A Wonderfully Preserved "Alabama Baby" by Ella Smith 800/1200

24" (61 cm.) All cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features, brown painted short curly hair with golden highlights, painted blue eyes, richly painted lashes, upturned nose, closed mouth, plump blushed cheeks, stitched rounded seam at top of head, stitch-applied ears, stitch-jointed shoulders and hips, stitch-defined fingers with separate thumbs, bare feet with defined toes, wearing antique white baby gown with lace trim, undergarments. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (illegible Smith stamp). Comments: Ella Smith's Alabama Baby, circa 1912, the doll, named "Lucky" by its present owner, Jacque Shafer; her purchase of the doll at a 1981 Theriault auction led to an acquaintance with the daughter of Ella Smith and subsequent publication of her book, "Ella Smith and Alabama Babies Scrapbook", a copy of which is included with this doll.
Bisque Bebe in Original Box and Costume for the French Market of Au Nain Bleu 1700/2500

12" (30 cm.) Bisque socket head, blue glass sleep eyes, painted lower lashes, brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, outlined lips, four porcelain teeth, pierced ears, brunette human hair, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: SH 1039 4 dep (head) Au Nain Bleu E. Chauviere Blvd des Capucines 27 Paris (paper label on body and on original wooden box). Comments: circa 1900, the doll was commissioned for the luxury Paris doll shop, and presented in original silk costume created in the Au Nain Bleu couturier workshops. Value Points: unplayed with condition, the doll has original wig, body, body finish, rose silk satin dress with lace, matching bonnet, undergarments, leather shoes with rosettes, with an additional original knit dress and beret, and original labeled box.
French Bisque Bebe, Size 0, in Superb Presentation Box with Elaborate Trousseau 2500/3500

10" (25 cm.) doll. 16" x 12" trunk. A wooden-framed presentation box with decorative paper wraps and engraving, hinges open to reveal well-fitted interior, comprising bisque doll with brown glass sleep eyes, painted facial features, open mouth, four teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, French composition and wooden fully-jointed body, and contents. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Dep 0. Comments: circa 1895, for the French market, the doll and trousseau were likely prepared for a luxury boutique Etrennes gift. Value Points: in unplayed with condition, the superb presentation includes six luxurious silk or woolen ensembles, each with dress or coat and bonnet (one being an unusual Pierrette costume and including a bisque-headed miniature marotte); a hidden lower level presents six undergarments, a porcelain wash set, and two glass-topped boxes with 12 miniature accessories including perfume, soap, brushes, fingerless gloves, and more.

Bisque shoulder head, sculpted short blonde curly hair with center forehead curl, sculpted ears, cobalt blue glass enamel eyes, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with center accent line, blushed cheeks, muslin stitch-jointed body, bisque hands. Condition: generally excellent, left thumb broken. Comments: Germany, circa 1885. Value Points: wonderfully sculpted hair and rare glass eyes, original body and antique gentleman's costume.

Of pinewood with original robin's egg blue painted finish, the 7-piece ensemble comprises mirrored armoire, table, two chairs with fancy spindled back and legs and blue tufted silk upholstery, bed with silk upholstery, dressing table with white marble top, and night stand with white marble top. Excellent condition. French, circa 1885, a rare petite size .

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 3 (head, and artist red checkmarks) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1880. Value Points: rare petite size with transitional poupee/bebe face has sweet expression, original wig, pate, very sturdy signed body, original chemise and Jumeau earrings.

Bisque swivel head on kid-edged bisque torso, brown glass sleep eyes, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, open mouth, accented lips, porcelain teeth, auburn mohair wig, peg-jointed bisque arms and legs, painted above-the-knee black ribbed stockings and five-strap brown heeled shoes. Condition: generally excellent, few paint rubs on shoes. Marks: 886 S 3 H. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1890. Value Points: fine large all-bisque has antique dress, undergarments, straw bonnet and muff.

Solid domed bisque head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, lushly painted lashes and brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, open mouth, accented lips, two rows of porcelain teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig , carton torso containing clockwork mechanism, kid covered hinged upper legs, composition arms and lower legs, typical Steiner painted finger nails. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: Le Petit Parisien Bebe Steiner Medaille d'Or Paris 1889 (torso) Au Nain Bleu E. Chauviere Boul des Capucines 27 Paris (paper label on torso). Comments: Bebe Gigoteur, by Jules Steiner, created under commission for the luxury Parisian doll store of Au Nain Bleu. Value Points: in pristine unplayed with condition, the doll wears her original muslin chemise, pantalets, shoes and blue stockings, and is preserved with her original trunk labeled "Au Nain Bleu", along with original blue silk dress and matching bonnet, two white dresses, cashmere woolen cape coat, silk coat, night shift, blue silk parasol, and blue beaded necklace.
Large Special Order American Cloth "Alabama Baby" with Original Wig and Painted Hair 800/1200

30" (76 cm.) All cloth doll with side-seamed head, pressed and oil painted facial features, brown painted eyes with lushly painted lashes and eye liner, thick painted brows, closed mouth with bow-shaped lips, molded ears, painted curly brown baby hair under long brunette human hair wig, cloth body with stitch-jointing at shoulders, hips and knees, bare feet, antique baby gown with hand embroidery at yoke and cuffs. Condition: very good, original painted finish with some craquelure. Comments: Ella Smith's Alabama Baby, circa 1919, the doll with alternate painted/wigged hair was shown in her catalog of that year. Value Points: rare large size with original paint, appealing expression, original wig; the 30" size was not listed in the catalog and was available by special order only.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: No. 2 (and slightly legible stamp on torso). Comments: Ella Smith's Alabama Baby, circa 1910. Value Points: the doll, in wonderful original condition, wearing original "fancy dress" costume as shown in 1912 catalog, and along with a vintage photograph showing original owner proudly holding her doll.

All cloth doll with rich brown complexion, pressed and oil painted facial features and hair, molded ears, stitch-jointing at shoulders and hips, painted finger nails, bare feet with painted nails, wearing calico print dress and bandana, shawl, apron, undergarments. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Ella Smith's "Alabama Baby", as presented in her 1919 catalog, described as "Negro Mammy Doll" although the same model in variation of costume was also sold as boy child; the doll was offered in six standard sizes from 12"-26", this being size #3 selling originally for $6.10 direct from the doll studio. Value Points: rare doll in wonderful original painted finish, rare larger size.

All cloth doll with pressed and oil-painted facial features, side-head seams, sculpted ears partially covered by painted hair in simple bobbed style, large brown eyes, lushly painted lashes and brows, upturned nose, closed mouth, stitch-jointing at shoulders and hips, bare feet, wearing checkered romper suit. Condition: very good, original finish well preserved with some typical craquelure. Marks: (partial Smith stamp). Comments: Ella Smith, circa 1920, one of the final models issued by the company. Value Points: very endearing expression on the impish toddler child, original finish.
