Grand-Sized German Paper-Mache Doll with Sculpted Hair and Rare Glass Eyes 800/1100

50" (127 cm.) overall. 12"h. head. Paper-mache shoulder head with sculpted short blonde curls waved away from her face and held by a hair band, inset blue glass eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with accented lips, handmade cloth body with stitch jointing and added composition hands, antique costume. Condition: very good, original finish with some fading, body is not factory original. Comments: Germany, circa 1875. Value Points: exceptionally large model with rare glass eyes.
American Lithographed Cloth Doll "Little Red Riding Hood" 200/400

17" (43 cm.) Lithographed cloth cut-out and stuffed doll depicts Little Red Riding Hood with golden curls, red-hooded cape, carrying basket of goodies and flowers. Marks: Arnold Print Works Patented July 5, 1892, October 4, 1892. Excellent condition. American, Arnold Print Works of North Adams, Massachusetts, 1892, from their premiere series of cloth bolt-printed dolls.

Paper-mache shoulder head with very plump face, blue glass inset eyes, painted eyeliner, lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with outlined lips, blonde mohair wig, muslin stitch-jointed body with leather arms, sewn-on stockings and leather boots. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Washable heads 6000/Z (and anchor symbol, paper label on shoulder plate). Comments: circa 1875. Value Points: beautifully-preserved paper-mache lady with original lustrous complexion, original body and silk costume, original maker's label.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Germany, possibly Schilling, circa 1875. Value Points: having fine original finish, original body, and wearing original costume (some moth wear) and undergarments.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Greiner's Improved Patent Heads, Pat. March 30th, '58 (original paper label). Comments: Ludwig Greiner, circa 1858, the early period patent model by the prestige American dollmaker. Value Points: fine original finish on the early model, fine antique costume.

Condition: very good. Marks: Patented Sept 7, 1915. Comments: Raggedy Ann by Volland, circa 1920, unusual to find hand-painted features. Value Points: rare early model of the beloved storybook doll in especially nice condition for this doll.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Raggedy Ann by Volland, circa 1930, the last of the Volland models. Value Points: wonderful expression on the well-preserved early and sought-after model.

Each is all cloth with stitch jointing at shoulders and hips (Andy with added jointing at elbows and hips), printed faces with four lashes, shoe button eyes, Andy with red yarn hair and printed tongue, Ann with outlined nose and brown yarn hair, each with red and white striped stockings and black sewn-on shoes. Condition: good, however well loved. Comments: Volland, early 1920s. Value Points: the pair wear their original costumes (Andy lacking bow-tie) and Ann with original cardboard heart.

Light brown mohair teddy bear with rounded head, pronounced snout and side-stitched ears has black embroidered nose and mouth, amber glass eyes, jointing at shoulders and hips, felt paw pads. Good condition, some mohair sparseness. American, circa 1930, the teddy wears charming antique romper suit and centennial medallion, 1897, of the City of Baltimore.

Good condition. Circa 1920, rare color, the teddy wears cotton plaid shirt with collar, spectacles, elaborate brass medallions.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: American, late 19th century, the doll bears old museum inventory number. Value Points: wonderfully-preserved cloth doll, likely of unknown cottage industry, has artistic painting of complexion, features and hair.

Value Points: very rare doll in this size, with original painted finish.
Very Rare American Cloth Topsy-Turvy by Witherspoon Rag of New Orleans 800/1200

16" (41 cm.) The classic topsy-turvy doll depicts a brown-complexioned doll on one side, and a white-complexioned doll on the other, each with artistically oil-painted features, and applied hair, the white-complexioned girl with unusual brown-painted eyes and brows and black mohair curls, with common torso. The small New Orleans cottage industry, under the direction of Maud Witherspoon, sold its dolls in important stores throughout the United States for a short period of time at the beginning of the 1900s. Value Points: dolls by this firm are very rare; the topsy-turvy models are virtually unknown.

Dark brown cotton sateen doll with flat-dimensional face having varnished finish with oil-painted features, large outlined amber-brown eyes in half moon shape with white eye dots and very thick black eyeliner, thick black brows, defined nose, painted lips with coral-shaded lower lip, black wiry hair, stitch jointing at shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, mitten-shaped hands, coral sewn-on stockings, painted brown shoes, original antique costume including turban, and gold bangle earrings. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: New Orleans Rag Doll by Maud Witherspoon, circa 1900, a note pinned inside the back skirt hem reads, "Maudy from New Orleans 80 yrs old". Value Points: very fine original condition and artistic painting of the rare doll.

12" (30 cm.) and 14". Each is of brown cotton cloth with stitch-jointed arms and legs in simple-cut style, the larger with hand-painted features, and the smaller with flat-dimensional stitched-on face with printed facial features, each with antique costume that is likely original. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: the smaller is Babyland Rag, circa 1910; the larger may be early hand-painted Babyland Rag, circa 1890. Value Points: well-preserved pair of rare models, the hand-painted doll with exceptional detail of exuberant lashes, and double row of defined teeth between delightedly-smiling lips.

Most Endearing American Black Cloth "Make-Do" Folk Doll 400/600

20" (51 cm.) The rag-stuffed black stockinette head has inset brown glass eyes with embroidered brows, stitch-shaped nose with thread-dotted nostrils, red stitched lips, grey fleecy wool stitched wig, old very worn composition-jointed body with black cloth stockinette cover. Condition: very good. Comments: American, late 19th century, the "make-do" doll perfectly encapsulates the folk art concept, cleverly utilizing the relic pieces of an antique commercial doll (namely, eyes and body), along with found pieces of fabric for body cover and costume, yarn for hair. Value Points: wonderfully-entreating expression, the untrained folk artist in her simple attempts at facial definition and considered use of found materials, has created an utterly charming piece, with old cotton costume elements and antique pin "I want a home".
