The reply to Wappenstein's letter comes from a San Francisco detective who correctly identifies the slain man as Walter Lane, who often went by the alias "Fagan," a name that can be seen written in pencil on Wappenstein's original letter. The reply is also dated in September of 1907 and describes Walter Lane's felonious past, including committing grand larceny in the city of Los Angeles - a crime he was still wanted for.
Both letters are in good condition with normal fold marks and both measure 8.5" x 11".
