Vintage Ghirardelli's Trolley Sign - Ground Chocolate - San Francisco

Lot # 127 (Sale Order: 126 of 334)

This is an early cardboard trolley sign that was used to line the sides of a trolley as a way to advertise a particular product - in this instance, Ghirardelli's Ground Chocolate. These signs were made of cardboard because that made the signs easier to slide into a curved track to be displayed. As well, these signs were changed quite often, so the cardboard allowed that to be an easier task. When trolleys were eventually replaced by buses, they kept the same concept, only the bus signs were larger (11" x 28"). There is some wear/damage to the right side of the sing - none that distracts from the overall sign itself. Measures 11" x 21."

Zipper Skill Trade Stimulator Gumball Machine

Lot # 146 (Sale Order: 145 of 334)

This is a game of both skill and chance. You get five balls to shoot for each game; they bounce off the pegs and can knock the other balls out sometimes making this as much chance as skill. This was a trade stimulator and if you lined up the balls correctly they would award you either cash or merchandise. There are two different paper award cards in the lower frame that gave you the different payouts. Also on the lower left is a wood block with a knob on it. For each coin you put into the machine you could pull the knob and get a gumball. Another feature is that on back there is a small window where whatever type of coin you put into the machine could be seen, this way they knew what to pay you or could see if you used a slug. The machine just reads Deposit Coin in Slot and would take a penny to a quarter and you were paid according to your coin. The machine was made in Chicago by Binks Industries and is 17 1/2 x 12 x 9. This is all original and works great!
