lower arms with stitch-defined fingers and separate thumbs, antique dress, undergarments, stockings and leather shoes. Condition: generally excellent, some typical rubs on face. Comments: American, circa 1890. A curious pencil inscription on the left leg reads "Origina [sic] "Raggdy [sic] Ann Culpitts NB family" suggesting the doll was given that designation by a later owner of the doll. The doll owns three little vintage dolls and animals. Value Points: the naive painting is harmoniously enhanced by fine sense of artistry on this wonderful early portrait painting in doll form and intriguing family notations....more
